Tough Decisions

I used my 1901-2007 sim as a test for a solo league. After thinking I got the numbers where I'd like them, but not really caring too much, I started playing my league. I sim a month at a time, generally acting more like a GM than a Manager. I started in 1901 running the Boston Americans (which I will always run) and just finished the 1905 season. We made the World Series in 1901 (blowing a lead in the top of the 9th in Game 7! ARGH!) and again in 1905, winning neither time. Unfortunately, this is where it gets difficult.

With the AI's tendency to overvalue pitchers, I've assembled a very strong, young offense primarily through the draft and one or two Shop Around trades (I won't initiate full blown trades with the AI, it's too easy, so I only use Shop Around or wait for a trade to be offered to me (and even then I can't negotiate at all, have to take it or leave it at face value)). All of my positional starters except for my C are 27 or younger and all are at least 4 stars except for my 3B (3.5 stars). I even have a 4.5 and a 4 star as two of my utility infielders. In last year's draft, the AI left Ty Cobb sitting there in the middle of the first round with 11/10/2/6/9 Potential. I can't leave an 11 Contact guy untouched!

He provided me with a 3.7 VORP, .286/.348/.333 line in 54 games and 63 ABs as my primary 4th outfielder before getting hurt for the second half of the season. His ratings continued to develop and he's now rated at 8/8/1/5/10. Unfortunately, I have a 25 YO RFer rated 7/7/4/5/8 who just gave me a 36 VORP season and managed 10 HRs (by far the most on the team). I don't really want to trade this guy, but what choice do I have with Ty Cobb ready on the bench?

I really need to House Rule myself when it comes to positional players in the first round (but I got my 1905 RoY and MVP winning SS in the 2nd round the same year as Cobb!) if I have a winning ballclub or something like that. Maybe after this season.

Well you guys were a lot of help.

Shopping Around Harry Lumley, the incumbent RFer, provided three players the AI would give me - none of whom are useful for me despite being decent ballplayers.

Shopping Around Ty Cobb, only one player appears - the 6/10/7 rated pitcher who was the first overall draft pick in this past draft. He is going to be a stud, but I can't do that to the AI. So, for now, I'm going to continue using Cobb as my backup outfielder but setting his playing time to try and get him in at each position once a week or so.

A draft house rule that I have is that I cant pick a position player until either the CPU picks one, or the 3rd round whichever comes first

Yeah, I think I need to restart with draft rules. Ah well, I was only in 1906.
