Beginner settings

Does anyone have any recommendations on a set of settings for a beginner? I know you can set it to let the CPU manage whatever you want, but that's not what I want. I'm looking for some settings that will allow me to ease into the game, without being overwhelmed by the various options.

Well, letting the CPU manage things you do not understand or have no desire to micro-mange is the way to do it. Just go to your manager options and set everything to CPU control and then only turn on the ones you think you will enjoy handling.

Also, playing day-to-day rather than simming a week or more at a time is the quickest way to get a handle on what is going on.

You can also turn off parts of the game that are confusing you or you don't have any interest in. Coaches, scouts, international player creation, finances and more are all optional.

Some things you might disable are, waivers, option years and right to refuse being sent to the minors. I would also probably turn off the whole draft pick signing bonus feature until I was more comfortable with the game.

You can also play the game without financials turned on altogether, or use the reserve clause rules. This might help you get to know the in game managing aspect of the game, before you delve into the financial side.

A lot depends on what you find interesting; are you playing OOTP for the team management? To play the games? The financials?

I'd have to say mostly team management, with an eye towards getting involved in financials down the road. I intend to manage a few games here and there, but mostly intend to sim.

Maybe let the AI handle lineups and pitching, while you take care of the roster? That's what I've done in the past -- only in OOTP 15 have I interfered (and that was only to get the most out of Carlos Santana).
