Rebuilding the Phillies (2027-
I've been playing OOTP for a while and I always wanted to do a dynasty, but couldn't think of something.
Inspired by the excellent dynasty report: Zero to Hero - A Scotsman in the MLB by benp28, I've simmed until the 2027 offseason and take over a team that just fired their GM. I had two choices: the Texas Rangers and the Philadelphia Phillies. I ultimately chose the Phillies as they're in rough shape heading to the offseason with a lot of veterans tied to hefty contracts and one of the worst minor league systems. I have the chance to have a huge budget of $274 million, good for 7th in the majors. First, let's see what happened to the Phillies prior to the 2027 offseason. |

Previous GM Trade Review
2024 Season
Traded 32-year old minor league 2B Esteban Quiroz to the San Francisco Giants, getting 23-year old minor league 1B Garrett Frechette and 21-year old minor league SS Jose Ramos in return. WAR shift: +0.1 for PHI Quiroz never played for the Giants and is now retired while both Frechette and Ramos are still griding in the Phillies organization. Ramos accumulated 0.1 WAR in the MLB, so a win in my book Traded 31-year old LF Kyle Schwarber to the Toronto Blue Jays, getting 23-year old minor league LHP Adam Macko in return. WAR shift: -0.5 for PHI Schwarber played for a year in a half in Toronto, slashing .186/.311/.414 for a 100 wRC+, hitting 46 HR and 108 RBI in 217 games, while Macko has traveled between the MLB and AAA for the Phillies, missing the start of the 2027 season due to a torn rotator cuff. He’s currently 5-10 with a 5.08 ERA and a 91 ERA+ for Philadelphia. While Toronto still has the advantage, it could change in the future. Traded 31-year old RHP Spencer Turnbull to the Toronto Blue Jays, getting 24-year old minor league LF Devonte Brown in return. WAR shift: +0.4 for PHI Turnbull struggled for the 19 games in appeared out of the bullpen in Toronto while Devonte Brown is currently a free agent. He never played in the MLB and was released by Philly in September 2025. He last played for the Sussex County Miners in the Frontier League in 2026. Traded 28-year old LHP Ranger Suarez to the San Francisco Giants, getting 24-year old minor league LF Heliot Ramos, 22-year old minor league RHP Adam Maier, and 23-year old minor league CF Grant McCray in return. WAR shift: -4.9 for PHI Suarez pitched for a year and a half in San Franciso, posting a 11-21 record with a 4.25 ERA and a 100 ERA+. Ramos never played in the MLB after a brief stint in the MLB and is currently retired. Adam Maier pitched for a year and half in the Phillies organization, but topped in A+ ball. He’s currently pitching in the Arizona Complex League for the Dodgers at 26. Grant McCray made his MLB debut for the Phillies in 2026, appearing in 10 games, slashing .258/.303/.355 in 33 plate appearances. He remains in the organization, but played the entirety of 2027 in AAA. Traded 33-year old C J.T. Realmuto to the San Francisco Giants, getting 20-year old minor league SS Walker Martin and 24-year old minor league RHP Mat Olsen in return. WAR shift: +0.2 for PHI The veteran catcher was traded to the Giants and signed a lucrative 5-year $106.6M contract. He’s slashing .240/.296/.379 in 348 games for the Giants, missing significant time in 2025 due to numerous injury. He’s a defensive liability at catcher and his bat declined in recent years. He’s still under contract until 2030. Walker Martin reached A-ball with the Phillies but was released by the organization in 2027. He last played in A+ for MIL. Mat Olsen appeared in 39 games for the Phillies, accumulating a 4-0 record and 4 saves in 43 innings, with a 4.60 ERA and a 101 ERA +. He pitched the majority of the 2027 season down in AAA and appeared in 8.2 innings in the MLB, but struggled at both levels, posting a 6.70 ERA in AAA and a 8.31 ERA in the MLB. Traded 27-year old LHP Cristopher Sanchez to the St. Louis Cardinals, getting 17-year old minor league LF Santiago Ramos in return. WAR shift: -2.9 for PHI Sanchez started 22 games for St. Louis, posting a 8-8 record with a 4.54 ERA and a 95 ERA+, before being released in 2026 after he suffered a torn rotator cuff. In 2027, he appeared out of the bullpen for the Atlanta Braves. Santiago Ramos was in Phillies org for about 4 months, being a part of the trade to get Jose Trevino in the following offseason. Traded 29-year old LHP Gregory Soto to the Toronto Blue Jays, getting 20-year old minor league LHP Brandon Barriera, 24-year old minor league RF Damiano Palmegiani, and 24-year old minor league 3B Sebastian Espino in return. WAR shift: -1.5 for PHI Soto appeared in 80 games for Toronto going 3-4 with 14 saves, a 3.48 ERA and a 123 ERA+. He signed with the Yankees as a free agent before the 2026 season and was traded to the San Diego Padres where he remains a reliable reliever. Barriera has played as high as AA, but as yet to appear in a MLB game for Philadelphia. He has yet to unlock his potential, but remains in the Phillies organization. Palmegiani was traded to the Rays 4 months later as part of the deal to land Zack Littell and Espino was a perennial AA-baller for Philadelphia, but he was released in September 2027. He’s still a free agent. Sub-total: -9.1 WAR 2025 Offseason Traded 20-year old minor league 1B Kehden Hettiger to the Colorado Rockies, getting 29-year old RHP German Marquez and $60,000 in cash in return. WAR swing: +1.8 for PHI Hettiger is still stuck in A-ball at 23 in the Rockies org and will most probably never play in the MLB as he never fulfilled his potential. Meanwhile Marquez started 32 games for the Phillies in 2025, going 10-12 with a 4.46 ERA and a 96 ERA+ in 157.1 innings before he elected for free agency. He started for the Oakland Patriots in 2026, before he was to the World Series winning White Sox team, where he was used as a relief pitcher, which he still is with the Minnesota Twins. Traded 23-year old minor league RF Marcus Lee Sang and 21-year old minor league C Brahian Silva to the Minnesota Twins, getting 34-year old C Christian Vázquez (retaining 80%) and $2,000,000 in cash in return. WAR swing: +1.0 for PHI Marcus Lee Sang is a fringe AAA player for the Twins at 26 year-old and will probably never play in the big league. Silva was released by the Twins at the end of the 2025 season after struggling in rookie ball and bounced around independent league rosters in the offseason before joining the Bournemouth Bears in the BNBL where he’s had some playing time. Vasquez appeared in 49 games for Philadelphia in 2025, slashing .279/.304/.424 with a 94 wRC+ as the backup catcher. He became a free agent at the end of the season and after going a year unsigned, he retired from baseball at 36. Traded 17-year old minor league RF Santiago Ramos to the New York Yankees, getting 32-year old C Jose Trevino, 23-year old minor league C Agustin Ramirez, and $4,600,000 in cash in return. WAR swing: -0.4 for PHI Santiago Ramos never really developed and still has untapped potential at 20 in rookie ball where he has respectable numbers. Meanwhile, Trevino struggled heavily with Philadelphia, slashing .197/.218/.283 in 87 games with a 30 wRC+, but with great framing. He became a free agent at the end of the season and signed with the Patriots where he won a gold glove in 2026 and signed a minor league deal with Colorado in 2027, but spent the entire season in AAA. Ramirez never made it out of the minor leagues with Philadelphia and was ultimately sent to Milwaukee a year later in the Taijuan Walker deal. Traded 30-year old RHP Jose Ruiz, 20-year old minor league 2B Bryan Rincon, and $600,000 in cash to the Los Angeles Angels, getting 19-year old minor league LF Randy De Jesus in return. WAR swing: +0.6 for PHI Ruiz appeared in 55 games for the Angels, starting 4, posting a 0-3 record with a 5.14 ERA in 53.2 innings. He spent the entire 2026 season in AAA and was released in the offseason. He then signed a minor league deal with the Braves, where he’s been a minor leaguer since, with slim chances of making it back to the big league. Rincon spent a couple of years in the minors, but made his big league debut in 2027, appearing in 95 games for the Angels, slashing .197/.303/.290 with a 66 wRC+. He possesses great fielding, which makes him an asset defensively. Randy De Jesus is still grinding in the minor league, reaching AA in 2027, but struggling at the plate. He possesses above average power, but lacks the plate discipline and contact ability to be an effective big leaguer. Traded 30-year old RHP Michael Rucker to the St. Louis Cardinals, getting 24-year old minor league RHP Gordon Graceffo and 19-year old minor league RF Kelvin Alcantara in return. WAR swing: -0.2 for PHI Rucker appeared in19 games in relief for the Cards in 2025, going 2-1 with a 3.67 ERA and 116 ERA + in 27 innings of work. He became a free agent and signed a minor league deal with the Rockies for 2026 and a minor league deal with the Braves for 2027, but never pitched in the MLB again. He’s still a part of the Braves org. Graceffo is a power pitcher with starter potential. He was drafted by the Padres in the Rule 5 draft, but the Padres sent him back to Philly after 20 appearances, including 8 starts. He pitched in 13 games in relief with the Phillies in 2026, going 0-1 with 1 save and a 6.59 ERA. He went back to AAA in 2027 where he struggled as a starter with a 6.38 ERA. Alcantara finally reached single-A in 2027 at 22, but struggled quite a bit at the plate, but his good eye is his main asset, netting a .391 OBP against a .208 batting average. He’ll most probably never make it to the bigs. Traded 32-year old RF Nick Castellanos (retaining 80%) and $3,530,000 in cash to the Arizona Diamondbacks, getting 19-year old minor league 2B Jansel Luis and 21-year old minor league RF Eskoly De Jesus in return. WAR swing: -0.5 for PHI Castellanos led the league in 2025 with 130 RBI for the DBacks, but regressed a bit in 2026. He ended his Arizona career slashing .259/.303/.458 with 53 HR and 218 RBI in 278 games and a 100 wRC+. He became a free agent at the end of 2026 then signed a one-year deal with the Mariners, to mixed results. Jansel Luis made his M’LB debut in 2027 after impressing in AAA. He appeared in 99 games, slashing .320/.363/.457 with a 124 wRC+. The future looks bright for the young player, although many thing he over-performed based on his actual skills. De Jesus is still in high-A at 24 which doesn’t bode well for his future. Traded 19-year old minor league RF TayShaun Walton to the Chicago Cubs, getting 30-year old LF Ian Happ (retaining 80%) and $3,380,000 in cash in return. WAR swing: -0.1 for PHI Walton made it to single-A at 22 and posted a -1.3 WAR in the Cubs org. He’s below average in every metric. Happ had a good year with the Phillies in 2025, slashing .259/.347/.435, but he regressed hard in 2026, going .206/.291/.362. The Phillies didn’t extend him at the end of his contract and he then signed a contract with the Cincinnati Reds for 2027 where he performed well, before he was released by the team and picked up again by the Phillies where he had horrible numbers. Perhaps he just doesn’t like playing in Philly. Traded 30-year old LF David Dahl to the Chicago Cubs, getting 24-year old 1B BJ Murray Jr. and 22-year old minor league 2B Luis Maza in return. WAR swing: 0 Dahl had an average year in Chicago, slashing .236/.312/.306 with a 73 wRC+. He was sent to the minors in 2026 and hs never been back in the MLB, despite signing deals with the Nationals and being traded to the Reds. Murray has been a fringe AAAA player for the Phillies, but never made it to the show, although with Bryce Harper at first, he won’t get many opportunities. Maza struggled in the minors with the Phillies and was released following the 2027 season. Traded 28-year old minor league CF Matt Kroon to the Baltimore Orioles, getting 24-year old 2B Carter Young and 21-year old minor league C Jesus Galiz in return. WAR swing: +0.1 for PHI Kroon had 8 plate appearances for the Orioles in 2026, going 1 for 7 with a double, 3 RBIs, a walk and a strikeout. That’s his whole major league career. He was sent back down the minors and retired at the end of the 2026 season. Carter Young made it to the bigs with his defense alone. He made his MLB debut in 2026 and has been up and down from MLB to AAA and AA since then. In 29 games, he has a .235/.278/.329 slash line with a 62 wRC+, but his bat is well below average the level of a big league player. Galiz is a decent defensive catcher with a slightly below average bat, but had a great year in high-A in 2027. He’s still far from the majors. WAR sub-total : -6.8 2025 season Traded 24-year old minor league RHP Cristian Hernandez to the Texas Rangers, getting 33-year old minor league C Andrew Knapp in return. WAR swing: 0.0 Hernandez was a fringe AAAA player for the Rangers for a couple of years and despite good years in the minors, the Rangers released him at the end of the 2027 season. Knapp never played for Philadelphia and played in AAA for the entire 2025 season. He was let go at the end of the season and spent the last two years of his career playing in independent leagues. He’s trying for a comeback at 36 this offseason. Traded 23-year old minor league RF Leandro Pineda to the New York Mets, getting 31-year old minor league C Austin Allen in return. WAR swing: 0.0 Pineda is now a fringe AAAA player on the Mets 40-man roster, but he hasn’t played a game in the big league. With below average defense, but good power at the plate, he could make his debut someday, but he must clean up his game in the minors. Allen never played in the majors in Philadelphia, but he was impressive in AAA. He opted for free agency and has been in the Blue Jays organization since 2026, but still hasn’t made it back to the show. Traded 22-year old minor league 1B Blake Burke to the Colorado Rockies, getting 33-year old RHP Lou Trivino and 22-year old minor league LF Enmanuel Terrero in return. WAR swing: +0.4 for PHI Blake Burke was a 4th round pick in the 2024 draft by the Phillies out of college, with hopes that he could become a great power bat. He never made it past rookie ball with the Rockies and was released by the organization and has since been a member of the Kansas City Monarchs in the American Association. Trivino appeared in 18 games for the Phillies, posting a 2-2 record with a 4.66 ERA and a 92 ERA +. He became a free agent at the end of the season and has appeared for the Royals and the Dodgers in 2026, but he retired after suffering from a shoulder injury. Terrero is an AAAA player juggling between AA, AAA and the Majors in 2027é Je appeared in 4 games in 2027 and he possesses an average bat and average defense. It remains to be seen if he’ll play with the Phillies once again. Traded 23-year old minor league 2B Robert Moore to the Oakland Patriots, getting 36-year old LHP Matt Moore in return. WAR swing: -0.4 for PHI Moore never played for the A’s and was traded in the offseason to the Mets where he reached AAA in 2027. It remains to be seen if he’ll make it to the show. Matt Moore appeared in 22 games for Philly, going 3-1 with a 5.40 ERA and a 79 ERA+. He opted for free agency and signed with the Dodgers in the offseason but retired following an elbow injury in spring training. Traded 31-year old RHP Joel Payamps to the Arizona Diamondbacks, getting 36-year old C Travis d'Arnaud and 19-year old minor league LF Gian Zapata in return. WAR swing: -1.6 for PHI Payamps has been a member of the Diamondbacks since the trade, posting a 5-0 record with a 4.34 ERA and a 107 ERA+ in 197 innings of work. He remains under contract with the team until 2028. D’Arnaud was yet another catcher for the Phillies and didn’t particularly stood out, slashing .221/.284/.375 for a 77 wRC+ with below average defense. He signed with the Rockies in the offseason, before calling it quits at the end of the 2026 season. Zapata just had a great season in single-A at 21 and his approaching his potential as an average bat and slightly above average defender. It would take a few years for him to reach the majors. WAR sub-total: -8.4 for PHI 2026 OFFSEASON Traded 30-year old RHP Connor Brogdon to the Minnesota Twins, getting 20-year old minor league 2B Yilber Herrera in return. WAR swing: -1.3 for PHI Brogdon went down to AAA and up to the MLB many times with the Twins but is still with the team, posting a 7-2 record with three saves with a 2.55 ERA and a 169 ERA + in 98.2 innings with the team between 2026 and 2027. Meanwhile, Herrera struggled in high-A in 2027 and remains years away from the MLB at almost 23. Traded 30-year old LHP Jose Alvarado to the New York Yankees, getting 22-year old minor league RHP Carlos Lagrange in return. WAR swing: -2.0 for PHI Alvarado was traded before the 2026 season to the Yankees and was decent for the Yankees, going 4-6 with 28 saves in 57.1 innings, along with a 3.61 ERA and a 116 ERA+. He eventually rejected the Yankees qualifying offer and signed back with the Phillies before the 2027 season. Lagrange topped in AAA with PHI with starter potential, but was never able to get decent control. He was eventually traded to the Reds for first baseman Mark Mathias in June 2027. Traded 33-year old RHP Taijuan Walker (retaining 80%), 24-year old minor league C Agustin Ramirez, and $1,670,000 in cash to the Milwaukee Brewers, getting 23-year old minor league LF Malakhi Knight in return. WAR swing: +0.6 for PHI Taijuan Walker was traded on the last year on his contract to the Brewers and while he was better than he was with the Phillies, he didn’t exactly set the world on fire with Milwaukee, going 5-11 in 135.1 innings, with a 5.45 ERA and a 82 ERA+. Ramirez was only a minor leaguer for the Brewers and they eventually traded him in June 2026 to the Yankees where he seems to find his potential and excelled in AAA. He’s a real possibility to make the Roster in New York in 2028. Malahki Knight had excellent defense, but his weak bat prevented him from making his way out of rookie ball. He was released by the Phillies in April 2026, 5 months after the trade and has since been playing in England for the London Capitals. Traded 21-year old minor league 3B William Bergolla to the Cleveland Guardians, getting 33-year old RHP Ben Lively and 24-year old minor league LF Joe Lampe in return. WAR swing: +0.6 for PHI. Bergolla is a fringe AAAA 23-year old with the Guardian org and could eventually reach the majors due to his above average defense and his ability to see the ball well. The veteran hurler Ben Lively has been used in the starting rotation with an opener in 2027 after spending a year in the bullpen in 2026. He’s posted a 16-11 record with a 4.62 ERA in 222.2 innings and a 101 ERA+ in his return to Philadelphia. Lampe has been a good player in AAA and might very well see playing time eventually if the Phillies embrace the rebuild completely. Traded 22-year old minor league RF Yemal Flores to the Chicago Cubs, getting 34-year old RHP Jameson Taillon (retaining 80%), 24-year old minor league LF Jared McKenzie, and $3,430,000 in cash in return. WAR swing: -0.6 for PHI Flores remains in the minors and will never reach the majors as he continues to struggle offensively in A+ and his defense isn’t good enough to justify a promotion. He was eventually traded to the Giants in exchange for veteran Chris Bassitt. Jameson Taillon didn’t fare well at all in Philiadelphia, posting a 4-4 record in 81 innings, with a 5.00 ERA and a 92 ERA+. He didn’t sign an extension with the Phillies and eventually joined the Pirates in 2027 where he suffered and elbow injury that ended his career. Mackenzie topped in AA and was released by the Phillies and signed with the Kane County Cougars in 2027. Traded 30-year old RHP Luis Ortiz to the New York Mets, getting 22-year old minor league RHP Nate Knowles in return. WAR swing: -0.9 for PHI Ortiz did okay with the Mets in 2026, going 0-2 with a 4.29 ERA in 50.1 innings with a 104 ERA+. He was ultimately put on waivers in March 2027 by the Colorado Rockies, where he pitches out of the bullpen. Nate Knowles never appeared in the MLB with the Phillies and was eventually released by the Phillies in June 2027 after he failed to stand out in the minors. He was picked up on the same day by the St. Louis Cards, where he appeared in 12 games with a 1.69 ERA in 21.1 innings. Traded 20-year old minor league C Cade Arrambide to the Toronto Blue Jays, getting 27-year old C Alejandro Kirk (retaining 75%) and $220,000 in cash in return. WAR swing: +1.6 for PHI A former first round pick in 2024, Arrambide is still in A ball with Toronto where he’s an excellent defensive catcher with a decent bat if he reaches his full potential. Kirk was a rental catcher who did pretty well in Philadelphia, slashing .256/.330/.376 and a 87 wRC+, combined with great defense. He didn’t extend with the Phillies and went unsigned in the offseason, before joining Toronto on a one-year deal and he was traded to the Cincinnati Reds, where he won World Series MVP in 2027. Traded 24-year old minor league RHP Reese Dutton to the Washington Nationals, getting 37-year old RHP Stephen Strasburg (retaining 80%), 23-year old minor league 3B Jack Penney, and $8,500,000 in cash in return. WAR swing: +1.2 for PHI Reese Dutton was simply a throwaway pitcher who never had the potential to reach the majors. He was released by the Nationals three months after the trade and since signed with the Yankees, Angels, Rangers, Guardians, Braves and Tigers, where he never appeared in a level above rookie ball. He eventually signed in independent leagues, where he played with the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs and the Sussex County Miners. Strasburg had a pretty good run with the Phillies, posting a 3-4 record with a 4.57 ERA and a 101 ERA+ in 67 innings. His season was cut short by injuries, but he’s still pitching, signing a deal with the Cards in the offseason. Penney reached AA for the Phillies but was eventually released. He’s now playing for the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs. WAR sub-total: -9.2 for PHI 2026 SEASON Traded 17-year old minor league C Julio Campos and 23-year old minor league LHP John Sosa to the San Diego Padres, getting 33-year old minor league RHP Luis Perdomo and 17-year old minor league LHP Luis Moya in return. WAR swing: 0.1 for PHI Campos continues to prove hi good potential, by reaching A-ball at 18 with the Padres where he fared pretty well. Sosa is a fringe prospect who was decent in A+ ball, but scouts are convinced that he’ll never make it to the majors due to his immense lack of control. Perdomo was okay-ish for the Phillies, going 2-0 with a 5.08 ERA and a 91 ERA+ in 28.1 innings before being released. He eventually signed with the Cards in the offseason and was traded in July 2027 to the Mets. Luis Moya is a project arm, a finesse pitcher who allows a ton of home runs, but scouts are conviced he has #4-5 starter potential. Traded 37-year old LHP Chris Sale to the Cincinnati Reds, getting 24-year old minor league RHP Ty Floyd and 22-year old minor league RHP Maison Martinez in return. WAR swing: -0.7 for PHI Sale was a big ticket signing for the Phillies, but didn’t really stand out in the starting rotation, going 4-6 with a 5.61 ERA and 82 ERA+ in 19 starts over 85 innings. He did better with the Red, posting a 5-3 record and a 4.4 ERA and 107 ERA+ in 61.1 innings over 11 starts. He retired at the end of the 2026 season. Floyd wasn’t given much time by the Phillies to show his potential, he was released only five months after the trade. He signed a minor league deal with the Rangers where scouts are convinced he still has #5 starter potential if he can control his pitch a little better. Maison Martinez suffered the same treatment, he was released a couple of months after the trade and is now in the Guardians organization, where he’s doing okay, but probably never play in the MLB. Traded 30-year old minor league 3B Kody Clemens to the St. Louis Cardinals, getting 19-year old minor league LHP Jaxon Baker and 23-year old minor league CF Joshua Baez in return. WAR swing: -0.1 for PHI Kody Clemens came up for a couple of games in 2026 but was traded to the Cards where he gets the occasional call-ups since 2026. He has a .167/.318/.296 slash line with 2 home runs and 7 RBI in 66 plate appearances. Baker is still in rookie ball, but scouts have doubt about his future in the MLB, as he’s not good enough to start and lacks effective stuff to be efficient in the bullpen. Baez is an average player, who’ll probably end up being a career minor leaguer. WAR sub-total: -10.0 for PHI 2027 OFFSEASON Traded 30-year old 1B Alec Bohm to the New York Mets, getting 22-year old minor league RF Nolan Schubart and 22-year old minor league RHP AJ Russell in return. WAR swing: +0.2 for PHI Bohm didn’t fare really well with the Mets, suffering a drop in production, with a .249/.305/.346 slash line and a 81 wRC+ with only five home runs in 90 games. He’s still under contract until the end of 2028. Schubart is a power bat in the minors, but is prone to strike outs, which limits his progression. He ended the season in A-ball, mashing 20 home runs in 80 games, but with a 40% strikeout rate. The Phillies gave up on Russell almost instantly. He’s now a member of the Sioux City Explorers in an independent league. Traded 23-year old minor league RHP Micah Ottenbreit and 20-year old minor league RHP Rainy Mota to the Atlanta Braves, getting 32-year old LHP Dylan Lee and $1,210,000 in cash in return. WAR swing: +0.1 for PHI Ottenbreit is a decent minor league pitcher, but he’ll probably never sniff the majors and the same can be said for Rainy Mota. Dylan Lee has been a welcome addition to a struggling Phillies bullpen, but he struggled a bit with damage control, going 4-5 with 2 saves and a 4.58 ERA and 105 ERA+ in 88.1 innings. Traded 24-year old 2B Jared Serna to the Seattle Mariners, getting 30-year old C Cal Raleigh (retaining 80%) and $240,000 in cash in return. WAR swing: +4.9 for PHI The Phillies traded 2026 standout rookie Jared Serna to the Mariners for yet another catcher. He started the season with the Mariners as a bench player but he wasn’t able to replicate his Philadelphia production, with a .222/.275/.330 slash line in 193 plate appearances. He was sent down to the minors where he mashed in AAA with an OPS over 1.000 in 216 plate appearances. Serna is too good to keep failing, but only time will tell. Cal Raleigh has been one the best player on the roster in 2027, with a .233/.305/.514 slash line with 35 home runs and 91 RBI, good for a 117 wRC+, combined with great defense. Traded 23-year old minor league LF Emaarion Boyd to the Detroit Tigers, getting 37-year old RF Mark Canha (retaining 80%), 23-year old minor league RHP Roman Kimball, and $530,000 in cash in return. WAR swing: -2.1 for PHI Boyd is a high contract and flashy player, but he didn’t make the opening day roster in Detroit., where he spend the entire year in the minor leagues, with a 139 wRC+ in AA and a 109 wRC+ in AAA. Canha was an immense disappointment in Philadelphia, struggling to produce offensively and being useless on defense. He ended the season slashing .225/.306/.312 for a 70 wRC+.He retired at the end of the 2027 season. Kimball is still in the minor leagues and at 24, most scouts agree and he’ll never make it to the majors. WAR sub-total: -6.1 for PHI 2027 SEASON Traded 27-year old minor league RF Ethan Wilson to the Cincinnati Reds, getting 23-year old minor league RHP Evan Chrest and 24-year old minor league RHP Khal Stephen in return. WAR swing: -0.1 for PHI Wilson had his chance in the majors with the Reds, with 13 plate appearances, with 4 hits, 2 doubles, 3 RBI and 6 strikeouts. He retired at the end of the 2027 season. Chrest is an interesting arm for the Phillies with starter potential, but he’s not above average at anything right now. Khal Stephen was released immediately after the trade and is now playing for the Essex Arrows in Great Britain, as a starter. Traded 24-year old minor league RHP Carlos Lagrange to the Cincinnati Reds, getting 32-year old minor league 1B Mark Mathias in return. WAR swing: +0.1 for PHI Lagrange was on the verge of reaching the majors, but struggled a lot in AAA for the Phillies, so they sent him away to the Reds, where he suffered an injury and only had one start for the Louisville Bats in AAA where he allowed only two solo home runs in 6 ininngs. Mathias only had 10 plate appearances with Philadelphia, with two hits, a home run and 2 RBI before he was sent down, where he struggled in AAA at 33 years-old. Traded 39-year old RHP Craig Kimbrel to the Cleveland Guardians getting 19-year old minor league LF Juan Vallejo and 19-year old minor league CF Juneiker Caceres in return WAR swing: -0.3 for PHI Kimbrel was decent with the Guardians with a 3.92 ERA and a 109 ERA + in 20.2 innings. He retired at the end of the season. Vallejo is a long term project with the potential to be all around offensive player, but with below average speed and average defense. Caceres is a pretty bad player all around, projected for a way below average bat, average speed and average defense. Traded 35-year old RHP Luke Jackson and 19-year old minor league CF Luis Guerrero to the Milwaukee Brewers, getting 23-year old minor league CF Dylan O'Rae and 21-year old minor league 1B Cal Miller in return. WAR swing: -0.2 for PHI Jackson was pretty good for Milwaukee, going 5-0 with a 2.93 ERA and a 159 ERA+ in 30.2 innings.Luis Guerrero is a long way from the majors, but is projected to be an above average bat, with decent speed and above-average defense. Dylan O’Rae hit .214 in AAA in 2027, with a good eye at the plate and average contact ability, but way below average power, combined with elite speed and above-average defense. Cal Miller was recycled as a catcher by the Phillies, projected to be an average contact guy, with below average eye and power, average speed and average defense. Traded 30-year old RF Josh Naylor to the Seattle Mariners, getting 18-year old minor league RF Jorge Rivera and 23-year old minor league RHP Geoff Haude in return. WAR swing: +0.1 for PHI It wasn’t easy for Naylor in his return to Seattle, hitting only .245 with 7 home runs and a 94 wRC+. Rivera is an interesting project for the Phillies, projecting to be an above average bat, with average speed and defense. Haude could eventually make his way to the bullpen in the majors with a great slider and above average fastball, but he has to find a way to keep the ball in the park first. Traded 23-year old minor league RF Jackson Strong and 19-year old minor league RHP Julio Serrano to the Texas Rangers, getting 29-year old minor league RF Sandro Fabian in return. WAR swing: +0.1 for PHI Strong has a great year in AAA for Texas and has the tools to eventually play in the majors at some point. Serrano is a long shot, but scouts say he could eventually become a #5-starter. Fabian is essentially a worse version of Strong but 6 years older. He hit .271/.316/.477 in 114 plate appearances for Philly. Traded 25-year old RHP Mick Abel to the Cleveland Guardians, getting 25-year old LF Chase DeLauter, 23-year old minor league LHP Jackson Humphries, and 19-year old minor league LF Rodolfo Quijano in return. WAR swing: -0.6 for PHI Abel struggled with Philadelphia in 2026 and 2027, so they traded him he was still salvageable. He did really well in 10 starts with the Guardians, going 4-1 with a 2.59 ERA and a 165 ERA+ DeLauter is an interesting player who still hasn’t matured completely. He hit .276/.330/.424 with the Phillies with a 105 wRC+. The Phillies org is sure he can unlock extra power to go with his above average skills at the plate. Humphries is a decent young arm, but offers nothing flashy, other than his 98 mph fastball. He had a 4.82 ERA in 28 innings and a 100 ERA+ for Philadelphia. He has potential to be a #4-5 starter, but has yet to prove he can take on the responsibility. Quijano is another project, who projects to have an above average bat with below average eye, with pretty bad speed and average defense. WAR Total: -7 |
