John Smith, the Las Vegas Mafia and the NABA

January 1st, 1911
Las Vegas, Nv.,

The Iron Boot was established in 1890 by Gunther Von Revoch, a german immigrant. Under Von Revoch's ownership the Iron Boot was the place where Las Vegas's social elite met. The Iron Boot became Von Revoch's pride and joy, and one of his true loves.

Unfortunately, gambling was his second love, and as such that is how Von Revoch came to lose the Iron Boot to Patrick "Paddy" O'doule, a no good card cheat.

The story goes that in 1899, in a game of cards with O'doule, Von Revoch threw the deed to the Iron Boot into the pot, certain he had a winning hand. O'doule laid down a full house, Aces and Eights, commonly refered to as the dead mans hand. Von Revoch also laid down a full house, Kings over Aces. Von Revoch accused O'doule of cheating, and as he reached over to gather the deed and pot, O'doule shot him between the eyes.

When the Las Vegas Police came to investigate, O'doule produced 3 witness that stated Von Revoch became upset at losing the Iron Boot and came at O'doule, forcing him to act in self defense. The testimony of these less then upstanding citizens, along with alittle money under the table to the Police Chief and O'doule was cleared.

From that point on, the Iron Boot became the gathering place for Las Vegas's men of ill repute, and how I came to find myself standing just outside the saloon doors on a cold rainy night.

I stepped in and gave myself a moment or two to allow my eyes to adjust to the light. Despite the poor lighting I could tell that at one time the Iron Boot was a magnficent place. A large mahogany bar ran the length of the West wall, and behind it a mirror that matched the length of the bar, along with a brass foot rest.

A large chandelier hung in the center of the room, giving off a soft light, as several of the small oil lamps where missing, probably as the result of having been shot out some time ago, and the lamps having never been replaced.

As my eyes became accustomed to the lighting in the room I noticed two fellars standing at the bar, an a few more at a table or two.

It was not surprising, being as the weather outside was miserable, and most folks where hunkered down inside their homes.

I walked up to the bar, and had the bartender pour me a shot, tossing it back, before ordering a second.

My attention was drawn to a table in the back, where four fellars set, their talk loud and boisterous.

One of the fellars got up and headed towards the bar, and I watched him in the mirror as he approached, recognizing him to be the one they called Red.

"Tom, another round of beers." he called to the barkeep.

I took a small sip of the whiskey, my eyes gazing into the mirror, recognizing the other two fellars who had been with Red on the the night they had ruffed up Ageda. The fourth fellars face was obscured by the shadows, and I could not make out any features.

My attention was brought back to Red, and as the stench of whiskey and beer hit my nostrils, I realized he was talking to me.

"Hey, you to good to talk to me Mister?"

I turned my gaze towards him, looking him in the eye, resisting the urge to pull the peacemaker then and there. I could tell that in his alcohol induced stupor he did not recognize me. I kept my hand on my drink, simply saying "sorry, I didn't hear you."

"I said why don't you find it in your pocket to buy a round for me and my friends over there" he indicated by pointing a thumb over his shoulder to the group at the table.

"Sure, Sure, bar keep, set em up with a round on me." I called to the barkeeper, Tom.

Red slapped me on the shoulder, like I was his new best friend. Threw back his drink laughing, and turned to head back to group with their drinks.

"You don't remember me?" I asked.

Red stopped and turned back to the bar, walking up to stand next to me, trying to will his mind to remember who I was. I slowly turned to face him, pushing the brim of my hat up slightly, so that he could get a better look.

"I told you I would put my next shot right into your gut." I said, my steel gaze burrowing into his eyes.

His face flushed, as he realized who I was, and he raised his right hand hoping to land a blow. My right hand fell to the peacemaker, smoothly and quickly pulling it from the holster with the practiced ease developed so long ago.

Pushing the barrel up against Red's belly, I fired two shots, and he crumpled to the floor, his hands trying to push his insides back in. I quickly turned, snapping off a shot at the fellar sitting to the left. The round struck him in the upper right chest, sending him spinning and falling out his chair. I caught a flash out of the corner of my eye, and could hear the bullets hitting and shattering the mirror behind me. The third fellar had made the mistake of rushing his shots, and I calmly pulled out the second colt in my shoulder holster with my left hand, bringing it up. Another round smashed into the bar next to my hip, and I fired the big colt, three rounds in quick succession.

I watched as the rounds struck his chest, causing him to fall back into his chair, his head slumping, the pistol in his hand falling to the floor. Now armed with both colts, I walked up to the table. The fourth fellar, his hands on the table, unmoving, his face still hidden in the shadows.

"It would seem, that you have a skill I was not aware of Senor Smith." came a voice from the shadows.

"You know me?" I asked, somewhat surprised.

"Si, I know you and you me." came the response, as the face of Luis Ortiz appeared from out of the shadows.

At one time, Luis Ortiz was a player for the Las Vegas Mafia. I had brought him to the team in trade, but, we had a falling out when he became upset with his playing time, and I shipped him off to the Columbus Cruz. I had heard rumor he had been involved in a fight in the Columbus clubhouse and had knifed the manager for sitting him on the bench. From there, he just disappeared. I never would have believed he would have returned to Las Vegas.

"Luis!"

"Si, it is me." he sneered, pulling that same large bone handle knife out of his waistband that he had used to threaten me years ago, with rattlesnake quickness. He lept at me from across the table, displaying the cat like agility he had as a player. The peacemaker in my right hand belched fire, once and then twice. Luis fell, sprawled across the table, the life fading from his eyes.

Holstering both Colts I walked back to the bar, picking up my drink and downing the last of it. A moan came from the floor, next to my feet. Red had managed to pull himself up to a sitting position, and was leaning against the bar, holding his gut.

"Mister, we..we... never meant... to killem, we... never meant...."

The sound of the peacemaker drowned out his last words.

Sources close to starting pitcher Dan Gaines are indicating he may sign with the Memphis Gamblers. Gaines was in Memphis recently and appeared to favor the Gamblers offer. Gaines was 10-15 with a 2.22 ERA last season for Dallas.

Is Earl Parke close to signing with the Columbus Knights? Parke has entered into intense negotiations with the Knights and has made it
known that he would enjoy playing for the contender. Parke was 11-2 with 16 saves and a 1.03 ERA last season for the World Series Champion Raleigh Rebels.

Another big name free agent is close to signing a deal. According to sources close to the Philadelphia Liberty, starting pitcher Fernando
Fernandez is close to inking a deal. The 28yo Fernandez was 23-14 with a 2.59 ERA last season for Columbus.

Rumors are swirling that Nicolas "Hard Times" Marie is looking to land in Memphis. Marie has made it known that he would like to play for a team located in the warmer southern parts of the country, and Memphis suits that want. Last season for Portland Marie was 7-1 with 9 saves and a 1.39 ERA.

02/02/11
Well, it looks like negotations fell apart for Earl Parke and the Columbus Knights, as it is now believe that Parke is in Butte talking to the Grizzlies. Parke stated he hoped to have a decision made within the next week.

02/05/11
News out of Sioux Fall is that shortstop Akihiko Sawada is close to working out a deal with the Cowboys. Last season for Buffalo Sawada hit .322 with 3 home runs and 27 RBIS.

At the same time, sources out of Memphis are saying that Akihiko Sawada is close to signing off on a contract with the Gamblers. It would seem that Sawada is putting out alot of misinformation and keeping teams guessing as to where he will land.

League Signings

We reported earlier that starting pitcher Fernando Fernandez was close to inking a new deal with the Philadelphia Liberty, and the Liberty have now confirmed that a contract has been agreed to by the 28yo Fernandez. The Liberty have agreed to a five year contract with Fernandez that will pay him $4,260 per season.

02/08/11
It appears as though Earl Parke will take his glove and ply his trade for the Buffalo Ironclads. The 43yo Parke agreed to a one year contract that will pay him $2,460 this season.

After having missed out on several big name free agents, the Memphis Gamblers finally received some good news when 34yo Starting Pitcher Dan Gaines agreed to a two year contract valued at $11,200.

Several weeks had passed since the incident at the Iron Boot, and things were starting to return back to normal in the office. Sara was back at work, the players we wanted under contract were, and the visit from Inspectors Popes and Thomas I was expecting never took place.

I assumed that Inspectors Popes and Thomas suspected I had a hand in the incident at the Iron Boot, but that the Las Vegas Police Department had decided to keep the matter quite. Well, that, or neither of the Inspectors were as bright as I had given them credit for.

What did come as a surprise was the teams owner Mr. Boyer walking in.

"Hello John."

"Hello Mr. Boyer, what unexpected surprise." I said, standing and shaking his hand.

"Sorry to drop in un-announced John, but, I wanted to meet with you concerning some changes that will be forthcoming."

"Changes? Should I be concerned Mr. Boyer." I asked.

"Oh no, no, no, John, I am quite happy with the teams performance, well except for the playoffs. I have..."

Mr. Boyer was interrupted from continuing his thoughts on the playoffs by Sara's knock on my office door.

"Excuse me Mr. Smith, but there's a Mr. Trenton here to see you and Mr. Boyer."

"Sara, I don't believe I have an appointment with any such fellar." I replied.

"It's ok John, I asked Mr. Trenton to meet me here." came Mr. Boyers response.

"Well then Sara, show him in."

"Yes Mr. Smith."

A young fellar walked in, sharply dressed, a gold chain hung from his vest pocket, his shoes nicely shined. His left hand holding a black derby hat that was obvisouly new, as he shook Mr. Boyers hand enthusiastically.

"John, I want you to meet Frank Trenton. Mr. Trenton is fresh out of Harvard and a fine young lad."

"Pleasure to meet you Mr. Smith." he said, taking my hand and giving it a firm shake, before taking a seat across from my desk and Mr. Boyer.

"Can I offer you something to drink Mr. Trenton."

"No thank you, and please call me Frank."

I got up and poured a drink for Mr. Boyer, who I knew would never pass up a chance to have some Kentucky Bourbon. After handing Mr. Boyer his drink, I returned to my seat and waited to see what this sudden meeting concerned.

Mr. Boyer took a few sips of his bourbon, and then cleared his throat before speaking.

"John, I've been thinking about the past events concerning Bill's passing. I cannot get past that its somehow my fault."

"Mr. Boyer, I hardly think..."

"No, No John, I feel responsible. Had Bill not needed to bring the payroll to the team and the gate receipts to me I dont think this would have happened. As such, I have decided to make some changes."

Mr. Boyer took another sip from his glass, as both myself and Mr. Trenton waited for him to continue.

"John, I have decided its time to build a new ballpark for the team."

"A new ballpark?"

"Yes, a new ballpark. It will contain offices for the paymaster, staff, and of course myself. I want everything related to the team to be together, so we dont have a repeat of what happened with Bill. I have also decided that Mr. Trenton here will be our new director of sales, and handle..."

"Sorry to interrupt Mr. Boyer, but I handle the advertising sales."

"Not anymore John. I want you to concentrate on the team, Mr. Trenton will concentrate on advertising and sales. The new ballpark will be completed by the opening day of the 1912 season. Frank, show John the plans for the new ballpark please."

"John, the new ballpark will have room for close to 20,000 individuals, almost four times the capacity of the current park. Mr. Boyer has spared no expense on the ballpark, it will be built with brick and mortar, unlike the current park that is currently of aging, and dry rotted wood. There will be additional room for more staffing and storage. It will be the finest ballpark in the NABA." Frank said proudly.

An artist rendering of the Boyer Park.

"More importantly John, it will be completed before Raleigh's new ballpark, and the league's new commishoner, Steed, has guarenteed me that we will host the NABA All-Star game next year if its completed by opening day."

"The All-Star game? Mr. Boyer, no NABA team has held the All-star game in their city, its always been played in cities that don't have a team."

"Yes, true, but that is going to change. Commishoner Steed feels that it would benefit the league more to hold the All-Star game in cities that have teams."

"I see."

"Raleigh's owner is also building a staduim, and the commishoner has told me that they will get the All-Star game if our stadium is not ready. I intend for ours to be, I don't think that Raleigh needs another feather in their cap by being recognized as the first NABA city with a team to host the game."

"I agree."

"So, Frank will handle the advertising, and you, John, concentrate on getting me that NABA World Series title. I taint getting any younger you know."

NABA PRE-SEASON PREDICTIONS

OOC: Once again it looks like Columbus should be the class of the East Divison, running away with it. Portland continues to just dominate the Yankee Leagues West Divison. Kansas City predicted to win 91, and still be 15 games out. Tough out there in the West.

OOC: Raleigh again in the Dixie Leagues East, no surprise there. But, Reno is expected to give us a fight this season. If Joey Coffey plays 156 games for Salt Lake City I would be stunned. Unless thats 156 games predicted on the DL. What! No Ageda, no Karamura on the top 10 pitchers list. Thats criminal in and of itself. Bah, what do sportswriters know.

Las Vegas Mafia Spring Training Notes

Good:
  • Karamura, Williams, Ageda and Madrigal looked good.
  • Closer Martinez was back on track, and bullpen is deep.
  • Miguel Moreno and Julio Perez had very good springs, look like they can give us some much needed depth should the rotation suffer injuries. Not bad for nothing more then minor league contracts.
  • Pepe Garcia won the second base job, but just barely over Enrique Soto.
  • Alvin York blistered the ball and looks to be in regular season form.

We also finished the spring 17-7.
Bad:
  • Third baseman Bill Kessler missed most of spring training due to injury, and will miss opening day.
  • Starting Pitcher Ryan Sharp was bombed, I'm worried about him.
  • None of the outfielders other then York hit worth their weight.

We open the season against hated Raleigh.
Mr. Boyer has informed me that nothing short of the playoffs will due. The team is more then capable, and we should meet his expectations.

"Kitt, can you tell me what is going on with Delaney and Shafto? Both of them seem to really be having trouble putting the wood on the ball this season."

"I can't rightly say John. Shafto was injured earlier and missed a few days, but he had a good spring and looked like he was his ol self. As to Delaney, Ima thinkin maybe hes agittin abit long in the tooth."

"Delaney is only 30 years old Kitt, he can't be losing it already."

"Now John, you know as well I as I do, some players lose it before others. And this may be the case. What does Sellers think about Delaney?"

"Sellers? Hell Kitt, he taint got any idea about baseball or players. I only hired him as the scout because Mr. Boyer forced my hand."

"Maybe so John, but, it wouldn't hurt to ask him his opinion I suppose."

A knock on the door by Sara Topin interrupted my conversation with Kitt.

"Yes Sarah?"

"Sorry to disturb you Mr. Smith, but Earl Barber is here, says he wants to speak with you. I told him you were in a meeting with Mr. Dellas, but he said that he needed to speak to Mr. Dellas also, so it's best that he's here."

"Send him in Sarah."

Looking over at Kitt, I raised my eyebrows, and he shrugged his shoulders in response.

"Sorry to disturb you Mr. Smith, but I needed to speak with you, and since Kitts here, it made sense to talk to both of you togather." Earl Barber stated as he walked into my office.

"It's ok Earl, what seems to be on your mind."

"Well, I'ma thinking its time to hang up my cleats after this season. taint doing the team much good just sittin on the bench, and well, Ima thinkin its time."

"Earl," Kitt Dellas replied, "I hope this decision isn't based on your playing time. You still have something to offer the team."

"No sir Skipper, I'm 36, and I know that is old by baseball standards. No, playing time dont have much to do with it. But think ya for the kind words."

"Earl, what you have planned for after baseball."

"Well John, I don't rightly know, I was hoping maybe I could land a job doing coaching or some such with the team. I plan on staying in Las Vegas and such."

"I think we can do that, however, you might have to coach one of the minor league teams, Denver or Plano. Think you can handle that?"

"yes sir."

"Get with me at the seasons end Earl, and I will let you know what openings we have and see what we can arrange."

"Thank you Mr. Smith, and I'll see you on the field skip."

After Earl left, Kitt sat back and the room was silent for a few moments.

"Teams agittin old John. First Earl, then Javier Sanchez, and so on. Hell, Tyler Young might even decide to hang em up."

"Team is starting to get old Kitt, and so is Mr. Boyer, thats why you need to get us past Raleigh and a league championship." I replied, "As to Tyler Young retiring, hell, I imagine we will have to bury him under second base."

Kitt shook his head laughing.

"So, you going to meet with Sellers and ask his opinion on Shafto and Delaney?"

"No Kitt, I dont think so. Ima thinkin he needs to head down mexico way and experience life on the road as a scout. I think it will do him some good."

"Him or you?" Kitt asked laughing.

"Both." I replied laughing back.
