NCAA Playoffs - lost it's purpose

Started with the Bowl games -- and teams and conferences got to set matchups for Bowl Championships -- Writers and Coaches picked a National Championship ...

Then the BCS -- used computer rankings and polls to attempted to identify the top 2 teams and have them match up in a Bowl game for the National Championship . That did not always match what some opinion shapers wanted . The BCS attempted to say " that an early season loss was as meaningful as a loss at the end of the season ". And with adjustments attempted to include non power 5 conference teams.

Now the Bowl and Playoff system --- No chance for a non power 5 conference team because of strength of schedule -- The Power Conferences are not going to give up the money from the Playoffs and the non-Power 5 conferences can only win the games that they can schedule ..

SO how can the system be fixed ---- #1 is for everyone to stop listening to the talking heads telling you which teams LOOK the best ( if you win , you win) ..... #2 If you can not win your Conference you should not play for the National Championship ..... #3 a loss is a loss no matter week 1 or 13 ....

Polls should be taken out of the equation. If people want to use an opinion poll to seed teams, fine. But not to decide who plays for the trophy. Those spots should be earned w/a clear pathway outlined for how eveyone can have a chance to claim them.

  • Create eight sixteen-team conferences by geographical region (or regionally and by "power"), divided into four divisions.
  • Have every team play 10 games (3 non-conference, 4 in-conference/non-division [rotated each year], and 3 in-conference/in-division)
  • The division winners are then seeded by record (tie-breakers are determined by conference wins, then division wins, then points scored). This creates a 32 team playoff, thus making the national champion need to win five post-season games in order to be crowned.
  • If 32 teams are too many, make each conference have two divisions of eight teams so the number of division winners equals 16.

Or something like this.

The PURPOSE of the Playoffs was to get the four best teams to play for the National Title ........ BUT we now have two loss teams (that don't even play for a Power Conference title) getting into the "Playoff" over teams that are undefeated . They play their schedule and attempt to schedule other programs but can not get them on the schedule .

You can not force Conference makeups - and you can not force teams to give up home games (** Why would Texas, Nebraska, Ohio State, Alabama, UCLA, USC, Oklahoma give up a home game to play at a "small " school stadium ? In fact they pay millions for small schools to play them . )
----- Unless the NCAA schedules non-conference games . ( ** You would likely see the Power 5 Conferences bolt for their own Division . ** )
----- But the NCAA could have each conference schedule 8 games (conferences could appeal to schedule 9 games ) and then balance strength of schedule with 3 or 4 remaining games (no scheduling FCS schools ) . >>> in 2018 you would be setting schedules for 2020 of two years in advance.

------ But small schools will not approve because they want the pay day to play ... Power 5 would not because the loss of home game money and too much risk to prestige.
