Stuff vs Movement

Can some one tell me the difference between the 2? I want to know what pitchers to target in the market.

High Stuff will equate to more Strikeouts and high movement will equate to fewer Home Runs. Both will impact other aspects of a pitcher's effectiveness together along with Contact but those are the two big impacts you will care about.

Stuff is also generally the last thing to develop with young pitchers

Instead of contact you mean control right? I assume that affects walks.

It's all in the manual
Quote:
All players have a set of three basic batting ratings: Stuff, Movement, and Control. Each of these has a matching potential rating.

Stuff
Stuff is a measure of the quality of a pitcher's pitch repertoire. Think of it as essentially how a pitcher "puts it all together." Stuff directly affects the number of strikeouts a pitcher throws.

Movement
Movement is a measure of the movement on a pitcher's pitches. It is harder for batters to make good contact with pitches that have good movement. As a result, pitchers with high Movement ratings tend to give up fewer home runs.

Control
Control is a measure of a pitcher's accuracy. Pitchers with good Control ratings tend to walk fewer batters.

Stuff is a measure of the ability to throw the ball and have the batter miss it. It's affected by things like velocity and pitch ratings, but it's often considered on its own. Thus, high stuff often correlates with high quality pitches or velocity.

Movement is a measure of the ability to keep the ball in the park (avoid HR). It's affected by things like type of pitch, GB ratio, and quality of pitches, but its' often considered on its own. Thus, high velocity often correlates with high-quality sinkers and similar pitches.

Which is more important depends on your team focus, defense ability, and stadium. In one league I am in, I have a park susceptible to home runs. Thus, I like to have very high movement values for all my pitchers. Because these pitcher are also groundballers or extreme groundballers, I also focus on infielders with high defensive ratings. Then I can actually ignore the stuff ratings to a large extent. I have a few strong-stuff pitchers, but they tend to do just as well in ERA (though not FIP) as my high-stuff pitchers. In other words, the low-stuff pitchers don't get a lot of strikeouts, but because they have high movement and induce a ton of groundballs, my terrific infield defense saves the day and turns the batted balls into outs, and I don't give up many homeruns.

Hmm are you sure? My experience is the opposite. Stuff is usually first to develop followed by movement then control which occasionally develops earlier than movement. Stuff is rarely last.
