Can't start game after purchase

Hello everybody!

I purchased the game on Steam because it was on sale. It installed, wanted to start it and I got this error message: "Unable to open or create the application data folder '$USERDATA'! Please reinstall Out of the Park Baseball"

Obviously, I did that, deinstalled and reinstalled but it didn't help. All other games purchased through Steam, including OOTP 20 work just fine.

Anybody can help me?

Hi,

Sorry you're having trouble and sorry for the slow response, I missed this when you originally posted.

This can happen if you have a non-ascii character in your username on your system. The game doesn't always like that. Do you have a umlaut of something like that in your username on your system?

Alternately, this can also happen if there are write permission issues on the folders the game is installing to.

To make sure permissions issues aren't the problem, make sure to run both OOTP and Steam in admin mode.

To do that we need to right click on the ootp21.exe icon. You'll find the icon by going to your steam library and right clicking the game then going to 'Properties' > 'Local Files' > 'Browse Local Files'. That will open the folder ootp is installed to and you'll see the ootp21.exe icon there. Right click that and then go to 'properties' > 'compatibility' you can select the option to 'run this program as administrator' on that screen and then every time you start the game it will automatically run in admin mode.

You'll also want to do the same thing for the Steam.exe program file itself as well. The steam.exe file one you can find most likely in C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam.

If that doesn't fix things and/or you do have a non-ascii character in your username, then let me know and we'll go from there.

One more question, are you able to open the game at all, even just to get to the initial start screen, or does the game not even get that far?

Hello, thank you for replying.

Gonna answer your last question first, not able to open the game at all, I just get the error message and that is it.

Did the "run as admin" thing, did not help.

I have an é in my username.

But I wonder why I have the issue with 21, but 20 worked just fine? Was 21 programmed differently?
