Dodgers-Rays World Series

I don't have a dog in this fight, but I have a good friend who is a Dodgers fan, so I will probably be leaning that way.

I am looking forward to the series. I have enjoyed watching the two LCSs, and like the players on both teams. Hoping for a good series to watch as a mostly neutral fan.

Thanks to my participation in other threads here, I have two dogs in the fight.

Dog #1: Vindication for the Dodgers who may have gotten the besmudged end of the stick a few years ago.

Dog #2: Attraction for the Rays whose scrappy style of play beat my favorite team and with whose first baseman, Choi Ji-man (崔志萬 - thank you, CB), I have fallen in love. Cheerfully digging out throws and stretching to the maximum to save his teammates from their errors!

This is the World Series that I wanted (once a certain ALDS was decided) so I am happy. I am going to enjoy this World Series more than I have many in the recent past.

I try to avoid irrational reactions in real life, but the occasional snit in sports is fun! I don't take grudge holding to the extremes that my dad did. He hated Dean Smith for decades because he took more N Carolina players than IU player to the 1976 Olympics.

I will happily admit that if there is a bad call against my team early in the game, it justifies every call in my teams favor for the rest of the game! "Yeah, that may have been a foul, but remember that travelling call they screwed up 90 minutes ago? Its only justice!"

I also know that the refs always hate my team. If I drive 6 hours in any direction, stop at the first Little League game I find and start rooting for the blue team, the umpires IMMEDIATELY start screwing over my team!

There is a reason that, when my kids were growing up, I would tell them that "just because I am yelling, doesn't mean I am right" when they would watch sports with me.

The Rays are a lot more palatable than an asteroid strike, and it turned out even the Red Sox were too a couple of years ago. I've found wanting LA to lose is not enough fun for me to offset my irritation when they win though, much less during the Comic Sans Season.

Really couldn't have asked for a better match-up. The 2 best teams in baseball this year. No dog in this fight so I'll be cheering for great plays and gutsy performances. GO BASEBALL!!!

Not really, not from a sitting on my butt and watching TV perspective. I can recognize that my reactions are irrational, wallow in them and no one is affected. If I root against the Astros, chuckle when they lose, no one is harmed by it.

If I let my irrational reactions affect how I treat people, let it affect decisions I make, then THAT is real life and I do my best to be self-aware and proactive against those reactions in that venue.

By that definition, war (the killing kind, not the baseball statistic kind) isn't real life either.

You could sit on your couch, root against, say, the Ukrainians, chuckle when they lose and no one would be harmed by your sitting or chuckling.

That being said, a #5 seed vs. a #7 seed World Series with a combined winning percentage in the regular season of .512 would at least have killed any talk of the extended playoffs persisting real fast.

Never mind that neither team's got a bullpen - it will be a slugfest series for the record books! "Now move over, folks, there's nothing to see here", Leslie Nielsen's character said as fireworks kept exploding behind him.

Why?

Everyone knows that with an expanded playoffs there's a chance of lower seeds advancing.

I cannot believe Bellinger dislocated his shoulder after his homer in a "powerful forearm bash" with Hernandez. Look for MLB "guidance" on overly exuberant celebrations in order to protect investment value.

In your instance, you are right, they wouldn't be harmed or helped by my opinion, but I would certainly feel different about my own attitude. This has wandered afield from Sports, but I would be glad to continue this discussion via PM.

I would not

Point being, the impact, or lack threrof, of your feelings is not what defines the real world.

Sports are the real world.

Don't think so. Read some of the posts about how thrilled people are when losers beat the big guys.

I waited for some dumb crap like that for a long time.

Because I root for black and orange laundry, I will certainly be rooting against the white and blue laundry.

But I could really care less about this season. I’ll be happy for either fans who’s laundry they root for wins.
