Catcher Defense (Bob Boone vs Yogi Berra)
I'm at gold level right now (demoted from diamond!) and am working a strategy to build my team around defense and good pitchers with elite control. I've chosen for elite defense at every position on the diamond except 1B, and so far, Catcher.
My current catchers are the NYM Live reward Piazza and the all cards Yogi Berra. Based on my current strategy, I'm considering moving Piazza to reserve, making Yogi my backup catcher, and using the Gold-rated Bob Boone as my starting catcher. It doesn't make a lot of sense to optimize for defense everywhere else except catcher. Two questions: 1. Am I insane for wanting to do this? 2. Would it be considered "tanking" to "cut" a diamond card and bench a perfect card in favor of a gold card? |

no, I'm in Diamond on one of my teams that has been using Boone for several seasons (I sold Yogi) with Yasmani Grandal as the backup

Makes sense if trying to prioritize Def at Catcher position - not many high OVR options that can hit and play defense at an elite level.

Boone isn't a great bat, but we all knew that going in--he never was IRL.
I still play him over all of the live SE catchers, even Yogi in some cases. In a different ballpark, different results  |

Wanted to give you all an update:
I went with Bob Boone. Moved Piazza to reserve. Halfway through the season, Boone's CERA was a half-run better than Perfect Yogi's. I *sold* perfect Yogi and added a 91-rated Tony Pena as well as the last two 1980s pitchers I needed to finish that mission and get the SE Rickey Henderson. We won the gold level championship, Bob Boone's 3.08 CERA was the best in the league BY ALMOST A FULL RUN, and Henderson single-handedly won Game 5 by going 4-for-6 with FIVE STEALS. In the end, Scott Rolen hit a B9 walkoff homer to clinch the championship in 6. I'd say it worked out okay. Thanks for the advice! |
