Catcher Defensive Efficiency and Passed Balls / Wild Pitches
Hi, new to the game but really enjoying it. A couple of questions about catchers:
1) Which (if any) of the catcher defensive ratings impact their ability to prevent passed balls and/or wild pitches? Catcher ability? Infield range? Infield error? 2) What do the defensive efficiency metrics ZR and EFF measure for catchers? I found a very helpful thread (link below) that explains the other positions but it doesn't cover catchers, and the number of chances measured is way too high for it to be just the chances where the catcher fields a ball in play. Thanks. http://www.ootpdevelopments.com/boar...ut-zr-eff.html |

1) Catcher Ability. That covers everything other than errors on balls in play (IF Error) and throwing out baserunners (Catcher Arm).
2) To the best of my knowledge, strikeouts caught are included in a catcher's chances, presumably since there is a chance he'd drop it and the batter get on base. How exactly this is figured into ZR or EFF, I don't know. |

Catcher ability has a direct impact on pitching staff performance. Catchers with high ratings in this category will generally help your staff pitch a bit better than it would otherwise.

I recall debate on this, Charlie. Can you be sure of it? I'm asking out of interest.

Thanks all, much appreciated. This might explain why my catcher with a very high position rating (but totally arm-dependent; catcher ability is mediocre) is constantly chasing the ball to the backstop.

Your pitchers play a role too. If their control is bad, even a decent catcher may have difficulty avoiding wild pitches. And if you're pitching around a batter, I would assume that this increases the chances of a wild pitch or passed ball as well, though it's a very acceptable risk against good hitters if your pitches are at least above average in control. |
