Worst Cy Young Winner ever?
Never seen the likes of this before...in my random debut league starting in 1901 (now up to 1914) David Cone won the Cy Young with a line of 17-20, 2.39 ERA, 262 Ks and an 8.2 WAR. Runner-up Lefty Grove was 22-14, 2.47 ERA, 302 Ks and an 8.4 WAR. Anybody else ever have a 20 game loser win the Cy Young?

That's a pretty darn good pitcher: not his fault that his teammates couldn't hit. Wins and losses are kind of an overrated way to look at pitchers. You could argue that Grove might have deserved the Cy Young more, and I wouldn't quarrel too much, but that's a very fine season from Cone.

Even if he was 17-20, he had a hell of a year. Not close to the worst Cy Young winner of all time.

Not really sure why Grove didn't win it. The only category Cone was better in was ERA, and that just barely. Stuff like this is why I always pick my own awards.
One question: What were the records of their respective teams? Maybe if Cone's team was much better, but I seriously doubt it, if he only went 17-20 with those numbers. Last edited by ThatSeventiesGuy; 04-18-2015 at 08:32 PM. |

Maybe reputation helped?
Hmmmm....guess I was stuck in an old way of thinking about the value of wins and the stigma attached to losing 20 games in a season. Still, don't think I've ever heard of a 20 game loser winning the Cy Young Award, though. Yes, Cone had a pretty fair season, would have to say that Grove definitely led in more of the "secondary" pitching categories as well, but Cone did place in top ten in most of them,,,except maybe shutouts (Grove led league with 7 to Cone's 3). After looking back, I see something else interesting...it was Cone's 3rd consecutive Cy Young (maybe reputation had a little something to do with it?)

More thoughts on Cone and Grove
Same season on my Red Sox team, Rube Marquard went 21-12, 2.54, 128 Ks, WAR a lowly 6.4. My Red Sox went 86-68 and won it all, while Grove's Cleveland Naps were 81-73, finishing in 3rd place, 5 games out. So, I wouldn't think team records would play a big part, would they?

This goes to my playoffs MVP post issue. I think ERA is weighted too heavily into awards. Grove had a better record, more Ks and a better WAR and should have won it over Cone
