Problem making new league

I tried to make a new league using Lahman's database. It starts to import the league and after about 85%, the game crashes and I'm back at the windows desktop. First time I did this, it crashed twice and finally completed on the 3rd attempt.

This morning, I tried making another league using the same parameters so I could start my league over. Again, it gets to 85% and then crashed. This time, I tried 4 times with no luck.

What could be my problem?

Are you trying to import the full stat history along with the players? That is the likely problem. This task uses a lot of system memory so if you don't have a lot of memory in your PC it can crash. If you have memory intensive programs running along with OOTP in can cause a crash. You could try shutting down Norton (if you have that) and see if it helps.

I bet if you try importing without all the stats it would work but I am sure you, like most, want the full history with the import. What year are you trying to import, btw?

Yes, I'm trying to import the full history. I figured it would give better stats and make the game more realistic. I'm running McAfee and can shut that down temporarily to install the league.

And looking at my name, you can see I'm a Red Sox fan and am trying to import 2004. I want to replay the season to see if I can get the Sox to win it all just like in real life. Then I'll go from there to see what I can do with them.

OK, well try with McAfee shut down. I am sure it is a resource hog just like Norton.

Thanx. Will give it a try tonight and see if that helps. If not, I'll be back to let you or anyone else know.

Please do. If it doesn't work and you want to start a bit earlier with your Sox you can DL my 1994 quickstart here.

I gotta ask, what are the PC specs (processor, HD size, memory, operating system)? Are you patched to the most current version?

It's a system I built. It's kind of old. Got a 1gig processor with 512megs of ram. Got over 170gigs free on the hard drive and running XP. And yes, have it patched to latest version.

My guess is it is a RAM problem then. As I mentioned earlier this is a memory intensive process - from what I have seen posted elsewhere - and that is the likely cause. Sorry, wish I could be of more help to you.

I wouldn't say that. You can try playing with 2007 roster files or a fictional league. It might not be the ideal league you want but it can still be a lot of fun.

I've got to say that I have 512 MB RAM using Windows 2000 and I've never had any problems running fictional leagues, though I've never dabbled with historical. Yaz, do you have any other programs besides McAfee running when trying to create this league? Maybe if you tried shutting everything else down and simply left the computer alone while it was creating the league, it might work.

I tried that, too. I can start a historical league. Just can't import career data so guess I'll have to play it that way until I can either figure out how to afford to upgrade my computer or until someone donates parts to a poor man. LOL

Thanx for all your help.

For kicks and giggles, you might try a search of a freeware ram manager. I use one associated with SysTech - which I purchased though - and every time my game lags a bit, for whatever reason, I punch the defrag ram and things start to speed back up. Some of those you can even program to do automatically in the background as necessary.

Am I remembering correctly that at one time (maybe back before the first patch) there was a problem importing full history for any year after 1977?

Yaz, if you're up for a little more frustation, try importing up to 1961 and see if that works. If it does, then we may have a repeat of an old bug.

If it doesn't, then you could still try bp_'s 1994 quickstart. (Not that I'm trying to downplay your disappointment here.)

ok, Curtis, I tried that. I tried installing a 1961 league and still no luck. Guess I'm going to take this as a loss, uninstall the game and be done with OOTP forever. I hate to do it because I like the game but I'm having no luck with it.

This may be a little bit out there, but maybe you could convince a friend to create the league for you, zip it up, and then send it to you? It would probably work fine after the initial creation.

Yeah, that would work. The problem is purely in the creation. The game loads tons of data into memory when importing the entire history of baseball, and it's just far too much for 512 megs to handle, especially since WinXP is probably using about 200 megs of that.

Well? Can one of you do it for me? I'm trying to start with 2004, the year my Red Sox won the world series.

PLMK

Thanx
