World League idea (is this possible?)

Hi all,

I'm a recent baseball convert and recently started working on some fictional world league in my head, I then discovered that OOTP's customisation is so deep that it might just be possible to make my idea and see how it pans out. I'd really appreciate it if someone told me how possible this idea is before I buy the game. I've scoured the forums here, and it seems most stuff is possible, but if anything I set out isn't, it would be great to know if a variation of it would be.

The League
So, the league will be split into 4 leagues of 20 teams, each with two conferences of 10 teams. Likely:

1. North America
2. Europe & Africa
3. Asia
4. South America/Oceania

The teams will play only those in their own league for the regular season, but for the playoffs they'll then play teams from all other leagues. This seems to be possible using the 'association' feature? I was thinking a playoff format of something like:

- The top team from each conference makes it to the final 16 automatically (filling 8 of the slots).
- The 2nd placed teams from each conference qualify automatically for a wildcard round, and play the 8 remaining teams with the best records across all 8 leagues.
- Those that win in the wildcard round go through to the final 16.


Player Generation

I know that each league has to have a nation. I'd set each league to have its nation as some central location that makes sense. E.g Asia might be China. As far as I understand it teams then don't have to be from that country to play in the league? Of course I'd want teams from all over Asia to play in the Asia league.

Could I make it so that players are generated into the overall draft pool based on countries in the league, rather than the league location? I'd want players being created from all countries, not just the one stated as the home of the league. This goes for all 4 leagues.

Finally for the draft, it seems possible to have an overall and regional one. Does that mean I could have for example 3 rounds where all teams can pick players from anywhere in the world, followed by the next 10 rounds being players from their region, followed by the final rounds being only players from their own country? Or am I asking too much?! I would do this for the inaugral draft, but then also for any subsequent yearly drafts.

It sounds like the game can randomly generate fictional players to start with, which is great.

In this fictional world I'll make all countries have more or less the same level of baseball talent.

I know I'd need to work out salary caps and all that complex stuff, but I'm sure I can figure that out if the above overarching structure is possible.

The short answer is YES.

My recommendation to you would be this: Go to the Dynasties Forum and just slowly work your way through the opening post of any threads covering a universe / setup similar to the one you're wanting to build.

Usually the poster will have some explanation as to how certain decisions were arrived at, so just work your way through taking notes. Feel free to ask questions - most will be forthcoming with their assistance and responses.

Once you get started, save it along the way at regular intervals. Test plenty. Note the results and hone it all into the desired shape.

It may seem daunting but, believe me, this part of the process ends up not just being fun but also the part where you learn so much about this unbelievable game.

The WBC didn't have teams play 162 games to separate the contenders from the pretenders and then put the pretenders in the playoffs.

Hi all. just wanted to say thanks again for all your help. I've spent a couple of weeks messing about with things and have decided to simplify the system and bring everything under one big league. So I've got two subleagues ('The Americas & Oceania', and 'Europe, Asia & Africa'), each that have 4 divisions of 14 teams in, so 112 teams in total.

I'm planning to start writing up about the league in the relevant forum, and might even ask if anyone's keen to design logos for any of the teams, which would of course be credited wherever used. At the moment I'm rocking a variety of ones pinched from the great cephasjames pack, and some icons I've found on flaticons.

I'll start a new thread once I'm ready to start sharing news on the league. Likely with a recap of each of the first ten years of it, followed then by more detailed looks at future seasons.

Great news! The other thing I'd suggest is you think about scheduling and get one of the fantastic guys on this board to make you a custom schedule to use.
