Never seen anything like it...
OK so it worked - they won 1-0, but still - bullpen full of relievers as well.
You had to be TOUGH to be a pitcher in 1906...

Question is why a bullpen full of relievers? Lots of team back then on had 5,6,7 pitchers on entire staff. And they didn't exactly throw like they do now. Most players were kinda on smallish size too. I've read stories that balls were so bad they couldn't be hit hard. I have a book in my possession I wish I could share with people about how the game was played back then. I was somewhat shocked on some of the stuff done. I'll try to find it and post the name of book. One of the craziest things was owners would hire rifle marksmen to try and shoot possible run scored flyballs out of the air. But to be serious about what you posted I'm more shocked the game let a pitcher stay in so long with out using position players. LOL. Thanks for the boxscore. I was a first for me. BB |

Thanks for the post.
Some observations I found interesting: He only K'd a batter once every two innings, and yet only allowed 9 hits in 20 innings. Must have had some tremendous fielders behind him. Or the rifle marksmen were really on THEIR game this day. LOL I would say, based on this, that his BABIP against is due for a correction. But he's a 19-game winner at this point so what do I know. Obviously a pitch to contact sort of guy. As for the 236 pitches, they might have to give him his full three days rest before his next start. Maybe that was the thinking behind saving the BP (rest of the staff). |

OK, so here are the full box and log for the game.
BOX SCORE GAME LOG 4 CS helped a bit. But the breakdown was: 10 K 23 flyouts 26 groundouts So yeah those outfielders and / or sharpshooters were busy boys. Just re the bullpen composition - this - the Footnote League - is a hybrid league, started in 1901 and is now in 1906 but featuring players from all eras. So I can't really adhere to the exact conventions of the day and have 4-man rotation / 6 relievers as setting.

Somewhat unsurprisingly, he went down with a DtD elbow injury later in the month...

Yes, time for an eye test. Read the bracket as a '1' I guess.
