Historical Test- Devel/modifiers
I am posting this thread to show the test I am doing with a historical 1901-present sim in progress.
I want to test two new key tweeks to the game to see if it improves historical accuracy. 1 the first of these is the totals modifiers. One problem I have noticed, and why i mostly stopped playing historical games at all, is that the stats for players- especially batters were always far below actual. A home run leader by the end might be mays or ruth but with 600 total, and batting averages were far less than what was expected. Then when i looked at the modifiers, at times they would be very very low .779 or something in 2b .554 hmruns. I did a test with mods always at 1.000 and i saw that really didn't work either, it seems some year things need to be a bit higher than 1.000 to work out right so each year on opening day i will go in and modify the modifiers so this test will make any less than 1.000 modifier .997 for that year, if it is above 1.000 that is fine, except the max will be 1.200 (already in 1923 the hr mod became 1.588 before change). I can tell you that this tweek has been producing terrific results so far as you will see in the posts below. but i am only through 1925 so will see how it continues onward. only one year 1911 turned out a bit off 2 The second thing this test is testing is development. as mentioned in a thread on general matters, I have a historical problem with recalc on that a player stops and ratings change after the last year of a database. thus a good player who pitched 3 games in 1902 and got a good rating from it, might play 20 years and win 300 games, which is unrealistic. or a player say bill kiester who'se last year was 1903 and batted .320. he will stay .320 till he retires at maybe 42 with 3600 hits which is also unrealistic. keister should get to be good still, but decline over time like any player in a fictional league. the only other option is to click "retire as in real life" but i like to allow players to have longer carrers, not drop a player from the replay just because he got a real-life career ending injury, nor to have an advantage over the ai to know which players will for sure drop in talent and which would stay so i began by testing development mods on .100 (to basically have no development during the season) and aging at .500 (but that turned out to be too low, and i have to bump it up, but that was the number i started). i will show a few examples of such players along the way 3 As for the rest. I took over the New York Yankees-Highlanders-Orioles in 1901, the first year when players can be on their actual teams. there will be no draft, players come to their first team. in a few cases where a great player never really played for that team- ie mordicai brown who came with st louis but a star for the cubs, i make a trade to get their to their right team. then if the cubs want to trade him after that is up to them. i will only trade for players who basically were on yankee teams throughout history- move players who were stars on other teams, and then fill in the gaps withe secondary players. Will have a 162 game sched for every team (redone at the start of each new season), game begins with 4 man staffs, closers at often, relievers at normal, fatigue high (all less than actual to get a few more pitchers used). i will keep this until the yearly strategy matches these and gets lower, then the game can go on its own with them I will bring in a few great managers over history- miller huggins, hugh jennings, earl weaver, sparky anderson ect as history goes, but not pay too much attention to them, just give 10 year contracts with their normal team and see how it goes. will alter their strategy slightly to reflect them as managers On the start i had to modify the managers in 1901 a) as many mangers were players at age 29 which in game time they would manage for 35 years which was not right for those guys (save mack and mcgraw) so i aged the managers, and evened out the strategy as some are rated ALL to teh right side, others ALL in the middle (ie some managers have strategy ratings and others none, which seems unfair). the new ones developed by the game will have thier own strategy of course ok that was a lot of talking, but wanted you guys to know what i was doing Here is teh first run to 1919 sorry i forgot to take screenshots of 1901 and 1903 at the beginning, but all the rest have them. i will post the seasons then a short commentary and update League history was deleted but a few top selected players were given an arbitrary history for 1893-1900 more in line with what is expected numbers wise between 1900-1919 Last edited by sprague; 05-17-2013 at 05:49 PM. |

(so far these were the only years with players a bit high- i think cobb and jackson were so good in their era, that getting things evened out just showed what great hitters they really were) Last edited by sprague; 08-17-2014 at 06:55 PM. |

i have had injuries on very low- mostly to help test out how all the big stars do with this system. as you can see, i think the numbers for all the leaders so far is turning out very well
Here are two examples of players who had short careers but contined on- bill keister declined too fast, while st vrain i think went on too long in his carrer- but again i was a .400 or .500 for the aging mods. this should get better as it goes along |
