Salary Cap vs. Cap Hit
Apparently I haven't figured this part out. How do you have a higher salary but a smaller cap hit?

The salary isn't necessarily the same in each year of a contract; the cap hit is the average salary over the life of the contract. So if the contract is e.g. front-loaded with $2.5 million in the first year, 2 in the second, and 1.5 in the third, in the first year the player's salary will be $2.5 million, but the cap hit will only be 2 (6 million/3).
