Free Agency for non financial leagues???

Maybe there is a way to already do this or maybe I'm the only one that would be interested. Anyway, I would like to see something like FA even though I have financial turned off (I play historic). After 8-10 years service time or whatever setting the commissioner sets, player is released from current team and placed back in with the rookie draft (or Special FA draft). I suppose you could set up options like losing team can claim them but would lose their 1st or 2nd round pick.

The problem is, how do clubs compete for these free agents if there is no financial aspect? What would entice a free agent to sign with one club as opposed to another i the absence of a monetary incentive? On what basis would AI-run clubs compete with the human user for the available free agents?

The only way I could see having free agents would be if there was some sort of a special free agent draft, set up similarly to how the amateur draft works.
