Field of Dreams

Has anyone built the Field of Dreams field used last summer for the White Sox-Yankee game ?

Thanks

I'm not aware of any attempt. Silvam said in another thread that he thinks the cornfield would be difficult to model. I can imagine a couple of ways to do it, but I agree it'd be tough to have work out well. Based on a model I'm working on now for a fictional park with stacked hay bales as the outfield wall, putting in individual corn stalks would be a bit of a hassle but the real problem would be that the .obj file for the model would probably end up well over 100 Mb for a satisfying number of corn stalks (typically these files are less than 2 Mb, sometimes less than 1 Mb) and I'm not sure how well that would run. Alternately, one could try to do it with the right texture projected on a plane (or planes), but it might only look good from a very limited number of camera angles (and perhaps only with "follow ball" turned off).

If I find time I could try to experiment, but time for experimentation has been a rare commodity these days...

I did an attempt to make the original Field of Dreams a couple years ago that I never released (thread here: https://forums.ootpdevelopments.com/...t=Field+Dreams), but ran into the issue where the field was just too small, and the outfielders would be playing in the "walls" themselves. I did manage to make it work (I had a picture of cornstalks I used instead of actual cornstalk models), but that was the only issue I ran into from what I recall.

dishnet and asrivkin--

maybe the two of you could work together to get some Field of Dreams available.

it sounds like dishnet more or less has the template which looks good.

asrivkin is a pro working on places where the outfielders start a pitch beyond the fences since he did some historical parks where distances were actually shorter than regulation. asrivkin might now know the secret to minimum distances to have the outfielders in play. asrivkin also has made an out on the farm park before--check out his Finley Park at his Jazz Age thread. asrivkin's use of see-through chain link outfield fences at Finley Park possibly could be used to show the picture of the cornstocks beyond and that might resemble the wanted cornfield, but those see-through chain links do work for game play like balls off the fence or over the fence--I have played Finley dozens of times. i even have a game on YouTube featuring out on the farm Finley Park by asrivkin. See for yourself and imagine something similar with a cornfield at Field of Dreams:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aSiE...el=kcstengelsr

i think last year's Field of Dreams game had the fences 330-340 feet down the line and 380-400 feet in center (would have to look it up, but more or less the dimensions of fences in Comiskey circa 1970s or 1980s. they did not play the game with the outfield distances of the movie. i have to imagine that those distances used last year would be ample for outfielders in play. asrivkin would know. compared to dishnet's template it looks like it would require moving the fences back and moving the outfield light poles back beyond the moved fences.

there will be another Field of Dreams game this year on August 11 featuring the Cubs and Reds. The records will count.

Thank you for the kind words, KCStengelSr. I don't think there's a secret to making small parks work, it's just being willing to put up with fielders standing in the street or under the stands and emerging into the field of play.

Regardless, the site of the MLB game is plenty big to not have that problem by the looks of it-- NBC Chicago's website says "The ballpark is 335 feet down the left and right field lines and 400 feet to dead center, with alleys that are 380 feet.", and the Google Maps picture I attached shows both the movie site and the site they used for the real game. Since they're going to play there again this year, I suppose it may be worth making, just a matter of who's going to actually do it.

asrivkin and dishnet:

any progress on making the Dyersville, Iowa FoD park a reality? August 11 of this year will feature another MLB records count ballgame there.

OK, it's not in time for the real game, and it's not quite my usual thing, but I'm going to give this a shot. Hopefully I'll be able to post something before too long...

Update

OK, it's not quite ready for a beta release, but it's getting pretty close. At the very least it loads into OOTP all right!

Field of Dreams Draft

Hi all,

Here's the link to what should be a zip drive with a working version of the MLB Field of Dreams, including a .prk file and the Sketchup file that was used to generate the other files

Google Drive Link to MLB Field of Dreams

I never can seem to get the grid set up the way I like, so YMMV. The area outside the park itself isn't a lot like what it is in real life other than the tent and trailer, but I suspect most people aren't going to be looking in that direction. It's possible the background is better done with skyboxes than how I handled it, if someone wants to try to make that work it's fine with me. There were fewer pictures of the park than I was expecting, and I didn't go to the trouble of tracking down a broadcast to work from--there may be a second scoreboard in left field that's a twin of the one in right field, I couldn't tell. Also, I can't tell if the textures of the corn stalks are correct or weird--they look OK in Sketchup, and weird in the OOTP ballpark editor in a way that sometimes looks OK during the game. Also, I didn't include pictures for 2D play, though that's easy enough to do. Whether this is a final draft, a not-final draft or ready to go is perhaps TBD. Comments welcome here or via PM

Have fun!

asrivkin did a terrific job with Field of Dreams. I hope that it was his labor of love to gift us this special ballpark.

i decided to re-imagine the real 2022 FoD game between the Cubs and Reds. i placed both teams in 2022 FoD caps and jerseys by nopepper, set the game for FoD park by asrivkin, and i set up my own custom camera angles, custom sounds, and custom shorter pants with black shoes. i have it available for view at YouTube:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q0B-...el=kcstengelsr

Notes:
i did make some minor tweaks to asrivkin's park for this game and i did message asrivkin about them.
in retrospect i should have set the batting helmet colors for both teams to more match the colors of nopepper's ballcaps.
in retrospect i should have set the time of this game for early evening in order to later show sunset and night.

asrivkin has created a classic with his Field of Dreams ballpark.

thank you asrivkin!
