The Ghost of Steve Jennings
My league is haunted.
I first noticed something awry when I saw that I was still paying relief pitcher Steve Jennings about $200K/year even though I had traded him a couple years ago. (and no, I didn't retain his salary and he doesn't show up with the "(R)" after the salary) He's currently playing for the Reds and shows up also on their salary screen for the same salary. So. I thought I'd better get rid of him. I went to commissioner mode, cloned him then deleted the original, thinking that he would then disappear from my salary screen. I put the cloned Steve Jennings back on the Reds, but I still have the original deleted Steve Jennings on my salary screen - his ghost is haunting my accounting office. He shows up as a free agent now when I click on him from the salary screen, but he doesn't actually appear in the free agent list. So, at least I'm not paying him any more. I guess the ghosts of deleted players no longer need money in the afterlife. That got me wondering, so I browsed through the salary screens of all the teams in my league and well over half of the teams have ghost players on the salary screens - some of them have been haunting the accounting offices for awhile. Toronto has the worst infestation, with three 100+ year-old ghosts among others. These old retired ghosts don't draw any salary, but I'm worried that there are more active players like Steve Jennings who are taking salaries from teams that they no longer play for. But I haven't had the patience to start cross checking all of the players in the league. The issue only shows up on the Salary screen - these players don't seem to be duplicated anywhere else. Other than possibly sapping salary from teams, there doesn't seem to be any other ill effects. I'm not even sure that they actually do sap salary. Even though their salaries are listed on the salary screen, I didn't add up the numbers to see if Steve Jenning's listed salary was actually included in the total or not before I created the ghost Steve Jennings. But I am a little bit concerned since I've been working this fictional league since 1871 and it's now 1999. I'd hate to lose it to a corrupt database or something. Anybody else seeing anything like this or have any suggestions about how to fix it? |

I suppose from the lack of response that no one else seems to be having this problem. I guess then that this isn't a bug, but that I managed to get my game mildly corrupted somehow.
As an update: The ghost of Steve Jennings has been exorcised! He's now disappeared from my accounting office - but in his place is Ezequiel Castillo. He's an 18-year-old active player currently in Tampa's international complex. I'm thinking that when I deleted the original Steve Jennings, his player ID became available and was eventually assigned to Castillo. Either that, or it's a case of demonic possession and the ghost of Steve Jennings has now possessed Ezequiel. Unfortunately for Castillo, this doesn't seem to be helping his baseball skills... |

This could make for an interesting dynasty report...

I haven't seen this before, but I have only admittedly been able to complete 5 seasons before I start over again. I have, however, seen numerous players duplicated in the free agency pool. Quite often, one version has up to date states while the other shows the prior year stats.

Perhaps a good movie. The ghost players are actually soulless vampires that have been paid by their vampire bretheren, the owners. Cobby plays the accountant that discovers these secret payments.
But you can't spin a bug/db problem into a dynasty report.

Ha! I like it. Especially with me playing the heroic accountant fighting the undead. |
