Babe Ruth clone
Hi folks! I tried a scenario with the current MLB where I added a Babe Ruth clone to see how he did. He got drafted but did no more than low minors and then fizzled out. I wonder if anyone has tried this and what is the best way to import a historical player. I think I had him based on his 3 best years but I wanted him to start at 19 like he did in history. Not sure if he just sucks in this modern era or I should have did something different. All thoughts welcome! Thanks

I have never tried this; but I'm curious about it.
Was your clone Ruth set up to be a SP and OF both? I recall threads where the AI did not know how to handle a two-way player in 1919, and Ruth suffered because of that. Ruth's path was unique. He started young; but that was as a SP. He pitched several years before regularly playing the field. If the clone reflects that history, it might well confuse the Ai. Of note, I am playing a 1915 sim where young Babe walked across the street from the minor league Orioles to the Federal League Terrapins. He is relatively highly rated as a SP and as an OF, considering his young age. But I have not played far enough into the season to have any real results to report. No HR yet.

If you're using OOTP's development engine, anything can happen. Clones won't necessarily develop exactly like their real-life counterparts. Players can fail to develop in the minors, and if a future star hasn't started to reach his full potential by the age of 23 or 24, it becomes increasingly likely that he will never reach that potential.
Just as in real life, if a player starts reaching his mid-20s and he still doesn't have MLB talent, there is a good chance that he is going to peak at his current level or not much higher, and he may never make the majors. There are exceptions, but what you'll often see is that their potential will begin to drop, so, even if they improve, they have a lower ceiling. I've just watched this happen with Mark Langston in a mid-80s simulation. I started the game in 1985, and he had great potential based on his peak seasons, but due to his poor stats in 1985, his movement and control were quite low. Plus, he was already 24 years old. So, he was assigned to AAA, and now that we're halfway through 1986, his ratings have failed to improve, and his overall potential has now dropped. In theory, he could still develop, but it looks like his ceiling will be lower, and, since he's now 25, it is much less likely that he will become a star SP. |

Great info, Charlie! Thank you! I suppose I will do a few different runs and compare how different his career ends up. I suppose I wouldn't want his career to go exactly as it did in real life anyway.

Thanks to Ohtani, OOTP now has settings that recognize two-way players. That will no doubt help my version of Ruth in 1915. I intend to see whether his pitching or hitting predominates, as he matures.

Have you considered adjusting the player settings to recognize Babe Ruth as a two-way player, allowing him to pitch as well, and how might this impact his career trajectory in your simulation?

Here is Ruth from my ABF...this predates the 2 Way option. I moved him from SP to Of after so many years. He is the all time leader in HR by around 450.
