Cut before player option year?

Got a reliever that has just been terrible this year, its August and he’s really broken down on me. Next year is a player option for 7 mil. If I cut him right now, what happens to his player option? Does it come off my books, or am I committed to that for next season if he decides to exercise it, even if I cut him? How would that work.

You will be charged for it as it is his option and not yours.

That’s what I sort of figured, doesn’t seem right I can just cut him and the player option goes away.

It is a Player-Option, so there is no buyout.

If it was a Team-Option, I believe you would be responsible for the remaining year + the buyout.
