OOTP Pre-Order Question

So I pre-ordered the FastSpring version of OOTP23. Did I make a mistake? I am a traditional Steam user for most of my games except for OOTP and I wonder if not having the Steam achievements/access to the workshop will matter all that much.

I would love some of y'all's thoughts on this.

I switched to Steam with v21.

Achievements mean nothing to me. They popup on the screen, for about 2 seconds I think "interesting", click them away, and never look at them again.

Workshop? Is the reason I now buy Steam. It's about how easy this makes modifying OOTP. Subscribe to a mod and workshop installs if for you. IMHO it's worth the 3 day wait to get the Steam version to get the easy moding capability.

Having said that most of those mods can be found in the mod forum for manual installation. Depending on computer skills some find doing this challenging, others, easy.

With FS it just comes down to getting OOTP 3 days early and how comfortable you are in manually installing mods vs. waiting and getting access to the Steam Workshop.

I go back and forth on whether to use Steam or buy directly. I guess I'm inconsistent, especially considering I buy all my other games on Steam.

I always buy direct.

I don't use a lot of mods and adding things to folders isn't difficult, so manual is fine for me.

I have no issue installing mods by hand, I just have a speck of buyer's remorse now.

Same. I feel like I screwed up a bit. I always buy direct and didn’t realize that Steam makes the mods easier since I’ve never used it. Maybe next year.

If you pre-ordered the game, you get access to the public beta which comes out Tuesday.

Not if you ordered it on Steam.

You can't preorder on Steam. You can only wish list it.
You then get the discount for the first week it is on sale on Steam.

I didn't say "pre" order. For technicalities sake, I used "order" instead of "wish list". Same idea basically.

No problem, just the way I read it.

Just wanted to confirm, does anybody know if the stats/cards acquired during the beta period will be wiped out prior to the official launch like last year? I assume so, I just wanted to check and make sure.

I'm 99.9% sure they will be wiped, yes.

Wish the Steam version had the early access, but I guess I'll wait a couple days to get the franchise started. The itch is bad though.

I don't think most people who order direct start their longterm saves until at minimum the full launch version comes out on Friday anyways.

Why not? I start mine right away. The save carries over once the full version is released. No time to waste!

I understand some like to wait for the rosters to be updated on the official release day. But they're usually pretty good and if there's a couple moves that aren't updated, it's easy enough to edit those. The rosters aren't bad enough for me to wait.

Because there are often some pretty significant bug fixes and updates in the live version after the beta. And in many cases the fix only applies to new saves. Waiting 3-4 days is worth having a better experience for the remaining 12 months.

Personally I use the beta to do a short Beta Save, GM-only for 2-3 years and play through it relatively quickly. Lets me try/test the new features, figure out which Trade/Evaluation settings I want, etc. Just as bad as having a save without the bug fixes from the Launch version would be a save where the trades made before Opening Day are with settings I later found out to be 'wrong' for me.
