Waive Player VS DFA Player VS Waive & DFA Player VS Release Player?

If I want to get rid of a player from my rosters (and I can't or don't want to demote them) it seems I would want to do one of these 4 things?

Under what circumstances would choose each option?

Waive Player
DFA Player
Waive & DFA Player
Release Player?

I'd try to trade him first.

If that doesn't work, then waive, because if someone picks him up they take the salary,

If he has a big salary and it's unlikely anyone will choose him off waivers then try to trade him while retaining some of his salary.

THIS must be a great idea. My consistent detractors didn't show up en masse to argue against it. They didn't show up HERE either.

DFA is a hold for ten days while you make a decision. I think if you waive without DFA then if the player clears waivers he becomes a free agent and you owe the salary, same as a release.

However if you waive and DFA, and he doesn't clear waivers (three days), then you have an additional seven days to decide what to do.

A player can be demoted to the minors after he clears waivers although if he has enough service time he can refuse. However players who refuse when first asked sometimes agree to a demotion after clearing waivers.

If a player clears waivers it means other GMs view his value as less than his salary. So to trade him you'll need to retain salary.
