This might be the best-offseason I've ever seen for an AI
Whoever is running the Red Sox made out like a bandit TWICE in the same off-season.
They picked up Felipe Alou and prospect 3B Doug Rader for SP Earl Wilson. He was 13-11, 3.66 for the Red Sox before slumping to 9-16, 4.31 the Giants. Alou, on the other hand, was the batting champion, MVP and won a Gold Glove in RF.
They also gave up a pitching prospect for Bob Gibson, who was coming off a down season for the Cardinals at 13-19, 4.37. But Gibson rebounded to 19-11 and led the league with a 2.20 ERA. He came just a hair from winning the Cy Young. I think he might be a keeper.
With the trades, Boston improved their record from 82-80 to 104-58 and won the pennant.
TL;DR Boston traded for both the MVP and the near-Cy, giving up little of value for them.
