When is it Time to Promote Player

I have two good prospects in AAA whose ratings have increased over the year. Their stats aren't very good though. It is now the month of September in my league. Would this be a good time to call them up, or wait until their stats match their ratings?

This is an interesting question. For one thing, I think it depends if you ae using relative ratings or not. I myself finally decided against them, as I see them a bit of a crutch, and aren't always the most realistic way to evaluate players.

In light of this fact, I have a rule of thumb I go by when it comes to ratings.

Obviously individual tool ratings are the most important thing to look at when you are using ratings, but for the overall scout grade I usually adhere to this generally:

For AAA players, their overall rating should either be a 40 or 35. I will use stats as a determining factor as well...particularly if I am thinking of promoting a player on the lower end of the grade (35)

For AA players I do the same except the overall grades I use are 35 or 30, with 35 being high and 30 on the lower end of the scale.

A+ is 30 or 25

A is 25 or 20. When you get to the lower levels, the grades become less reliable, as you will see a lot of players rated as a 20. At these levels, it is especially important to rely on individual tool grades as well as stats to a greater degree than other levels.

I use stars as a rating 1-5 as far as overall and potential. That is how the game presented those ratings to me. I didn't even realize there was another rating system. what would your "40" translate to with stars? Is the numerical system better?

Since you're putting that much emphasis on the scouts' rating, what do you have Scouting Accuracy set to? If not "100% accurate", are you taking the average of your team and OSA scouts' ratings?

If you promote in September, and assuming you’re operating under the old CBA (40 man rosters), they’ll continue playing against AAA players AND MLB players. It’s not a bad time - or good time - to promote.
What I look at is starting the MLB Service Time and if you have to demote, MAYBE, burning an option unnecessarily

Me, if they’re not getting playing time to develop, I’d leave them in AAA
If I can start them 5-6 times a week, I’d promote him.

I am using the default AI evaluation settings of 65/20/10/5

The thing to remember is that your AI evaluation settings DOES take stats into account (provided you don't have it setup not to) So if I am using 65/20/10/5 as my evaluation settings, the overall grade is going to be based on those numbers. Now this doesn't mean you shouldn't look at each case individually though. You will find in some cases that players maybe over or under performing simply because they are miscast at a particular level. So therefore the numbers may not look as good as they could/should. So as an example, say you have a player who is rated a 35 and you have him at AA, and his numbers really stink. It could be that he's not being challenged at that level, and might need to get a look in AAA ball.

I think you have that wrong.
From the manual: "By default, OVR ratings are based exclusively on underlying actual ratings only."

In my opinion, the game has it right, the evaluation of a scout should not take stats into account. The whole point of the gm role, as we play it in the game, is dealing with the uncertainty created by the fact that we have two sources of data to evaluate players: scouts' opinions and stats.

If the OVR were to mesh scouts' opinions and stats in a way that reflects the user's preferences, then every decision regarding lineups, signings, trades, promotions/demotions could be bogged down to blindly acting according to what the OVR/POT rating says, since you would hardly have any data to contradict that.

I agree with this, and there was an option for this (in terms of display) at one time, but the option was removed several versions ago. The fact is, the overall rating is based on the AI evaluation settings.

Ratings will always be a part of the equation (even if you zero them out in the AI evaluation) no matter what, but the overall ratings is definitely a product of the weights.

I'll try to test this tonight. I'm not convinced what you are saying is true and the manual definitely says otherwise, but thankfully this is very easy to test.

But what is your Scouting Accuracy set to?
