Marc Gannon, the Arm Cannon

January 1, 2041: Continental Independent Baseball League Allocation Draft

Over 1,100 players will be selected in this allocation draft to fill the rosters of 40 CIBL teams for the league's inaugural season, but Marc Gannon knows he's a highly touted prospect and should be selected rather early. So, as team after team after team skips over him, opting to build their rosters around known quantities, Marc starts to sink a little in his chair.

OSA Scouting Report on Marc Gannon: Marc Gannon is a 22-year-old right handed pitcher. When he is fully developed, his repertoire should include a devastating fastball, a curveball with depth, an above average splitter, a solid slider, and a fringy circle change. He has the type of stuff that will miss bats combined with advanced control that should limit the free passes he issues. Gannon has a golden arm and should be a top of the rotation pitcher.

15 of the first 21 picks are starting pitchers not named Marc Gannon. He continues to sit there in the Grand Ballroom of the Bellagio in Las Vegas, the overhead lights starting to burn through him, waiting to hear which team is willing to take a chance on him.

A few teams take infielders, but then Calgary takes 24-year-old German Gonzales at 26 and, for the first time, Marc's actually offended; that should have been him.

Then Columbus takes a pitcher at 27. So does Jacksonville at 28, and Charlotte at 30, and Savannah at 32, and Spokane at 33, and Birmingham at 36, and the hosts Las Vegas at 37, another 24-year-old in Carlos Valadez, whom Marc is certain he is better than.

Then Charleston takes another starter at 38.

Jon Ptaszynski, Billings General Manager: With the 39th overall pick in the 2041 CIBL Allocation Draft, the Billings Geotherms are proud to select starting pitcher Marc Gannon.

Tom Bautista, Analyst, ESPN: Well, there you have it. We had been wondering if Gannon would go in the first round or not. The 22-year-old pitcher, he'll be 23 in April, goes to Big Sky Country in the penultimate pick of the first round. From what we've seen of him, he's got a rocket for an arm, but the jury is still out to see if he'll reach his potential as he's still so young. Billings might be taking a risk here, making a selection for the future instead of the present with their first round selection.

Phillip Fletcher, Gannon's high school coach: The day he showed up the summer before his senior year of high school, we didn't know what to think. His parents had just written "Arm Cannon" on the entry form for his name. Like he didn't have a name, that they could only describe characteristics. They said they moved here from Norway, just outside of Oslo. Seemed shady. Probably government stuff. I didn't ask too many questions because that Arm Cannon won us a lot of baseball games.

So, the question is, can Marc Gannon thrive and survive in the spotlight before people find out... he's actually a robot...

A robot? Like the twilight zone episode? He was a great pitcher but he drove the manager a little crazy & for some reason him being a robot was a pretty big problem... I don't remember the details but I'm referring to the original The Twilight Zone series.
