From experience, I have never reached a cap in contract offers. You can also sign more players than you have slots for and they will be in DFA status for 10 days until you assign them to a team or they are automatically released.

Thanks. I just threw about a dozen offers out there in my online league and I am interested in seeing what happens once the sim is run.

From my experience you can have as many as you want in the minors. I used to, well, because I could. That meant I had about 50, 60, 80 guys on a team because I wanted to grab anybody that might be good.
It then dawned on me how stupid and unrealistic this was. It also meant the minors was beyond having any sort of ability to be managed. It meant loads upon loads of guys just didn't get any playing time. Ultimately it was counter-productive. Now I hold a firm 40 man roster (I am not even sure what the real limits are but 40 works for me). The minor league rosters are then at least manageable. It also adds some welcome strategy that I was omitting before. One exception I do make is in the rookie league in Jun, July and August. The sudden influx of 30 draft picks or so, most of them worthless anyway makes me up size the roster to 70 in June, 60 in July, 50 in August and back to 40 for the remainder of the year. In closing, as tempting as it is to just grab them all, it takes a lot of fun out of it. |

Having too many minor leaguers is counterproductive. Keep only the best, and make sure to get them playing time. My rookie leagues have no size limits, but all of the other minor leagues have an upper roster limit of 35. Often there will be fewer players than that on a given team.

Right before the season starts, I offer minor league deals to anybody left in the pool that played for my big league team in the past (that I actually liked) and anybody from my team's immediate area. I figure I'm doing my part to help out some local guys and give former players one more shot with a team they were on in the past... Although I try to maintain a roster minimum of 24/25 and a maximum of 30 for all but the rookie league.
In my own OOTP games, I keep the roster limit at 35 for the rookie league. In online leagues without roster limits, I periodically cull the herd by releasing any guys still hanging around in the rookie leagues that are 24 and older. |
