Dec 31st or Jan 1st - Which day is best to import from?

The title says it all. Which day would be better for an import from OOTP15 to OOTP16?

Thanks for the reply. Sorry, I guess I didn't make myself clear.I have left off at December 31st on my last OOTP15 season. Does it matter if I move ahead to January 1st with OOTP15, or would it be better to wait until I import into OOTP16?

I don't think it'll matter much.

In the specific case of Dec31-Jan 1 I'd choose Jan 1. There is a lot of stuff going on in that transition so it might be better to let v15 do it.

Both days are fine. I agree with RchW. I have converted at all points of a season and had no OOTP related issues. check some of your settings screens after conversion. As it is I will be converting in the offseason between World Series of 2 leagues in my ABF. Either last June or at the ASG for my EBL & In August for my Top 25 League.

I used to always get told first day of preseason when nothing is happening in the league. Never had problems, but i guess offseason in general is good to do it.

Has anyone started at the beginning of Spring Training? Any issues there?

Generally speaking, anytime outside of the season should be reasonable.

I would personally recommend either the beginning of the offseason, the day FAs file, or the beginning of the pre-season, as those are likely the 3 biggest "turnover" points of the year. Others (including Markus) may have differing opinions, but if I were recommending times, those would be the 3 I would aim for.

Over the years I've converted leagues at all kinds of different times, including mid season. Never had a problem myself, but that's not to say one wouldn't arise.

I will say this though - Before converting, make sure you have a couple of Backup copies of your league tucked safely away somewhere.

It can save you a lot of grief

This.

I know Markus too has stated you can import at any time for at least the last several versions. One caveat is you do this knowing some AI decisions would have been made with the "old" code and decisions after import with new code. There could be some AI roster moves due to new coding, contracts negotiated before and after import may be done differently etc. etc. So if you are a stickler and want all decisions in a season to be based on the same code wait for one of the suggested off season times. If you don't care about this any time will work fine. I've done it both ways without issue.

One good suggestion made here already is after import take a moment and check all of your league settings. I do this no matter when I import as sometimes Markus adds new options and you never know what default is until you go look. There's also the off chance one of your current settings will change I suppose so, better safe than sorry.

I backup my league before I import though it really isn't necessary. The act of importing doesn't do anything to your old league other than read files to do the import. You can always go back and re-import the league if you feel the need. But as above "better safe than sorry".

After import I backup the new imported league before I do anything in it. Again a safety net in case any little bugs are found or a setting ends up being something I didn't want.

All things being equal I agree with Matt and several others here that sometime during off season or pre season is best if for nothing else the continuity of having all decisions made for a season to be made with the same set of rules\evaluations. If I simmed my games and could finish in an afternoon fine but i don't, I play out all of my games so if I'm anywhere in my current season, other than maybe September, I'm not leaving v16 on the shelf until I finish. Oh no, when OOTP 16 shows up it goes into use immediately

I have seen the old file get corrupted during import, thus my suggestion for backups. However if you feel safe enough, by all means........

Backups are great and if you have access to a large backup HD or large cloud space, upload it to as many places if you are in love with your league/world.

Just as an example, you've seen the files in say v14 corrupted while importing into v15? I've always been able to go back to the last version and load my old game without incident, all mods still in place and everything as I left it. Still able to play it if I so choose.

But yeah, as I said I still do backup because better safe than sorry.

January 1st if you're saving your league as a template to continue its history in the new game.
