Sky High Blue Jays - 2008
Gm 1
Toronto 5 New York Y 4 Several Jays looked good at the plate, and Overbay is definitely back to his gold-glovin’ ways. Let’s go Jays! The final score was 5-4. Toronto pitcher Roy Halladay had a fine performance. Halladay got the win, improving to 1-0. He gave up 6 hits and walked 2 over 7 innings. He allowed 2 runs. Scott Downs earned the save for Toronto, his 1st of the year. Aaron Hill helped out the Toronto cause in the top of the third inning with a run-scoring sacrifice fly. For the game, the second baseman drew 1 walk. "If we keep winning the close games," Hill said, "we'll be in good shape at the end." BASERUNNING SB: D. Eckstein (1) FIELDING Errors: M. Scutaro (1) oo Gm 2 Toronto 2 New York Y 8 In the 8-2 New York win over Toronto, the impact of Alex Rodriguez was substantial. Rodriguez, who is a 11-time All-Star, was 3 for 4 with 2 home runs and a double, while adding 4 RBI and scoring twice. Mike Mussina got the win, improving to 1-0. He held the Blue Jays to 2 runs on 3 hits over 6.2 innings, while striking out 6 and walking 1. Toronto drops to 1-1. Said losing manager Frank Weatherbe: "Obviously, we wished for a better outcome." Marco Scutaro had x-rays today after being hit on the hand by a pitch yesterday. Luckily, the X-rays were negative and Scooter should be good to go. The Jays couldn’t really afford an injury to Scutaro, since Rolen is expected to be out for quite a while longer. oo Gm 3 Toronto 2 New York Y 1 Toronto right-hander Dustin McGowan helped his team edge New York by the score of 2-1. McGowan kept the opposing lineup in check. McGowan, now 1-0, was the winner. In 6 innings, he gave up 7 hits, while striking out 5, walking 1, and allowing 1 run. The Blue Jays got a big at-bat from catcher Gregg Zaun. For the game, Zaun went 1 for 2 with a home run and a walk, while adding 2 RBI and scoring once. In the top of the fifth, with a runner on 1st, he stroked a 2-run home run. His 1st home run of the season gave Toronto a 2-1 lead. "The old adage is true," said Zaun. "Good pitching stops good hitting." The Jays’ schedule ain’t getting any easier, but at least the confines are friendlier. Toronto heads home to play their home opener against the Boston Red Sox. Home Runs: G. Zaun BASERUNNING SB: A. Rios (1) , V. Wells (1) OF assists: 1 (Wells(Molina at home)) |

The Jays locked up two of their best young players today, signing Alex Rios and Aaron Hill to long-term deals. Rios, who has two remaining arbitration seasons, will get $64 U.S. for 6 years, through the 2014 season. According to the Globe & Mail , the deal also includes a $13.5 million option for 2015, but it doesn’t say whose. The Blue Jays official site doesn’t mention the option. Rios’ deal will start in 2009.
Hill, who has 3 arbitration seasons remaining after this year and is due to make near the minimum this season, will get $12 million over 4 years, but his deal starts now and so takes him right to free agency. The Blue Jays lock up two good young players for their prime seasons at a reasonable cost. oo Gm 4 Boston 2 Toronto 4 Toronto pitcher Shaun Marcum got the win. He's now 1-0. Lyle Overbay drove in one run for Toronto. The 31-year old first baseman had a key at-bat in the bottom of the fourth. With one out and runners on 1st and 3rd, he broke a 1-1 tie with a run-scoring sacrifice fly off Tim Wakefield. It was his 4th RBI of the season. Overbay attributed the win to "everyone pulling their weight." Home Runs: G. Zaun Attendance: 50387 The Jays won their home opener last night in their throwback powder blues behind some great pitching from Shaun Marcum, a timely assist from the pen, and some good hitting. oo Gm 5 Boston 1 Toronto 4 Jesse Litsch struggled a little with control and needed to be bailed out by sharp defense, but in the end it was the Jays that came out on top as they jumped all over Buchholz. Picking up the save was 30-year old left-handed pitcher Brian Tallet. Toronto shortstop David Eckstein contributed a timely at-bat in the bottom of the fourth. With two down, he hit a fastball to right-center field for a run-scoring single. It was his 6th hit of the season and put the Blue Jays ahead, 3-1. "Jesse's stuff looked really, really crisp," said Frank Weatherbe, the Blue Jays manager. BASERUNNING SB: A. Rios (2) , G. Zaun (1) FIELDING Double Plays: 4 OF assists: 1 (Wells(Crisp at home)) Attendance: 50248 oo Gm 6 Boston 0 Toronto 2 Roy Halladay was the X factor. The Toronto right-hander spearheaded the 2-0 win. Oakland 5 Toronto 6 Toronto reliever Brian Tallet snagged the win, upping his record to 1-0. Had Aaron Hill not delivered a key base hit in the bottom of the eighth, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and the bases loaded, Hill hit a run-scoring single. That made the score 5-4, in favor of the Blue Jays. "We'll kick back tonight, then get set for the next one," Hill said. Attendance: 36366 00 Gm 8 Oakland 2 Toronto 3 The Toronto Blue Jays faced a tough opponent in Oakland pitcher Greg Smith, but did just enough to pull out the victory at SkyDome by a final score of 3-2. The win belonged to Jeremy Accardo in relief. His record improves to 1-0. At 7-1, the Blue Jays have played well so far. Lyle Overbay was the walk-off hero for Toronto. With the game tied in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Blue Jays first baseman hit a dramatic run-scoring single to send the teams home. "We'll take some time to unwind," said Overbay, "and then get after it again." Triples: A. Rios BASERUNNING SB: V. Wells (3) , A. Hill 2 (2) Attendance: 40956 oo Gm 9 Oakland 7 Toronto 5 Well after the debacle that was yesterday’s loss and just an awful series against Oakland, the Jays leave Toronto and head down to Arlington, where they always seem to struggle, to take on the Texas Rangers in a 3-game series. Yesterday’s game was just unbearable. In other Jays news, B.J. Ryan made his last rehab start at Dunedin and packed his bags for Syracuse. I’d expect to see him up with the Jays sometime next week, assuming all goes well. In injury news, Scott Rolen had successful surgery to remove the pin from his finger, and expects to be cleared to start hitting off a tee any day now. The Jays could definitely use Rolen back. Hit by Pitch: A. Hill BASERUNNING SB: D. Eckstein (2) , S. Stewart (1) , V. Wells (4) FIELDING Double Plays: 2 Attendance: 38508 |

Toronto 8 Texas 2 Yesterday’s loss the Jays leave Toronto and head down to Arlington, where they always seem to struggle, to take on the Texas Rangers in a 3-game series. Doing his part was center fielder Vernon Wells, who was 2-3 with a double and 2 walks, while scoring 2 and driving in 2. Jesse Litsch got credit for the win, improving to 2-0. He allowed 2 runs on 7 hits in 5 innings. Toronto is off to a hot start at 8-2. Toronto used the timely hitting of Gregg Zaun to seize the win. The catcher stroked a 2-run single in the top of the seventh inning to put the Blue Jays on top, 5-2. It was his only hit in 4 at-bats, but it was a game-changer. "Solid game, solid win tonight," said a smiling Wells. News () B.J. Ryan made his last rehab start at Dunedin and packed his bags for Syracuse. () Scott Rolen had successful surgery to remove the pin from his finger, and expects to be cleared to start hitting off a tee any day now oo Gm 11 Toronto 6 Texas 3 Behind an incredibly strong effort from Doc Halladay, some timely hitting, and several defensive miscues by the Rangers infield. Roy Halladay, who is a four-time All-Star, propelled his team to victory over the Texas Rangers. The save went to Brian Tallet, number 2 for him. The Blue Jays, now 9-2, have been playing some good baseball. Vernon Wells, who is a two-time All-Star, helped out the Toronto cause in the top of the fourth inning with a run-scoring hit-by-pitch. For the game, the center fielder drove in one run. Toronto manager Frank Weatherbe was pleased with the team's effort. "It was just a good, gutsy performance by everybody," he said. Newcomer Joe Inglett acquitted himself reasonably well. Team LOB: 12 BASERUNNING SB: A. Rios (3) oo Gm 12 Toronto 4 Texas 1 Toronto Blue Jays starter A.J. Burnett turned in an exceptional performance against the Texas Rangers at Ameriquest Field in Arlington. Burnett yielded 1 run over 6 innings to notch the win. He scattered 4 hits, walked 0, and struck out 4. His record improves to 1-1. B.J. Ryan closed it out for Toronto, earning his 1st save. Toronto used the hitting of Shannon Stewart to pick up the win. The left fielder clubbed a 2-run home run in the top of the second inning to put the Blue Jays on top, 4-0. For the game, Stewart had 1 home run and 1 single in 3 at-bats. "We'll take some time to unwind," said Stewart, "and then get after it again." The Jays are feeling pretty good after our sweep of the Rangers, in Arlington, since that hasn’t happened in 23 years. And it’s always good to see Doc leave Texas with his leg in one piece and not clutching his midsection. BATTING Home Runs: S. Stewart Team LOB: 7 BASERUNNING SB: S. Stewart (2) , J. Inglett (1) |
