Annual Roster Updates

I have been playing OOTP for nearly 20 years, always used fantasy because I knew all the players and had preconceived notions that clouded my judgement. One of my missions with FHM is to learn the players that I know next to nothing about, so I want to carry a league of real players over the years.

Not having experienced the rolling over of real players, how does that work year to year if I want to keep the players where they are at yet have the real draft class available for the following years? I don't want the new roster update to move guys from the teams they are on within my game, or change their ratings, but I do want the new guys. Frankly, those are guys that are probably already within the game on one of the younger teams.

I am willing for this league to progress year by year and have an additional fantasy league without the real teams. Actually, would like to do a full draft of a created universe for this purpose. Give me a chance to compete with the Kraken, maybe.

Another way of putting it is how do I run a real NHL league year after year without turning it into a fantasy league progressing from the first year.

I've read this a couple times and I'm still not sure exactly with 100% accuracy of what you want.

If you're wanting to play Historical, you can do most of this I think - have players keep them on their teams and have them auto-assigned to the correct teams. Or if you want to draft them and let the chips fall where they may, you can do that too. You don't have to have fantasy players or teams to do so.

You could also play it one year at a time as well if you prefer, the choice is really yours.

Thanks Adam, I was afraid I didn't do a good job explaining.

I am not really wanting to do historical in the sense that I pick a team from 1985 and play forward. I want to take the Kraken with their opening day team and play forward. I am not making a lot of transactions because I am trying to learn the team and tangentially the current players across the league.

That is not to say that I am not going to make transactions, pick up players, etc. as time goes on. I am also not saying that I just want their opening day team next year, I want any moves I make to hold as I go forward year to year.

You intrigued me with "have players keep them on their teams and have them auto-assigned to the correct teams". By that do you mean that if I trade Mark Giordano, for example, to Chicago, when the new rosters come out next year, I can import them and instead of remaining with Seattle he is in Chicago? I don't think you are but that is exactly what I would like to do. That and have the real draft class available for a draft in my particular league.

I do apologize for my struggles in getting my point across. This just isn't anything I have ever had to consider in OOTP, playing completely fantasy. Created players are all I have ever had. I appreciate your willingness to try to understand.

So the easiest thing in that sense then would be to start the game on July 1st and edit the league and turn trading off. You could turn off drafting as well and keep players on the teams that drafted them.

Roster updates provided by the FHM team does not affect your ongoing save. I think that's your main concern. There is no need to tinker with settings. The roster update will update the database for future games you would create only. As for draft classes, they have the real players to fill the first few years of the draft classes with real life younger players, but after a few years the pool will generate randomly created players.

ARG, I am honored to have you reply. I have watched some of your YouTubes and actually subscribed. I admit I haven't found the time to keep up on all of them but they helped my learning process as well.

I appreciate Adam B, too, I just don't have the name recognition I perhaps should have.

To the post, yeah, I have come to realize that at this point. I simply didn't understand the concept previously. All the deep leagues and junior teams should provide that supply for a few years into the future though.

I think ultimately, I am going to go with a full draft at some point and carry that career forward, so stay tuned for those questions when the time comes.

(Preview: Can I throw all the existing players into a brand new league-wide draft and go from there? If I start with a full league-wide draft, am I drafting my affiliate rosters as well? Should I limit the world list of leagues if I were to do something like that or do the players simply revert to leagues in their home country?)

Glad that you found the videos useful !

Are you asking if you can make a fantasy draft ? That's how I read your last question. It is possible to do one. You will have to create a custom league in order to get it going. I've only did one as a test the first day I got the game while live on stream, so I am not 100% sure what happens to the remaining players that are not drafted.
