Hitter or Pitcher

Hi guys,

New to this forum and this game -- being a baseball geek, I'm shocked that I hadn't played this game previously. Never too late, I suppose...

Anyway, in my game, I have the following player on my draft radar. He's listed as an outfielder, and looks to have the tools to be a reasonably decent player. But when looking at his ratings, his pitching numbers look good as well.

So...if you had a player like this in your organization drafted right out of college, would you keep him as an OF or switch him to a pitcher to see what you've got? His STU/MOV/CON aren't off the charts, but they're decent and his array of pitches are promising. Plus he has decent velocity and stamina so he might grow up into a mid-level SP or better?

Thanks in advance for any thoughts on the matter!

I guess I would go with what my team needed more, OF or pitching. Looking at his ratings, he really is not that good defensively in the OF (not that he couldn't get better), so I would probably give him a look at a SP and if he didn't cut it, try him in the OF and see if he can make it there.

Put him on the mound. 95-97 with 3 plus pitches is tough to come by.

If it doesn't work out, you'll have the fall back option of putting him in the outfield or at first base.

I'd convert to pitcher. All things consider he projects better there in my opinion. If he doesn't pan out you can always convert him back.

First of all, welcome to the forum. Second of all, I personally feel he should be a more productive player on the mound, but should you choose to put him in the outfield, he'll probably reach the bigs quicker. But like I said if you're looking long term he looks better as a pitching prospect.

Thx everyone...I'll draft and convert. I'll update his progress later...

As a side question, a different SP in this draft has awesome potential stats but has an injury rating of fragile. High school pitcher, so no injury history listed.

Would you take him off your draft boards? He commands a sizable signing bonus as you'd expect. Also, do injury ratings ever change in the opposite direction? I know someone can go from fragile to wrecked or durable to iron man, but if they have a number of injury free seasons, can they ever revert back from fragile to normal? Or are they forever doomed...?

I considered making a new thread for this question but I'm new here and didn't want to join and then come out firing with a bunch of new threads. Thanks!

I have never seen a players injury rating improve. Fragile doesn't mean they will get injured all the time, just more likely. I would not take him off your list, but I'd would certainly take a different player if they ranked similarly.

A fragile player is much more likely to get injured. Injuries can cause talent hits so he's less likely to develop in my experience. However, if he is far and above the best player available I would still take the chance. I hope that make sense.

+1, I've never seen a fragile guy improve. As he gets injured more and more his status may turn to 'wrecked.' Now, I have seen 'normal' guys turn fragile if they get injured often. But most of the time, the only injury rating changes are from 'fragile' to 'wrecked' or from 'durable' to 'iron man'.

To answer your question, cub fan, I wouldn't take him off your board completely; if he slides far enough he might be worth the risk. But if you're drafting early, I'd pass.

definitely a pitcher, imo. i always take the best of the two... except in extreme cases or when it's fairly even, obviously.

that guy looks like a nothing too special homerun guy with a middling other offensive talents. as a pitcher even if his third pitch doesn't develop he looks to be a strong back-end reliever.

if a releiver pitches 60-70 innings, they are facing nearly as many batters as a regular positional player gets PAs in a year. something to think about when valueing RP. if they are getting 80-100 i wouldn't be suprised in BF is > PA of a regular. in a non-dh you have to consider the lack of offense in that equation, too.
