Rain
I think this is true,
There are only rainouts before a game starts. When there is rain, there is never a rain delay, When there is a rain delay, the game is never called. Also, raindrops on the cameras or on the field would be a nice touch.

I have had games called after a rain delay, but it is rare. As IRL, the fields drain better, weather info has improved, so if they start a game, they expect to finish, even if showers roll through.
MLB has moved to calling games early. Just last week, the Phillies postponed their home opener from Thursday afternoon, which ended up warm and mostly sunny, to Friday, which was raw and cold. They got bad information on the timing of storms. I like OOTP describing a threat of rain as the game starts. I only wish I could have that weather information beforehand. I would consider passing over my ace, if it looked like he might not get to pitch a “full” game, or effectively lose a start. I’m not a fan o bullpen games; but, with the threat of interruption, a bullpen game actually makes sense. Another consideration is what effect a rain delay has on the pitchers. A delay of an hour or more should make it tough for the guys who were pitching and sat for an hour to get loose and return to the game. At the very least, they should be affected by “fatigue” in the sense of downgraded effectiveness. At worst, the injury risk should increase, as arms do not react well to that long at rest and then throwing hard.

I’ve been saying for a while that they need to do a better job of demarcating rain delays:
For one, they should animate them. Not by seeing rain on the field, but there should be some animated indication is happening. For example, switch to the action cam and have the players run off the field. While the field is empty, the play-by-play can indicate how long the rain delay is lasting and when it ends. This animated indication will alert the user that a pitching decision will be forthcoming. Perhaps there should even be a prompt that says, “would you like to keep your starting pitcher, or replace them?” |

If the rain delay is long enough,on the lineup screen all pitchers will be ready.

In contrast, the International League, through April 7th, has had 14 postponed games out of 77 intended games (18.2%), while the Pacific Coast League has had 4 postponed games out of 37 intended games (10.8%). These percentages will of course drop as the season progresses and the weather gets better. In terms of games called early, in the 2022 MLB season, there were 10 games called early out of 2,430 games played. That's 0.4%. The shortest game was just 27 outs; the longest, 48 outs. The average was 37.5, the median 36. Last edited by Le Grande Orange; 04-08-2023 at 07:10 PM. |

I'm playing the 1975 MLB season, and I had a game delayed and then called in the eighth inning.
