Career ending injuries - promising careers cut short
Got any "what could have been" stories of players in your baseball universes?
This is Bruce Sackett. The Twins drafted him 7th overall in 1996 out of Deer Valley high school in Glendale, Arizona. 4 full seasons in the Majors in which he was an all-star twice, Rookie of the Year, and a Glove Glove winner at SS. Looks to be potentially be headed towards a Hall of Fame career...and bam, just like that..a torn labrum ends his career at just 26. Would have loved to see what he could have done over a 15 year career in the Majors. |

This one hurt. He may not have been a pending HoF but his playoff performances were outstanding. In the 2052 WS he went 9 innings plus one batter in the 10th in a 7th game loss. The next year he had 15K and the win in the WS decider. Unfortunately he got injured after 3 starts in 2054 and never made it back. See this thread.

Not quite the same early success as your guy, but Blair Stewart was tracking to have an impressive career.
1st pick in the 2028 draft, Stewart went straight from college into the majors. In 2030, he stole 61 bases, still a season record, and in the first half of 2031 he was hitting over .300, had made the All Star team (for the 2nd straight year) and was looking to have a real breakout season. Then he tore his labrum and suddenly, having only just turned 24, his career was over. At the time, scouting reports suggested he still had some way to go to reach his full potential.

Manny would have been one of the best closers of all-time.

Strasburg went down for the count late in 2015. I think it was his MCL or something. Really hurt the Nationals, who had signed him long-term. It's now 2021, and I decided to edit his stats down and un-retire him. Waiting to see if anyone picks him up; it'd be a pretty feel-good story if he could at least contribute somewhere.

Considering he was only 30 and rivaled Ty Cobb & Shoeless Joe Jackson for the best player in the ABF, Rogers Hornsby suffering from post concussion syndrome at age 30 qualifies in my book. Several Triple Crowns, several MVP's. Age 30 and 516 HR which ranked 2nd when he retired, he is now 3rd behind Jackson and Josh Gibson. .397 Avg ranks 3rd behind Cobb & Jackson.

Is that fictional or historical-fictional MLB? Because he is not a real Boston player in 2000.
Speaking of fictional, Yan would be a great closer too (and MLB potential): ![]() Say it ain t so, Joe! Career ended by an inflamed shoulder?

'Iggy' Bond was a super player when he was injured. He was the had the highest BA in history but didn't qualify because he didn't have enough PA. In 2015 he "un-retired" and at the age of 43 had one last solid season to put himself into the record books.
I was a big fan of Bond, even though his Panthers continued to scorch me while he was there. I'm glad he was able to come back at 43 with no editing, other than the "un-retire", and deliver a full season. He is now officially the league's BA champ.

Damn..in a very similar case, KC just lost Ricardo Torres to a career ending labrum injury. 4 time all-star and only 24..
