Is this in the Game?
Max Scherzer - Nationals, All-Star, and arguably the best Pitcher in the National League lately, just made the record books.
Last night he gave up 3 consecutive home runs on the first 3 batters he faced in the game. This has only happened on a few occasions in Baseball History. Has anyone ever seen this "In the Game"? |

I've never seen it in the game, but it does remind me of an Effectively Wild (the Fangraphs (nee Baseball Prospectus) podcast) episode where they tried to guess how many home runs a pitcher would have to surrender leading off the game to be pulled. I think they settled on 5 or 6, which seemed low to me when I first listened to the episode, but maybe is closer to the answer than I gave them credit for.

As unbelievable as it sounds, I just had that happen earlier this week. Opening day, Corey Kluber on the mound, gave up 3 home runs to the first three batters on the first 6 pitches. He ended up getting charged with 8 ER in 3 2/3, walking 6 and hitting 4 batters. To me, this isn't surprising. Seems in OOTP18, my opening day starter always gets shelled.
