From the free agent signing page, click "Import Historical Player."
Enter the player ID (you can find this from bbreference, or opening the database itself in Excel), the year you are in, and any other modifiers. It will put him in free agency. |

I believe that means the player ID was not in the database.
It should be the first five letters of the last name, the first two letters of the first name, and then two digits. i.e. Albert Pujols = pujolal01 |

I'm having the same issue. I've got the whole lehmann database. I've got it in a directory - and I select master.csv when I open the import. I put in ruthba01 for the ID and 1914 for the year (though I've also used 1915 and 1935). I get the fail to import error. I'm not sure what I'm missing. (In OOTP 10) I've done it before in 8 and 9.

I guess I need to find out what kinds of things could make the import fail. I have all the files in the lehmann database... I've got the correct year. I'm not sure what else I could be missing.

Not sure if this is the problem or not but the lastest Lahman added an extra column that has been causing problems. Search the forums lahman and maybe you can find the answer and if that is your problem they have a workaround for it. Has something to do with just deleting one of the columns . If I remember correctly, 2 columns are the same, but one has missing data or something like that.

Well, I ended up using the master.csv that was located in the OOTP 10 directory in my Documents directory and it worked. I wonder why I didn't have luck with 5.6 or 5.7. *shrug* Works enough for me though.

From the 11 manual
One 'trick' to finding the player's ID is to visit BaseballReference.com. Look up the player you wish to import, and then check the URL string. The player's unique ID is the portion of the file name before .shtml. |
