Resigning on the TOO cheap
Something I've noticed is my ability to resign many (not all, by any means) arb eligible players for really cheap, in fact for MUCH cheaper than the earned the year before (which never happens with arb eligible players, they almost always sign for more the next year). Let me give you some examples.
Position/ Age/ VORP /Money made Last Year /Resigned and per year amount Player A SS / 28 / 12.8 / 2.8mil / .8mil per for 4 years Player B 2B /28 / -5.0 (though 12.8 1 year ago, 24.7 2 years ago) / 4mi / .95mil per for 4 years Player C LF / 31 (last year arb, late bloomer?) / 8.6 (though 14.4 1 year ago, 28.8 2 years ago) / 2.6mil / .7mil per 3 years I know the players are not great, but the point is that 1) they are arb. eligible 2) they made more two-three times the money the year before and either 3a) they are pretty good (Player A, Player C maybe) 3b) they have a significant track record (Player B and C). There is no reason a player in their position would sign a contract extensions for significant less than they would make by going to arbitration. Have others noticed this? |
