Promote now? Or season more?
Would you promote this guy now or season him in AAA for season (I have already moved him up to the AAA team at the conclusion of the 1902 season, just wondering if I should leave him there, or bring up all the way). He tore up AA, and normally my rule of thumb is a season in each level, no skipping. However, I need a 2nd baseman in a bad way, and that 70 contact screams Major League ready. My fictional league is only made up of AAA and AA minors and I'm getting ready to start the 1903 season.

Yea, I'd call him up. Unless he fails during Spring Training, he's more than ready. Maybe give him a month or two at AAA if you really want to. That contact, speed, fielding should make up for a few of his strikeouts he may get for a month or two.

I don't have any testing to back it up, and I haven't played any leagues in that era, but it always seems like bringing up guys who have a lot more room to develop their 'avoid K's' too early results in a stunted development. My theory is the decrease in moral from striking out more often than they should is the cause.
Even if that is nonsense ... unless you expect calling him up now will be the move that bumps you to a championship year, see if you can let him simmer for at least part of the upcoming season. Having a low discipline is not something you typically want in a guy you want for his contact hitting. |

I'd put him in AAA for however much time give you an extra year of control of him.

The striking out too much in MLB issue might be balanced out by the fact that the player expects to be playing at the MLB level. You might be in a lose-lose situation morale-wise. If you have a hole at the 2B position on your MLB club, he looks ready enough to take the job.

in my case i wouldnt bring him up unless I have to ... found players in my game seem to be at par for MLB at age 24 and die at 37 pretty much and age 27 to 33 (or35) they be at peak.

In my experience, a player is a lot more likely to reach his potential if you wait to bring him up til the gap between current and potential level is somewhat smaller than that.

Just an update. I left him in AAA, after a month an a half he is hitting .356/.408/.402 with 13 RBIs in 18 games. Hard to resist not calling him up, as my current 2nd baseman is .233/.258/.302 with a HR and 20 RBIs.
As we are 12.5 out at the start of June, its an easy call to make to let him set and season in AAA for the year. |
