The Figment Hockey News
![]() Welcome to The Figment Hockey News This will be the home of the Dynasty Report topic covering the latest online league addition to the Figment Universe. What is the Figment Universe you might ask? It is the creation of the Legendsport, who runs our online leagues and is brought to life through his efforts and those of our great collection of online General Managers. The Figment Universe is a fictional multi-sport collection of leagues run in a historical environment. By that I mean that all events and people outside of sports are real but everything within sports - specifically the leagues, teams and players are fictional. As I write this we are presently in November of 1946, so Truman is the President, the United Nations is now a reality but facing challenges while World War II has been over for a year. That means thousands of professional athletes, including hundreds of big league ballplayers, who sacrificed from 1 to 4 years of their sporting careers for the war effort have returned home. They will usher in a new golden era of sports and the Figment Universe will reflect that. We presently have two online leagues: Figment Baseball which contains 16 major league teams divided equally into the Federal and Continental Associations and have just completed the 1946 World Championship Series - a thrilling seven game set beween the New York Stars and Washington Eagles. The sport can trace it's beginnings back to 1876 when legendsport began his pre-play. At the conclusion of the 1925 season the online portion of the game began with 16 human General Managers, more than half of whom each continue to run a team 22 years later. Now hockey is joining in on the fun as a pre-play from 1907 until present day (November 1946) has been completed and the 7 teams of North American Hockey Conference (NAHC) have human General Managers and are about to create Figment history. Within the next year a professional basketball league, and some point in the coming seasons a professional football, each as an online league with human GM's will be added as well. But that is not to say that football and basketball do not exist in the Figment Universe today. They are already in the 'pre-play' phase and boxing also exists in our universe. To recap we have the following sports and all are documented in our weekly newsletter -which recently started it's 11th season of regular coverage on a weekly basis. It is in the OOTP dynasty form and will touch on hockey going forward but that report, called "This Week in Figment Baseball" will just cover the basics of the hockey world. The much more detailed coverage of the online NAHC will be here in the FHM dynasty section. The sports leagues in the Figment universe are
The great thing about these leagues is they do not exist in a vacuum. They all interact together with a believable number of cross-over athletes who play more than one sport such as Del Thomas -the star quarterback for the Boston Americans football team who also spent some time playing baseball for the St Louis Pioneers. There are brother combinations like the Cleaves boys, the Lightbody's or the first family of Figment Sports the Barrell's - a family so famous they have an entire dynasty thread dedicated to them. There are fathers and son, grandfathers and grandsons both on the playing field and in the owners office and former high school teammates exceling in different sports. Real world events impact our leagues such as WWII as described earlier. Everything outside of sports is real. Our sports world is fictional but based on real events with an emphasis on believability so our teams as of 1945 were east of the Mississippi and based in larger metropolitan centers but westward expansion has happened in rival baseball and football leagues and is destined to occur in FABL and the AFA at some point. Even the colleges are entirely fictional, but on close inspection if you have a favourite school in the real world you will likely identify a similar one to root for here. The real world gives us Duke and North Carolina -we have the Carolina Poly Cardinals and the North Carolina Tech Techters. They have Michigan and Ohio State. We have the Detroit City College Knights and the Central Ohio Aviators. Our west coast powers presently are Los Angeles based schools Coastal California Dolphins and the City College of Los Angeles (or CCLA) Coyotes. Same for the pro sports where we have the New York Gothams as the team many love to hate in baseball. The Detroit Maroons, Boston Americans and Chicago Wildcats are well known in professional football and hockey gives us the Toronto Dukes and Montreal Valiants. So I am sure by now you are hooked on following this dynasty, and catching up on multi-sport one linked above a few times on the OOTP boards but your real question is likely "How do I join and become part of all this?" Just send a private message to Legendsport on these boards or visit the Figment Universe website. We may have an opening or two at the time of this writing in the upstart Great Western Baseball League. Hockey is presently full but there is always room on the waiting list and who knows - if there is enough interest and the timing is right- there is nothing to say a rival WHA-type league could not start up in hockey much earlier than it did in real life or expansion could also come early to the NAHC. And you can keep following the exploits of the league here as the 1945-46 NAHC season is about to begin.

November 11, 1946 NAHC preseason begins
![]() NOVEMBER 11, 1946 NAHA PRESEASON UNDERWAY ![]() The Dukes took out their frustrations on Detroit and New York, beating each by identical 4-1 scores last week. Friday night in Toronto Laurel Albers had a goal and an assist while Gordie Broadway made 24 saves in the win over the Motors. Last night after the train ride Saturday to New York the Dukes proved bad luck for the Shamrocks in a 4-1 win led by a pair ofBobbie Sauer goals and three helpers from Syl Beam. New York, Brooklyn, Chicago and Montreal each finished the opening weekend 1-1 with only the Detroit Motors dropping a pair of games. After falling to Toronto on Friday the Motors were upended by lowly Brooklyn at the Thompson Arena by a 3-1 count. Eagles rookie Val Mangione, who spent the past 7 seasons in the minor league Hockey Association of America, recently joined the Eagles on a tryout and had a goal and an assist in his NAHL preseason debut. The Eagles were woeful a year ago, winning just twice and tying 5 of their 48 games. NAHC PRESEASON RESULTS FRIDAY NOVEMBER 8 Detroit 1 at Toronto 4 New York 1 at Brooklyn 0 Chicago 2 at Montreal 1 SUNDAY NOVEMBER 10 Toronto 4 at New York 1 Montreal 2 at Chicago 1 Brooklyn 3 at Detroit 1 The only team not to see action yet is the defending champion Boston Bees who will play the first of their three preseason contests tonight at Denny Arena against the visiting Brooklyn Eagles. Boston ended the Toronto Dukes two year hold on the Challenge Cup by claiming the chalice for the fourth time in the past six years. Last season ended in bitter disappointment for the Dukes after they finished with the league's best record only to be swept three-straight by the Montreal Valiants in the opening round of the playoffs. The Valiants would fall in the best-of-seven final 4 games to two to Boston after the Bees had little trouble disposing of the third place Chicago Packers in the other semi-final. Here is a quick look back at the final standings from last season Code:

Hockey updates will continue shortly but the league had a bit of a hiccup as we deal with a learning curve of all league members being new to FHM online play and many completely new to FHM. It is quite obvious that FHM is nowhere near as easy or intuitive to play or commissioner as an online league - that much is crystal clear- but we are getting there. However, after discovering some contract-related issues left for us by the AI GMs we replaced at the beginning of November, the league members felt it was best to roll back a few months to July 1,1946 to restart the league and push forward quickly to catch up with the other sports in our universe.
I will replace the above posts with new ones as we move forward at a quick pace to get back in step with the other sports. In the meantime, if you want to follow along with the other sports, particularly our pro and college football leagues that are nearing the end of their seasons you can do so here in the OOTP dynasty section.

Reboot - July 7, 1946
Okay, let's try again and see if the league file will survive in a reboot. We rolled back to July 1, 1946 and taking over as an online league from there. Here is the new first edition of The Figment Hockey News
![]() JULY 7,1946 EAGLES LOOK FOR IMPROVEMENT IN FALL The Brooklyn Eagles have loog been the NAHC's doormat but fourth year coach Dusty Lamour is hoping that is about to change. The Eagles have won just 8 games in the last three seasons combined including a dismal 2-41-5 campaign a year ago but recent signings give the club some optimism about next season. The Eagles selected 19 year old right winger Jamie Wilson first overall in yesterday's NAHC rookie draft and the club is hopeful that the Winnipeg native can step right into the lineup when the season opens in November. Wilson has already had a ful season of pro hockey, notching 5 goals and 9 points in 45 games with the Philadelphia Rascals of the Hockey Association of America -the top minor league loop. Wilson is far from the only newcomer expected to add some offense in Brooklyn next season. The Eagles signed a trio of players from the Great Western Hockey League led by 23 year old center/left wing Quinton Pollack. The Saskatchewan native was selected first overall by the Eagles in the 1942 draft but after a couple of seasons in the HAA he elected to head out west and play for the Tacome Lions instead of joining a struggling Brooklyn club. He helped the Lions to back-to-back GWHL titles and led that loop in goals, assists and points last season with a 28-43-71 showing in 48 games. The Eagles followed that up with the acquisition of wingers Hank Walsh and Sammy Coates from Vancouver. The youngsters, aged 21 and 22, combined for 21 goals and 52 points for the Bears last season. To finish off their summer signing frenzy, Brooklyn also inked 22 year old center Ian Doyle, who had 33 points for the Syracuse Lancers of the HAA last season. Doyle was the Eagles first overall selection in the 1943 NAHC draft. *** Packers and Motors Busy Signing *** Brooklyn was not the only club to make a splash in the signing department last week as the Chicago Packers and Detroit Motors each added two players. Chicago signed a pair of centers led by Jarrett McGlynn, a 24-year-old Calgary native who they originally drafted in the 5th round in 1941. McGlynn is a five-year veteran of the GWHL and combined with the great Tommy Burns and another new signing in Ed Delarue gives the Packers arguably the best trio of centers in the league. Detroit recognized a need to upgrade its blueline and the Motors inked Bryant Williams and Joe Todd to join star defenseman Shel Herron as an outstanding trio. Williams, 27, and the 24 year old Tood were both released recenly by the Toronto Dukes. Here is a look at the top players (2.5 star and above) on each of the NAHC teams. Newcomers to a club are noted in red ink. ![]() DRAFT RECAP As mentioned above the Brooklyn Eagles selected right winger Jamie Wilson from Winnipeg first overall. Here is a quick biography of the rest of the first round selections. 2nd- New York Shamrocks: Joe Martin LW/RW - A Montreal native, Martin was acquired last season by the Syracuse Lancers of the HAA and played in 38 games for the club, tallying 3 goals and 11 points against professional competition. 3rd - Detroit Motors: Bobo Davis C -Davis was listed number one in the mock draft and while scouts agree he is outstanding upside, it is also a consensus he may need a fair bit of time to reach it. Born in Toronto, Davis, like most of the top prospects, elected to play minor pro as a 19 year old (18 is the minimum age in the minor leagues compared to 20 in the NAHC) but he played sparingly for the Portland Ports of the GWL, scoring 3 goals in 29 games. 4th - Montreal Valiants: John McDonald D -The Halifax native may be the most NAHC ready player in the draft but he does not turn 20 until March so he may have to spend another season in the minors. He played in 13 games for the Rochester Robins as an 18 year old and if the Valiants sign him he will likely play a key role on their Syracuse Lancers farm club. 5th - Chicago Packers: Phil Stukus D -After signing a number of free agent forwards the Packers went for blueline help with their first round draft pick. Stukus is from Ottawa and was listed #2 behind only Bobo Davis on the OSA mock draft. He has a high upside but may need a year in the minors. Unlike the four picks ahead of him, Stukus remained in Ontario and played junior hockey last season instead of joining a minor pro club. 6th - Boston Bees: George Anderson C/LW -The Calgary born Anderson played one game of minor pro for the Cleveland Eries last season before he felt homesick and returned to western Canada to play junior. The Bees have the luxury of plenty of depth up front so they will likely ease Anderson into pro hockey with a season in Springfield. 7th - Toronto Dukes: Tim Brooks D -The London, Ontario native is young -he does not turn 20 until March 1st- and will likely benefit from a year or perhaps more in the minors although the Dukes cut ties with some of their defenseman over the past month and may have some depth concerns on the blueline. LOOKING BACK Here is a quick look back at the final standings and leaders in the NAHC last season. Code:

November 2, 1946 Preseason complete
![]() NOVEMBER 2, 1946 NAHC SEASON PREVIEW The 1946-47 NAHC season gets underway this evening with the Toronto Dukes heading to New York to face the Shamrocks marking the start of the annual 48 game campaign for the loop's seven clubs. The league scouting service predicts when the ice chips have all landed next April the Chicago Packers will hoist the Challenge Cup for the first time in franchise history. The Packers, reached the finals in 1930-31 for the only time in their history. OSA, the league scouting service feels the Burns brothers -Tommy and Wes- will carry Chicago to the top with Toronto and Boston also in the mix. The service also pegs Tommy Burns as the league scoring leader with Brooklyn's Quinton Pollack and Wilbur Chandler of Boston in the running while the race for best defenseman will be between New York's Bert McCalley and a pair of Detroit Motors in Shel Harron and newcomer Bryant Williams. Gordie Broadway of Toronto gets the preseason nod as top goaltender with Montreal's Millard Touhey and Tom Brockers of Brooklyn also garnering interest. TWIFB's 1946-47 predicted order of finish for the NAHC looks like this 1- TORONTO DUKES: The Dukes had the best regular season record in the NAHC a year ago but bowed out in the first round of the playoffs after being swept by fourth place Montreal. Toronto had won the two previous Challenge Cups and will go as far as Gordie Broadway -the best goaltender in the NAHC- will take them. Broadway, won the Juneau Award a year ago as the top netminder and the 32 year old has backstopped the Dukes to three Cups in his career. For those worried he may start to show his age, Broadway posted the lowest goals against average and highest save percentage of his career last season. Toronto also has plenty of offense led by the big line of Bobbie Sauer (22-30-52) between Herb Burdette (13-17-30) and Les Carlson (17-30-47) plus a supporting cast that includes Laurel Albers (15-25-40) and Syl Beam (13-12-25). If there is a weakspot in Toronto it might be on the blueline although towering 25 year old JC Martel, who was acquired from Montreal over the summer, might help fill that gap along with a little more maturity out of second year Duke Frank Featherstone (6-11-17) 2- MONTREAL VALIANTS: The Valians just nosed out Detroit for the final playoff spot before pulling off a major upset of Toronto in the semi-finals. They will now need to prove that was not a fluke and will try to advance one step further in the upcoming season with a goal of claiming their first Challenge Cup since 1928. Montreal may have the best collection of forwards in the NAHC -a balanced unit with depth led by the trio of Clarence Skinner (23-27-50), Doug Lynch (16-24-40) and 23 year old Brett Lanceleve (14-18-32), who won the McLeod Trohy as top newcomer a year ago. The Valiants may well have a second straight rookie of the year winner if Adam Sandford can live up to the potential he showed as a minor leaguer in Pittsburgh a year ago. 30 year old Millard Touhey is a solid, veteran goaltender and he is protected by a pretty decent defense headed by veteran Leo Bernard (6-13-19). 3- CHICAGO PACKERS: The Packers have two outstanding goaltenders and possibly the best player in the league in 26 year old center Tommy Burns (28-29-57), who teams up nicely with his winger and older brother Wes Burns (18-32-50) to make a very dangerous offensive combination. Add in right winger Marty Mahoney (12-23-35) and a pair of promising newcomers in centers Jarrett McGlynn and Ed Delarue and the Packers have address concerns regarding a lack of depth upfront. Jerry Finch (3-10-13) and 22 year old second year man Pete Moreau (8-6-14) are a solid number one D-pair and goaltender Norm Hanson won the job between the pipes in a 3-way battle a year ago but may be pushed by promising rookie Michael Cleghorn, who was signed away from the minor league Philadelphia Rascals. 4- BOSTON BEES: Last season's Challenge Cup win was a bit of a surprise but the city of Boston, with 4 Cups since 1940-41 and 6 overall is used to supporting a winner. The local baseball Minutemen and football Americans certainly add to the winning tradition in New England. The offense has plenty of talent led by reigning NAHC scoring champ Jim Morey (27-34-61), Tommy Hart (10-30-40) and hopefully a full season out of 28 year old Wilbur Chandler (14-12-26). The 3-time winner of the McDaniels Trophy as league MVP missed half of last season with an arm injury. As good as the Boston offense is the defense might be even better with three rearguards expected to be among the top players in the loop. They are veterans Len Bentley (7-13-20) and Willis Beane (9-23-32) and sophomore Conn Cundifff (6-6-12), a 23 year old who made his NAHC debut with the Bees last season. Pierre Melancon (25-11-4, 2.03) returns between the pipes. 5- BROOKLYN EAGLES: It has been an awful time for the Eagles ever since their move from New York City and a 37-214-37 record over the past six years has not endeared them to Brooklyn fans. The Eagles hit rock bottom a year ago when they won just 2 of 48 games but there is reason for optimism this time around. The Eagles revamped their offense -which was the worst in the league a year ago- with the addition of a pair of rookie pivots in Quinton Pollack and Ian Doyle. Pollack had a tremendous camp scoring 7 goals in 7 games and may step in and be one of the top scorers in the league at age 23 after smashing the Great Western Hockey League points record a season ago with 28 goals and 71 points in 48 games for the Tacoma Lions. The 22 year old Doyle is also an offensive threat with 33 points for Syracuse of the Hockey Association of America a year ago. There is still a shortage of depth with the Eagles but if veteran goaltender Tom Brockers, who won 4 Juneau Awards during his time in Boston, can stand tall and hold them in games the Eagles may just surprise some teams. 6- DETROIT MOTORS: For the second straight season the Motors narrowly missed the playoffs and we have a feeling that trend might continue. 23 year old third-year man Henri Chasse (20-15-2, 2.96) is a solid goaltender and the club has plenty of talent on the blueline but there are worries the Motors will lack offensive punch. Veteran Shel Herron (6-25-31) is one of the best defenders in the league and there are a pair of veteran newcomers who came over from Toronto to join him on the blueline in 27 year old Bryant Williams (3-17-20) and 25 year old Joe Todd (9-11-20). Up front the Motors hope first round draft pick Bobo Davis can eventually become their scoring leader but until then the forward crop looks thin. 7- NEW YORK SHAMROCKS: The Shamrocks may end up battling it out with Detroit (and possibly Brooklyn) for last place so it seems unlikely their 4 year playoff drought will come to an end this March. 28 year old center Orval Cabbell (10-25-35) is as steady as they come and Bert McCalley (5-18-23) provides veteran leadership on the blueline but depth looks like a potential issue. If there is a player to watch for a breakout year it might well be 25 year old winger Tommy Brecia (17-13-30). Last year's breakout star was goaltender Etienne Tremblay (14-22-8, 2.33) and the Shamrocks will need another step forward from the 24 year old this season. Kurt Stone has gone 99-138-51 over the past six seasons as head coach and a slow start this year might cause the Shamrocks to make a change behind the bench. Here is a look at the top ten players in the game according to the league scouting service. Code:

November 18, 1946
note- the online league is running 2-week sims at the moment to catch up with the others sports in our universe.
![]() NOVEMBER 18, 1946 MOTORS FIRING ON ALL CYLINDERS The Detroit Motors are off to a surprisingly quick start through two weeks of North American Hockey Confederation play. The Motors missed the playoffs by a single point each of the past two seasons but lead the way in the early going with a 4-1-0 record good for a league best 8 points. Goaltender Henri Chasse, with a league low 2.40 goals against average and solid group of rearguards in front of him, is the reason for the hot start in the Motor City. The high-flying Chicago Packers sit in second place thanks as usual to their big line of the Burns brothers and Marty Mahoney. Tommy Burns is off to start that has thoughts of him threatening to rewrite the loop's record book with 6 goals and 14 points through just 5 games while his brother Wes sits third in league scoring with 9 points -one more than the final member of the troika Mahoney, who has 8 points. One player on the hot seat early is Montreal goaltender Millard Touhey. The 30 year old four-year veteran came into camp out of shape and has drawn the ire of Valiants coach Danny McLachlan for his subpar play. Touhey has a terrible 5.54 goals against average for the defending champs this season and gave up 15 goals in back to back losses in Chicago and Toronto. Speaking of Toronto, the Dukes have struggled on the road with 3 straight losses away from Dominion Gardens and they find themselves sitting at the bottom of the league with 4 losses already after losing just 9 games all of last season. Orval Cabbell -the Shamrocks star center- scored three times in the win with rookie winger Joe Martin -the 2nd overall pick in the draft- assisting on all three. NOVEMBER 3 Graham Comeau had a goal and an assist while Henri Chasse turned aside all twenty shots he faced as the Detroit Motors spoiled Brooklyn's home opener with a 2-0 victory. In a rematch of last spring's Challenge Cup Finals, the Montreal Valiants edged the Boston Bees 4-3 thanks to Ray Sclisizzi's third period goal. Veteran Joe Morey, who lit the lamp 27 times a year ago, scored twice in a losing cause for the Bees. NOVEMBER 7 Brooklyn won just two games all of last season but the Eagles doubled the Chicago Packers 6-3 to level their record at 1-1. Newly acquired forward Quinton Pollak was the big star of the day with a hat trick as part of a five-point night while another newcomer to the Eagles, 22 year old winger Sam Coates, had a goal and 3 assists. Chicago outshot the Eagles 44-32 but Tom Brockers made some key saves for Brooklyn. NOVEMBER 9 Dave Bradley had a goal and two assists to lead Detroit to their second straight victory, a 5-3 win over the visiting Toronto Dukes, who lose for the second straight game. NOVEMBER 10 An overnight train ride from Detroit to New York did nothing to slow down the Motors, who beat the Shamrocks 5-3 for their third straight victory. Elsewhere, it was a rout in Chicago as the Packers blasted the Montreal Valiants 8-2 behind a huge evening from the Packers big line. Tommy Burns had 3 goals and an assist while his brother Wes had a goal and 2 helpers with right winger Marty Mahoney chipping in with a goal and 3 assists. NOVEMBER 12 Tommy Burns had a two point night but it was not enough as his Packers fell 4-2 in Boston. Joe Morey, who tallied twice in the Bees opener, added another goal and an assist in this one. NOVEMBER 14 Another awful night for Valiants goaltender Millard Touhey. After giving up 8 to Chicago four nights earlier he was shelled for 7 goals on 22 shots and was pulled in the second period as Toronto thumped Montreal 8-2. Bobbie Sauer led the Dukes attack with 5 points to help Toronto snap its two game losing streak to start the season. The score in Chicago was even more lobsided as the Packers hammered Brooklyn 9-0. 25 year old rookie Jarrett McGlynn -who was the top scorer in the Great Western Hockey League a season ago- notched his first two NAHC goals in the victory. It must have been an off night for Tommy Burns, as the Packer star 'only' managed 3 points from the 9 Chicago goals. NOVEMBER 16 Montreal settled down in the second half of the home and home with Toronto. Sophomore defenseman Cory Findlay got the game winner midway through the third period to lift the Valiants to a 3-2 win over the Toronto Dukes. In the other game on the slate the Detroit Motors improved to 4-0 with a 4-1 win over the visiting New York Shamrocks. Miles Barfield scored once and added two assists for the winners as Detroit outshot New York 35-18. NOVEMBER 17 For the first time this season there were six of the seven NAHC teams in action. Norm Hanson turned aside 32 of the 33 shots he faced to backstop Chicago to a 4-1 win over Montreal. The Valiants started second string goaltender Andy Backlund and the loss cannot be pinned on the 23 year old netminder, who faced a barrage with Chicago shooters firing 55 shots at his cage. Each of the other two games ended in 5-2 scores with Boston, behind a Tommy Hart hat trick, winning in Toronto to drop the Dukes to 1-4 on the year while Brooklyn defenseman Miles Norman had a 4-point night as Brooklyn equalled its win total from all of last year with their second victory, a 5-2 win over Detroit that snapped the Motors 4-game winning streak to start the season. THE WEEK AHEAD TUESDAY NOVEMBER 19 Boston at Detroit New York at Brooklyn THURSDAY NOVEMBER 21 Chicago at Boston Detroit at Montreal Brooklyn at Toronto SATURDAY NOVEMBER 23 Montreal at Brooklyn New York at Boston Toronto at Chicago SUNDAY NOVEMBER 24 Chicago at Toronto Detroit at Boston Brooklyn at Montreal ![]() NEWS FROM LOCAL PAPERS AROUND THE LEAGUE MELANCON EARLY SURPRISE FOR BEES -Boston is off to a 2-1 start and while goaltending is not a strength of the club, it has not disappointed so far. Pierre Mélançon is in the middle of the pack in goals against average (2.68) in the season's first two weeks and the big concern for Boston coming into the season is the lack of experience between the pipes. There is potential here with Mélançon, but this might be his one year to show Bees management what he can do at the NAHC level. Oscar James has been hailed potentially as the best netminder in the HAA and he will spend the season in Cleveland. James is NAHC ready and Mélançon wants to give the powers that be a lot to think about. - Finn LeBec / Boston Globe. EAGLES SOARING -Has the tide finally turned in Brooklyn? After winning just 17 games combined over the past 4 seasons and only two a year ago the new look Eagles won two games in the first two weeks of this season. There is finally some offense with the western trio of Quinton Pollack, Steve Coates and Hank Walsh combining for 13 points in their first four games since joining the NAHC from the coast loop. More good news came just after the season started with word that second round draft pick Robert Sharpley, a big strong two-way defenseman who had 35 points as a 19 year old in Rochester a year ago, agreed to a contract and was in the lineup last week. Sharpley was steady and had two assists and shows great promise going forward. -Jimmy Woods / Brooklyn Daily Eagle PACKERS WILL GO AS FAR AS BIG THREE WILL CARRY THEM -The Detroit Motors may have the most points so far, but nothing in the early goings can compare to the Chicago Packers offense. No other team has scored at least 20 goals, while the Burns led Packers have placed 26 pucks into the back of the net. Superstar center Tommy Burns is showing everyone why he's the best skater in the NAHC, scoring 6 goals and assisting on 8 goals in 5 games, and his 12 +/- is already higher then his mark from last season. He leads all skaters in goals, assists, points (14), shots (29), and +/-, but he's not doing it all on his own. Older brother Wes has 4 goals, 5 assists, and 9 points, all good for third in the league. The last third of the Packers front line, Marty Mahoney, has assisted on more goals (6) then any non-Packer and his 8 points are fifth in the league. It will be tough to keep up this torrid pace all season, but it looks like NAHC defenses will have their hands full trying to keep these three off the scoresheet. It is another great start for the veteran trio of Tommy Burns, Wes Burns and Marty Mahoney but that really comes as no surprise as Tommy, despite being just 26, has centered his 30 year old brother and the 25 year old Mahoney for the past six seasons and they have combined for 268 goals during that span. This season, the trio already ranks 1-2-3 in assists and top five in points. Tommy looks to be a generational guy already at the tender age of 26. Brother attacks are common in the Windy City of late and it is fitting that while the Cougars have the pitching Jones brothers the Packers have the Burns brothers. There should be a lot of scoring in Chicago this season. - Archie Irwin / Chicago Daily News TROUBLE IN DETROIT? - Despite a surprising start to the season in which they won four of their first five games, it appears not all is well in the Motors garage. It seems that Bobo Davis, the Toronto native taken 3rd overall by Detroit in the draft, is making waves in the clubhouse and several of his teammates are already sick of his antics. At this point, Motors coach Mark Moore seems willing to let the situation play out and hopefully resolve itself. If it doesn't sort itself out, don't be surprised if Davis is sent down to Buffalo to see if that will humble the outspoken youngster. Davis has performed well on the ice, with 4 assists and seeing a regular shift in his first five games. -Dan Urbanski / Detroit Times. SHAMROCKS NEED SOME PUCK LUCK ON ROAD - The New York Shamrocks have not won the Challenge Cup since the spring of 1932 when they beat the cross-town Eagles in the Battle of New York. Many have them tabbed for the basement this season, a spot typically reserved for the woeful Brooklyn Eagles. A good start is essential to return the club to the playoffs for the first since the 41-42 campaign and in that regard the schedule makers did the Shamrocks no favours. After starting with a split of two games at Bigsby Garden the Greenshirts finish the month with 5 of 6 games on the road. That stretch started with a 4-1 loss in Detroit and continues tomorrow with a short hop to Prescott Arena for a meeting with the suddenly relevant Eagles -New York World Telegram DEFENSIVE ZONE WORRIES IN MONTREAL - The Valiants knew coming into the season that the blue line was a potential weakness. It's played out that way so far. The highest game rating among defencemen through 5 games belongs to 23-year-old rookie Jake Shires (65). Leo Bernard, who should be the defensive leader, is at 61. Bernard has 15 shots with no goals, but he has blocked 9 shots and has 7 takeaways. Though the big concern after two weeks is, as mentioned, the goaltending. Bad goaltending with a subpar defense will make for a long winter in Montreal. Touhey is a vet and I fully expect him to bounce back (he was quite impressive in the opening night win against Boston). -The Montreal Star DUKES STUMBLE EARLY - The Toronto Dukes are off to a terrible start with just one win in their first five contests. Golatender Gordie Broadway seems to be fighting the puck with a 4.70 GAA .833 Save% in 4 starts. Both of those things are unusual at Dominion Gardens as the Dukes have averaged 32 wins a season over the past three years -two of which ended in Challenge Cup parades through the streets of Toronto. Meanwhile Broadway is the modern day NAHC leader in goaltender wins and boasts a 1.88 career goals against average. He is also the reigning Juneau Award winner as top netminder. - Toronto Mail & Emipre. OTHER HEADLINES THIS WEEK

December 2, 1946
We have a rare Saturday sim for our online hockey league -normal sims in all sports are daily Monday to Friday- but we are still working on catching up to the rest of the Figment Universe after the restart in the hockey league. We are a both behind as the rest of Figment is ringing in the New Year on the weekend with the first sim of January 1947 set for Monday.
![]() DECEMBER 2, 1946 BEES BUZZ TO TOP OF NAHC The Boston Bees are no strangers to the top of the NAHC standings. With 4 Challenge Cup wins in the past six seasons including last year's title over Montreal, the Bees are used to winning and so far this season has been no different. Boston dropped it's season opener to Montreal by a 4-3 score on November 3 but then went on a 6 game winning streak before the Valiants improved to 2-0 on the season against Boston with a 3-1 win last Tuesday. The Bees rebounded yesterday with a 4-3 win over Brooklyn that improved their record to 7-2-0 and good for a 2 point lead on a trio of teams in Chicago, Detroit and of course the Valiants. The Boston offense has been solid, led once again by the top line of Tommy Hart (8-7-15), Wilbur Chandler (4-7-11) and young Jacob Gron (2-9-10), but that comes as no surprise. What has been a pleasant surprise is the showing of 20 year old Pierre Melancon in net. Melancon played 40 games for Boston a year ago and was very strong between the pipes in their Cup run but still there was some worry about his abilities. A strong defense led by Len Bentley, Willis Beane and Conn Cundiff certainly doesn't hurt but plenty of the credit for Boston's hot start must go to the young goaltender, who is 6-2-0 and sports an impressive 2.51 goals against average -best in the league among goalies with at least 4 games played. ![]() Burns production has been big for the Packers, as they currently sit in 2nd place with 12 points (5-3-2). Burns' first line has been crucial to the teams' success, as brother Wes has 13 points, Marty Mahoney 12, and Tommy himself added an 18th point in the Packers 4-3 win over the Shamrocks to start December. The trio ranks 1st, 4th, and 5th in points, with third line center Ed Delarue 6th with 11. No other team has more then one player in the top 8, as the Packers have scored 9 more goals then the two next best teams, the first place Bees (14 PTS) and the Motors (12 PTS), who are tied with the Packers and reigning champion Montreal Valiants for second. Willis Beane was the star of the show for the Bees in the Motor City, scoring twice and adding an assist to key the victory as Boston scored two answered markers in the third period. In Brooklyn, Shamrocks rookie Joe Martin scored twice in the third period, including an empty-netter to seal the win and ruin a fine effort from Eagles netminder Tom Brockers, who had a 34 save performance. THURSDAY NOVEMBER 21 A busy Thursday evening with 3 games on the slate. Boston won for the third straight game as Tommy Hart, with a goal and an assist, led the Bees to a 4-2 win at Denny Arena over the visiting Chicago Packers, who suffered their second consecutive loss. Shel Herron's 3rd goal of the season, early in the third period, earned Detroit a 2-2 tie on the road in Montreal while in Toronto Larry Albers had two assists and Gordie Broadway made 22 saves as the Dukes beat Brooklyn 3-1. SATURDAY NOVEMBER 23 Tommy Hart had a goal and 2 helpers while defenseman Elmer Jernigan had a 2 point night as Boston beat New York 4-2 for the Bees fourth win in a row. In Chicago, Norm Hanson turned aside 31 shots while Marty Mahoney and Wes Burns each scored once and added an assist to pace Chicago to a 4-1 win over struggling Toronto. The third game was a display of strong goaltending from both Millard Touhey and Tom Brockers as Montreal and Brooklyn skated to a 1-1 draw. SUNDAY NOVEMBER 24 Another win for Boston as the Bees down Detroit 3-1 behind a pair of Wilbur Chandler goals and a 30 save effort from backup goaltender Francis Landry in his first start of the season. Ed Delarue had both Chicago goals in a 2-2 tie for the Packers in Toronto and Glen Whitley enjoyed a 3-point night to lead Montreal to a 5-3 win over Brooklyn in the back half of their home-and-home over the weekend. TUESDAY NOVEMBER 26 There were worries in Montreal early in the season after goaltender Millard Touhey reported to camp out of shape. Touhey was in peak form on this night as the Valiants ended Boston's 5 game winning streak with a 3-1 victory at the Montreal Arena. Touhey made 30 saves in the win as the Bees outshot Montreal 31-25. The other game saw the New York Shamrocks shade Toronto 3-2 at the Dominion Gardens. THURSDAY NOVEMBER 28 The battle of New York had the NAHC spotlight as the lone game saw the visiting Brooklyn Eagles drop the Shamrocks 4-2 at Bigsby Garden. Quinton Pollack, the Eagles 24-year old rookie signee who dominated the coast league last year, scored his league leading 7th goal in the game. FRIDAY NOVEMBER 29 Ed Delarue scored with 28 seconds remaining in the game to give the Chicago Packers a 3-3 tie with visiting Detroit in the only game on the schedule. Tommy Burns, who leads the league in points and was the league's most valuable player a year ago, scored once and assisted on the other two Chicago markers. SATURDAY NOVEMBER 30 Millard Touhey had another strong game in the Montreal crease, making 36 saves as the Valiants dumped New York 4-1. An Eddie Dallas powerplay goal 7 minutes into the third period secured a point for Brooklyn at home as the Eagles skated to a 2-2 tie with Toronto. Quinton Pollack had his 8th goal of the season and assited on Dallas' tying marker. SUNDAY DECEMBER 1 A 3-goal outburst in the third period allowed the Detroit Motors to snap a 5-game winless streak with a 6-4 victory over the Dukes in Toronto. Garrett Ferrar scored two of the Motors third period goals with Miles Barfield adding the final one. Boston's big line of Wilbur Chandler, Tommy Hart and Jacob Gron combined for six points to lead the Bees to a 4-3 win over Brooklyn while in New York, the visitng Chicago Packers extended their unbeaten streak to 4 games with a 4-3 win over the Shamrocks. It looked like the Packers were headed to a 3rd straight tie before Moose Vezina got the game winner -his first of the season- with 3:58 remaining in the contest. OTHER HEADLINES THIS WEEK

I am not the commissioner of the league so not certain but I assume it is a setting in league creation, and perhaps you can adjust it on July 1 each year.

December 16, 1946
Another weekend sim and we only need a couple more 2-week at a time sims and we will be caught up to the rest of the Figment Universe including our OOTP online league.
![]() DECEMBER 16 , 1946 REELING DUKES DEAL ALBERS The Toronto Dukes have made the first online league trade of the NAHC in hopes of turning around what has been a dismal start to the season. The Dukes, winless in 9 games and just 2-10-3 overall after leading the league with 70 points a year ago, hoped that sending second line center Laurel Albers to New York might shake the team out of its doldrums. In return the Shamrocks part with talented 23-year old rookie defenseman Philippe Dubois. Toronto hopes that Dubois, a raw but talented former second round pick, can pay immediate dividends and help shore up the Dukes porous defensive zone coverage. Veteran netminder Gordie Broadway, the Juneau Trophy winner last season, will be the first to admit he has not played well but he is also typically seeing close to 40 shots against a game this season. Dubois, who spent the previous three seasons out west with the Portland Ports, has 1 goal and 6 assists in 13 games with the Shamrocks. Albers looks like an ideal fit as the second line center in New York behind top gun Orval Cabbell. In his 7th season, Alberts matched his career high with 15 goals a year ago but has just 2 goals and 11 points thru 15 games this season. There were rumours that he was extremely unhappy in what has been a trouble Toronto locker room this season and he appears quite happy with the move. The Shamrocks, who have not made the playoff since 1942, are presently tied for 5th pace, five points back of Montreal which presently holds the 4th and final playoff berth. Code:

THURSDAY DECEMBER 5 Detroit goaltender Henri Chasse turned aside all 30 shots he faced from the normally high scoring Chicago Packers for his second shutout of the season as the Motors blanked the Packers 3-0. Detroit captain Miles Barfield had a goal and an assist. At Bigsby Garden, Orval Cabbell scored twice and added two assists while linemate Gil Corbeil chipped in 4 helpers to lead New York past the Montreal Valiants 5-1. SATURDAY DECEMBER 7 The Detroit Motors defense held Montreal to just 16 shots as the Motors downed the Valiants 3-1 while in Boston the Bees beat Gordie Broadway three times in the third period to top Toronto 4-1. Tommy Hart scored twice and added an assist for the winners while Broadway can't shoulder all of the blame as the Dukes were outshot 17-3 in the third period and 48-11 for the game. SUNDAY DECEMBER 8 The New York Shamrocks completely dominated the Detroit Motors at the Thompson Palladium, outshooting the locals 46-23 in a 6-0 shutout victory. Jocko Gregg led the way for the Greenshirts with his first two goals of the season while backup goaltender Ronnie Flanagan -in a rare start- blanked the team he spent two and a half seasons with before moving to New York in a mid-season deal a year ago. In the other game the Burns boys each had a goal and an assist to help visiting Chicago leave Denny Arena with a point following a 3-3 tie with the Boston Bees. TUESDAY DECEMBER 10 A defensive duel at Bigbsy Garden as Craig Simpson's first period goal -his 6th of the season- held up in Boston's 1-0 victory over the New York Shamrocks. Pierre Melancon stopped all 22 shots he faced for his first shutout of the season. THURSDAY DECEMBER 12 Norm Hanson had a 28 save shutout while Wes Burns, with his 9th of the season, Jarrett McGlynn and Moose Vezina scored in a 3-0 win for the Chicago Packers on home ice over the Brooklyn Eagles. Nothing seems to be going right for the Toronto Dukes, who played two strong periods and had the lead in Montreal before falling apart in the third. After being outshot 30-16 and outscored 3-1 in the opening 40 minutes the Valiants roared back with 4 third period goals, including 2 off the stick of Glen Whitley, to claim a 5-3 win over their Canadian rivals. FRIDAY DECEMBER 13 No superstitions on Friday the 13th for Henri Chasse as the red-hot Detroit Motors netminder made 28 saves to help his club blanked the New York Shamrocks 3-0 behind two-point evenings from Shel Herron and Vincent Arsenault. SATURDAY DECEMBER 14 Another game, another loss for the Toronto Dukes, who are doubled 6-3 in Chicago on this occasion. Chicago's big line of the Burns brothers and Marty Mahoney was held to just 1 goal but Jarrett McGlynn picked up the slack. The rookie enjoyed his second 4-point night of the season in the win. SUNDAY DECEMBER 15 Toronto salvaged a point from their home and home series with the Packers, earning a 5-5 tie at Dominion Gardens despite a hat trick from Chicago star Tommy Burns. Detroit and the Valiants also skated to a tie at the Montreal Arena. This one finished 1-1 as the Vals Glen Whitely and Motors Vincent Arsenault traded first period goals before netminders Millard Touhey and Henri Chasse took over. The final game of the night saw rookie ian Doyle score twice and add an assist to lead Brooklyn to a 4-3 triumph at Prescott Arena over the visiting New York Shamrocks. ![]() AROUND THE LEAGUE The Montreal Valiants will be without left winger Adam Sandford for the rest of the season after he suffered a foot injury against Detroit last night. The 23 year old was selected second overall by the Valiants in the 1942 draft and joined the club this season after five years with the minor league Pittsburgh Rovers. Sandford had 2 goals and 6 points in 14 games this season. If you are looking for a reason why the New York Shamrocks are struggling, look no further than special teams. The Greenshirts have converted on a league worst 17.2% of the power play opportunities and are dead last in penalty killing with just a 63.6% success rate. Top shorthanded unit belongs to the Valiants with only 2 power play goals surrendered and killing off over 90% of opponents power plays. Four of the clubs are tied for the most successful power play with Boston, Brooklyn, Chicago and Montreal all scoring at a 25% success rate with the man advantage. Tommy Burns of the Chicago Packers leads the league with 12 goals this season so it comes as little surprise Burns also leads the way in shots on goal with 73 so far. Number two on the list is Brooklyn rookie Quinton Pollack, who has fired 62 shots on net and has 9 goals. OTHER HEADLINES THIS WEEK

![]() DECEMBER 30 , 1946 DEFENSE LEADS DETROIT MOTORS TO TOP SPOT After missing the playoffs each of the past two seasons the Detroit Motors have taken over top spot in the North American Hockey Conference thanks to the best defense in the league. Led by the outstanding play of 23 year old goaltender Henri Chasse, who already has notched 4 shutouts, and veteran rearguard Shel Herron the Motors have surrendered the fewest goals against this season and at 26 points hold a 1 point lead on the defending champion Boston Bees. The defense-first attitude for Detroit has been one born out of necessity as the Motors lack the big-time offensive performer that most other teams seem to possess at least one of. Boston, for example, has a mighty first line led by Tommy Hart, Wilbur Chandler and Jacob Gron who have comined for 56 points this season as well as a strong season from second line winger Joe Morey, who is among the league leaders with 18 points. There is some cause for concern in Boston as Chandler has gone 5 games without a point and Gron -the 23 year old second year star with 21 points in 19 games- hurt his back in Friday's loss in Brooklyn and there are fears he might miss signifcant time. The Toronto Dukes have finally climbed out of the basement as it appears the trade that sent Larry Albers to New York two weeks ago has had the desired shake-up effect. Since the move the Dukes, who had the best regular season record a year ago, have gone 4-2 and overtaken New York for 6th place. The Shamrocks have struggled since the trade but it is hard to blame Albers, as the 27 year old pivot has 7 points in 5 games with the Greenshirts. As for the Dukes, the player they acquired in the deal -23 year old defenseman Philippe Dubois- was injured in his third game with the club and will likely miss the rest of the regular season. CHICAGO IS THE NEW CITY OF BROTHERLY LOVE Forget Philadelphia, Brother Acts Lead Cougars, Packers There have been some great brother acts as teammates through the years led by the 4 Barrell boys (Tom, Fred, Harry and Dan) who helped the Brooklyn Kings to dominance in the mid-thirties or the Cleaves brothers (George and Jack) who teamed in Pittsburgh for a stretch but no city in recent memory has seen brother acts as key contributors to not one, but two of its major sports teams. That is until the city of Chicago stepped up with baseball's Jones boys uniting with the Cougars now that the war is over while the Burns brothers have long since excelled for the hockey Packers. The Fort William born duo of Tommy and Wes Burns joined the Packers in time for the 1940-41 season and have starred ever since. Tommy, a 26 year old centericeman, is four years younger than his big brother and has blossomed into one of the best players in the sport. His 113 goals since joining the Packers as a 20 year old is the second most scored by any player over that span and he was rewarded for a tremendous 57 point campaign a year ago with his first McDaniels Trophy as the North American Hockey Confederation's Most Valuable Player. This season he is off to an exceptional start with 6 goals and 14 points in just 5 games. Big brother Wes Burns, 30, is not quite the dominant force that Tommy has become, but he pairs exceptionally well with his brother and scored 50 points a year ago -a career best for the captain of the Packers. The duo is actually a trio as they like to joke that their longtime right winger Marty Mahoney, a 25-year-old Edmonton native who debuted along with the brothers in 1940, is actually a long-lost Burns brother. The way the three anticipate each other's moves on the ice you would almost believe it was true. The Chicago Packers have never won a Challenge Cup, and not reached the Cup Finals since 1931, but the Burns brothers -both the actual brothers and honourary sibling Mahoney might just change that one day. Much the same can be said at Cougars Park where a pair of brothers are at the forefront of a collection of dominant pitchers. Donnie and Johnnie Jones grew up in Minnesota, really not all that far away from the Thunder Bay home of the Burns family. Neither began his pro baseball career in the Windy City but both were acquired by the Cougars through trades in 1939. Each made a brief big league debut in the summer of 1941 -just months after the Burns boys began to delight ice fans at the city's Lakeside Auditorium. Unlike the Burns boys, the Jones brothers ended up putting sports on hold as each served in the US Army before both were reunited in the Cougars rotation last season and each excelled to the point where the pair was invited to participate in the mid-season All-Star Game. They have a lot of company, most notably two-time Allen Award winner Pete Papenfus, but Donnie and Johnnie Jones are part of a deep pitching staff that is being counted on to lead the Cougars to their first World Championship Series victory since 1931 -just a few months before the Packers last reached the Challenge Cup finals. Philadelphia might be known as the City of Brotherly Love, but all of Chicago would love to see both sets of brothers bring long-awaited ice and diamond crowns to the Windy City. ![]() Code:

Dick Klein got the game winner on a power play with just 57 seconds remaining in regulation before Bobbie Sauer sealed it with an empty net goal. Perhaps frustrated by Toronto's tight-checking and his third straight game without a point, Boston scoring leader Tommy Hart was involved in his second fight in 3 games. The other game saw Henri Chasse turn aside all 19 shots he faced to lead the Detroit Motors to a 3-0 win over Brooklyn. THURSDAY DECEMBER 19 A busy Thursday evening with action on three fronts including Brooklyn, where the Eagles avenged the Tuesday loss in Detroit with a 5-2 win over the Motors behind a 3 point night from defenseman Ryan Kennedy. The newest member of the New York Shamrocks made his presence felt as former Toronto Duke Laurel Albers scored with just over a minute remaining to allow the Shamrocks to salvage a 5-5 tie with the Bees in Boston. Albers scored twice and also added an assist while Joe Morey had a hat trick for the Bees to raise his season goal total to 9. Finally in Montreal, Claude Skinner had a goal and 3 assists to pace the Valiants to a 4-1 victory over the Chicago Packers. SATURDAY DECEMBER 21 A second straight victory for the Toronto Dukes as they beat Brooklyn 5-2 with 5 different goal scorers. The Dukes have 5 points in their last six games and may finally be easing into the form they showed last year when the finished with the best regular season record in the league. In the other game George Anderson scored twice to lead Boston to a 4-3 win over Montreal. SUNDAY DECEMBER 22 The Toronto Dukes winning streak ended at two with a 6-3 loss on home ice to the Brooklyn Eagles. Ferdinand Markle paced the Brooklyn side with a goal and two assists. Three third period goals including Graham Comeau's game-winner with 2:40 remaining gave Detroit a 3-2 win on enemy ice in Boston while in New York Moose Vezina's 4 assists helped the Chicago Packers past the Shamrocks 6-2. WEDNESDAY DECEMBER 25 A busy Christmas day with 3 games on the holiday slate. Jocko Gregg and Orval Cabbell provided the scoring while Etienne Tremblay made 30 saves as the New York Shamrocks blanked Chicago 2-0. Veterans Doug Yeadon, Arnold Singleton and Shel Herron each had two points to lead Detroit to a 5-3 victory over the Dukes in Toronto while Boston needed third period goals from Jacob Gron and Larry Dees to escape Brooklyn with a point in a 3-3 draw. THURSDAY DECEMBER 26 A wild first period saw 8 goals scored in the opening twenty minutes including 5 by Montreal as the visiting Valiants came away with two points following a 6-5 victory in Chicago. Claude Skinner had is second 4-point game in a week after scoring 3 times -all in the opening stanza- in this one for the Valiants. FRIDAY DECEMBER 27 Tom Brockers earned his first shutout of the season as the veteran goaltender led the Brooklyn Eagles to a 5-0 win over his former team in Boston. Ian Doyle had 2 goals and 2 assists while Sam Coates chipped in with 3 points for the winners. SATURDAY DECEMBER 28 A pair of 4-3 results from the two Saturday night games. In Brooklyn the visiting Montreal Valiants were victorious despite Quinn Pollack scoring his league high 15th goal of the season for the Eagles. A few miles away at Bigsby Garden the Toronto Dukes pulled even with the New York Shamrocks for 6th place after the Dukes held on for a 4-3 victory giving both clubs 13 points on the season with a rematch on the docket in Toronto for the next night. SUNDAY DECEMBER 29 The Toronto Dukes escaped the NAHC cellar with a 2-1 win over the New York Shamrocks. Mahlon Klein scored both of the Dukes goals including the game winner, unassisted, with less than 3 minutes remaining in the game. Toronto is 4-2-1 over its last 7 games and now has 15 points on the season - two more than the last place Shamrocks, who are 1-6-1 in their last 7 outings. ![]() AROUND THE LEAGUE Burns' Cold Streak Slows Packers -- After an impressive hattrick in a 5-5 tie with the Toronto Dukes, Packers superstar Tommy Burns has failed to find the back of the next in five consecutive contests. In those five games, the Packers have dropped three, tied one, and won one to drop to a tie for third in the NAHC. Tommy still leads the league with 27 points, as he added three assists in those five games, but he's dropped to third in goals (12) and assists (15). Despite the recent struggles, the Packers still lead the league in goals scored (73) and differential (+16), as the Chicago skaters have scored anywhere from 12 to 20 more goals then the other three playoff teams. -Archie Irwin/Chicago Daily News OTHER HEADLINES THIS WEEK

![]() JANUARY 13 , 1947 4 GAME WIN STREAK EXTENDS BEES LEAD After finishing off the final few weeks of 1946 with just 1 win in seven games the Boston Bees flipped a switch when the calendar flipped to 1947. The Bees, winners of 4 of the last 6 Challenge Cups, started January off with 4 straight wins and have extended their lead atop the NAHC to 4 points over second place Chicago. Boston's success has come despite the fact that a key piece of their powerful first line - right winger Jacob Grun- saw his season come to an end in late December with a back injury. Veteran Waldemar Rupp stepped up and filled the spot alongside Tommy Hart and Wilbur Chandler and contributed 6 points over the winning streak. Hart had been in a slump during the losing skid but broke out of it with a hat trick in a 5-4 win over Chicago last Sunday to get the Bees back on track. The 29 year old winger would earn 9 points in 3 games before being held off the scoresheet yesterday in Montreal but that did not prevent the Bees from winning 3-2. Meanwhile, the suddenly struggling Detroit Motors are longing for the good old days of 1946. The Motors were perched at the top of the NAHC standings on New Year's Day, a point ahead of the Boston squad, but it has been all downhill for Detroit since then. The Motors suffered 5 losses in their last six games and now find themseleves in third place, just 2 points up on Montreal for the final playoff berth. Code:

Orval Cabbell had 2 goals and 3 assists while Tom Brescia had 4 points in the win with Etienne Tremblay making 19 saves for his second shutout in less than a week. In Montreal, Quinton Pollack scored twice to lead the visiting Brooklyn Eagles to a 3-1 win over the Valiants. WEDNESDAY JANUARY 1, 1947 Montreal rebounded from the previous night's loss with a 3-1 win at home over the New York Shamrocks with Glen Whitley leading the way with a goal and an assist for the Valiants. In Detroit, three first period goals by the visiting Chicago Packers stood up in a 3-2 victory over the Motors. SATURDAY JANUARY 4, 1947 New York took the back half of a home and home series with Montreal, with the Shamrocks recording a 5-2 win at Bigsby Garden. Laurel Albers and Gil Chandler led the way for the Greenshirts with 3 points each. Lee Carlson scored a pair of third period goals to lift Toronto to a 3-2 win over the Detroit Motors at Thompson Palladium. SUNDAY JANUARY 5, 1947 The first day of 1947 with the maximum 3 games on the slate. Tommy Hart had a hat trick and added an assist to lead Boston to a 5-4 road win in Chicago. Montreal handed Detroit its third straight loss as Bert Lanceleve had a goal and an assist to power the Valiants to a 3-2 win over the visiting Motors while this chapter of the battle of New York went to the Shamrocks, who grounded the Brooklyn Eagles 3-2 thanks to a pair of goals from Gil Chandler to complete a big weekend for the 30 year old Shamrocks forward. TUESDAY JANUARY 7, 1947 Another loss for the Detroit Motors, who fell to 0-4 in January after Pierre Melancon and the Boston Bess blanked the Motors 3-0. Chicago's Norm Hanson also had a shutout -his 3rd of the season- as the Packers dumped the New York Shamrocks 5-0. It was a big game for the Packers top line as Marty Mahoney had 4 points while the Burns brothers, Tommy and Wes, each scored a goal. The final game on a busy Tuesday evening saw the hometown Toronto Dukes rally with third period goals from Rosie McInnis and Dick Klein to beat Montreal 3-1. THURSDAY JANUARY 9, 1947 A high scoring game in Montreal as the visiting Chicago Packers beat the Valiants 7-4 in a contest that saw 11 players score a goal. Plenty of offense in New York as well as defenseman Bert McCalley had 2 goals and an assist to pace the Shamrocks to a 6-3 win over Toronto. Detroit snapped its 4 game losing skid but the Motors are still winless in 1947 after settling for a 3-3 tie with Brooklyn. SATURDAY JANUARY 11, 1947 Tommy Hart scored twice and added an assist to lead the Boston Bees to a 6-2 drubbing of visiting Montreal. The Bees are now 3-0 in Janaury. The only other game saw Toronto and Brooklyn skate to a 1-1 ie as Pat Green's first goal of the season with 2:32 remaining in the game earned the hometown Eagles a point. SUNDAY JANUARY 12, 1947 Boston outshot Montreal 51-20 but some tremendous goaltending from Valiants backup Andy Backlund kept things close. In the end the Bees were too much for the Montreal squad and skated away with a 3-2 win for their fourth straight victory. In Detroit, Marty Mahoney had 3 assists to help lead the Chicago Packers to a 4-1 win over the struggling Motors while in Brooklyn Mike Laforme scored in the third period to allow the visiting New York Shamrocks to leave Prescott Arena with a point in a 1-1 tie with the Eagles. ![]() AROUND THE LEAGUE

![]() JANUARY 20, 1947 SHAMROCKS MOVE INTO FOURTH PLACE The New York Shamrocks are suddenly the hottest team in the NAHC and in the running for their first playoff appearance in 4 years. With 19 games remaining in the season the Shamrocks suddenly find themseleves in the fourth and final playoff spot thanks to recent stretch that saw them take 13 out of a 16 points with a 6-1-1 record. The Greenshirts have picked up the pace ever since the trade that brought veteran center Laurel Albers to the Big Apple from Toronto. The 30 year old has 19 points in 15 games since joining the Shamrocks. Albers acquisition gives New York secondary scoring which may have taken some of the opponents focus off the big line of Orval Cabbell between Gil Corbiel and Tom Brescia. Cabbell has moved up to second in the NAHC scoring parade with 33 points and is tied with Chicago's Tommy Burns for the goal lead at 18. Speaking of Burns, if there is a team that is on a hotter streak than the Shamrocks it would be the Chicago Packers. Since the calendar has turned to 1947, almost everything has gone the Packers way. They've won six of their seven January games, including a stretch of five straight that ended with a 3-2 win over the first place Boston Bees. This brought the Packers within two points of first with two months left in the regular season. The offense continues to be a strength, as the Packers became the first team to top the 100 goal mark this season. Tommy Burns ranks first in points (38) and is tied for top spot in goals (18) while third in assists (20), but he's not the only Packer in the top 5. Marty Mahoney ranks 4th in points (30) and second in assists (23) while Wes Burns (14) is fifth in goals. With four teams making the playoffs, the Packers and Bees seem to have spots secured, but it should be an exciting race between these two teams to capture homefield in the playoffs. Going the other way you have the Detroit Motors and Montreal Valiants. The Motors were briefly in first place as December came to a close but have been awful in January, struggling to a 1-7-1 record on the month. Montreal has not been much better, going 2-7-0 since December 31st. Code:

Siblings have played a big role in professional hockey for as long as the sport existed with perhaps the most famous early duo being the Yeadon boys, Bill and Frank. The British Columbia born pair got their start with Jack Connelly's New Liskeard outfit while the game was in its infancy, and then were instrumental in the creation of the first rival league- a west coast outfit dubbed the Transcontinental Hockey Association. The Yeadon name is still very much a part of the sport over 35 years later as Frank is the head scout for the Detroit Motors, who not coincidentally are owned by Jack Connelly's son John Jr. Frank's two sons are also pro hockey players with 34 year old Doug Yeadon a veteran forward with the Detroit Motors and his 31 year old brother Fred now a defenseman with the Boston Bees after starting his career in the Motor City. The most famous pair of brothers in the league right now are the Burns boys. The subject of a recent Figment Hockey News article on Chicago sports siblings, 26 year Tommy and his 30 year old brother Wes are starring for the Chicago Packers and playing together on the Packers top line. Tommy was the league's most valuable player a year ago and leads the loop in scoring this season with 38 points in 27 games while his left winger Wes has 28 points on the year. Chicago and Detroit each employ one half of the other currently active NAHC brother act. Windsor, Ontario native Garrett Ferrar is a solid two-way center for the Motors who can also play defense when called upon. The 32 year old has 13 goals and 24 points in 29 games this season. Bernie Ferrar is two years younger than his big brother and like his brother can play either forward or defense. He began his career in Detroit with Garrett but was dispatched to the Packers prior to the 1943-44 campaign. This season Bernie has 14 points in 27 games for Chicago. Then there are the Klein boys manning the wings in Toronto. 30 year old Mahlon Klein is the younger of the duo from North Bay and skates on the Dukes top line. He has 6 goals and 21 points in 24 games this season. Big brother Dick Klein is 32 and wears an A on his jersey in Toronto, scoring 7 goals and 17 points this season. We also have the Narand boys who hail form Winnipeg. Tony is a 32 year old forward with Montreal who has been hobbled by injuries this season, scoring twice and adding 4 assists in 10 games with the Valiants. 27 year old Mike Narand began his career in Chicago alongside his older brother. Tony went to Montreal in 1944-45 and Mike was dispatch to Detroit later that same season. Mike had a career high 11 goals for the Motors a year ago but has just 3 goals and 7 points in 24 games with Detroit this season. There is also one more famous brother connection with Detroit ties but it stretches across multiple sports. That would be Jack Barrell, a long-time NAHC star with several clubs -most notably the Toronto Dukes- and a former coach of the Detroit Motors. Barrell was fired by Detroit two years ago and the 48 year old is now coaching the Tacoma Lions of the Great Western Hockey League. He is the only hockey player in the family, but the Barrell's are well known in many other sporting circles. Most notable of which is baseball where five of his brothers (Tom, Fred, Harry, Dan and Bobby) excelled at the sport. Dan was also an Olympian, participating in Paris in the 1924 summer games, while another brother, Jack, was a professional football star and played Tarzan for a spell in the movies. You can read more about the first family of Figment Sports here but it is clear that family ties play a key role in the NAHC. ![]() OTHER HEADLINES THIS WEEK

Sorry I am not sure. All I know is in our league 18 and 19 year olds can play in the minors but in the NAHL. The NAHL draft is 20 so we cannot sign teens or add them to our protected list. Maybe ask in the Technical Support section and someone else might be able to help.

January 27, 1947
![]() JANUARY 27, 1947 CHANGES COMING FOR CANADIAN CLUBS? It has not been a year to be proud of for fans of the two Canadian NAHC teams. The Toronto Dukes have gone from first to worst after posting the league's best mark a year ago, and the Montreal Valiants -picked to be a Challenge Cup contender this season- have struggled of late. The Dukes troubles actually began in the playoffs a year ago when they made a hasty exit in the semi-finals courtesy of the fourth place Valiants. Since then, things have gone from bad to worse for head coach Norb Hickey and his Toronto club. There is still time to turn it around and make the playoffs this season, but a 10-2 blowout loss at home to Detroit yesterday brought the problems to the forefront. There are questions all over the organization with the biggest one perhaps be regarding Hickey himself. It is hard to believe that Toronto would can a coach who won them a pair of Challenge Cups in the past three years but Dukes management has made no secret that big changes may be coming. Another prime scapegoat for the lost season has to be goaltender Gordie Broadway as just a few months removed from a Juneau Trophy the 32 year old is having the worst season of his career and the Dukes have allowed more goals than any other club this season after allowing the fewest -and by a wide margin- a year ago when they went 31-9-8. While much of the blame lies with Broadway, you have to also consider the fact that the Dukes erred in their decision to allow arguably their two best defensemen in Bryant Williams and Joe Todd, to leave for Detroit over the summer. Frank Featherstone -when healthy- and JC Martel have done a decent job as the top pairing, but Toronto has very little blueline depth beyond those two. The situation is nowhere near as bad in Montreal with Valiants slumping, but still with a point of the New York Shamrocks and the final playoff spot. We all know what Montreal did a year ago when the finished fourth by just a single point and then went to the finals where they gave Boston a scare before falling in six games. The issue in Montreal is firmly placed on the goaltending of Millard Touhey. The 30-year-old was in Coach Danny McLachlan's doghouse right from the start of camp when he showed up out of shape. He has been terribly inconsistent at times, and downright awful for much of January and there have been rumours out of Montreal saying change is coming. The trade deadline has come and gone so the Valiants will not be able to add another goaltender to their roster -although there is some speculation an off-season swap of tenders sending Gordie Broadway to the Valiants might be a wise move for both clubs if they each continue to struggle. For now, McLachlan's only choice for a change between the pipes is to give backup Andy Backlund more playing time. The 24-year-old has certainly outplayed Touhey in limited starts this season and has a winning record. Perhaps we will see more of Backlund going forward. Code:

Fortunately the New Yorkers have a light schedule ahead and he will likely just miss one game. Thursday January 23 The other team, besides the Shamrocks, that was on a hot streak saw it cooled off as well as the Chicago Packers saw their 5 game winning streak come to an end with a 5-3 road loss in Brooklyn. Quinton Pollack scored twice for the winners while NAHC scoring leader Tommy Burns had a pair for the Packers. The Valiants are just 4-10-1 on the road, worst in the loop. Friday January 24 A big road win for the Detroit Motors who may have turned things around after a terrible start to the month. Detroit went 8 games without a victory before beating Montreal last Saturday. The Motors have won two out of their last three after a 2-1 win in Brooklyn. Dave Bradley assisted on both Detroit goals while Henri Chasse outdueled Tom Brockers in the nets. Saturday January 25 The last place Toronto Dukes have won two of their last three after holding off the Valiants 3-2 in Montreal. Bobbie Sauer's 15th goal of the season helped the Dukes to a 3-0 lead with Rosie McInnis assisting on all three Toronto goals. Gordie Broadway has struggled at times this season but the veteran Dukes netminder was solid on this night, turning aside 30 Montreal shots. Sunday January 26 Six teams were in action on a busy Sunday night. The Chicago Packers dumped the New York Shamrocks 5-1 behind two goals from Wes Burns. The victory moves the Packers to within two points of first place Boston after the Bees were trimmed 3-2 by the visiting Brooklyn Eagles. Quinton Pollack notched his league high 21st goal of the season for the Eagles. The final game of the night was a rout as the Detroit Motors drove into Dominion Gardens and hammered the Toronto Dukes 10-2. Bill Woodley, who had just three goals all of last season, scored 3 times in this game and rookie Bobo Davis scored the first two NAHC goals of his career while also adding 2 assists. After the loss the Dukes General Manager was livid, stating emphatically "Out shot 49-17 in a 4-3 loss to Montreal then humiliated by the Motors, winds of change are blowing across Lake Ontario. Too late this season but no one is safe on the staff or roster of the Dukes." ![]() FEBRUARY 3, 1947 PACKERS TAKE OVER NAHC LEAD A busy week which saw the Chicago Packers win 3 games and tie a fourth giving them a 9-1-1 record in their last 11 games has boosted the Packers to the top of the NAHC standings. The Packers have 42 points on the season, two more than Boston although the Bees do have a pair of games in hand. The Chicago franchise has been around since the start of the 1925-26 season but has never finished in first place, even during the days of the two division format. The are also the only active NAHC club to have never lifted the Challenge Cup. Chicago star Tommy Burns is riding a 13 game point scoring streak and threatening to rewrite the league's record book. His 24 goals and 50 points -both league highs- put him on a pace to threaten the modern day single season records in each of those categories. Toronto's Gil Nagle is the loop's only 30 goal scorer since 1940 while Sam Koger's 66 points for Toronto in 1943-44 is considered the modern standard. Tommy Burns has a 14 point lead on the next highest total, which happens to belong to his brother and left winger Wes Burns (19-17-36). The right winger on the most prolific line in the league is Marty Mahoney (8-25-33) and he presently sits in a tie for 6th place in the NAHC scoring parade. Code:

Pierre Melancon made 31 saves in the Boston net while Norm Hanson turned aside 25 of the 28 shots he faced for Chicago. Thursday January 30 The Packers were back at it as they continued a busy week that would see them play four times in a six day span. This one was also at Lakeside Auditorium and Tommy Burns was the hero, netting the game winner with less than 5 minutes remaining to lift Chicago past the Brooklyn Eagles 4-3. Ed Delarue scored twice for the winners while Eagles rookie sensation Quinton Pollack had 3 assists in a losing cause. In Detroit, the Motors concluded a terrible January with a strong 3-game winning streak that culminated in a 5-1 drubbing of Toronto just 5 days after the Motors scored 10 goals in game in Toronto. Dave Bradley scored twice and added an assist to pace the Motors. Saturday February 1 A quiet Saturday evening with just one game as the Toronto Dukes, licking their wounds after leaving Detroit, headed to Chicago and were beaten for the fourth time in the last five games. falling 3-1 to the Packers thanks to third period goals from Chicago's Tommy Burns and Ian Groening. The Packers outshot the Dukes 50-21 and only an outstanding effort by Gordie Broadway in goal for the Dukes prevented a rout. The Chicago win lifted the Packers into sole possession of first place, two points up on idle Boston. Sunday February 2 The Chicago Packers have gone 10-2-1 since New Years Eve with the latest victory being a 5-2 triumph over Toronto to complete the home-and-home sweep of the Dukes. Wes Burns had 2 goals and an assist to move into second in the league point race and his brother Tommy scored his NAHC leading 24th goal of the season moving the star center to within 4 goals of his career best mark established last season when he won the McDaniels Trophy as the league's top player. Tommy Burns is also within 8 of Gil Nagle's modern day record for goals in a season with 42 for Toronto in the 1941-42 campaign. In other Sunday action the Boston Bees kept pace with the Packers by doubling the Brooklyn Eagles 4-2 at Prescott Arena. Benton Walston led the way for the Bees with 2 goals and an assist. Finally in Montreal, the Valiants and the visiting New York Shamrocks each played their only game of the week. The New Yorkers, led by assists on both goals from Tom Brescia, trimmed the Valiants 2-1 to move 3 points ahead of Montreal in the race for the fourth and final playoff berth.
