Suggestion for a new trading style--August 12, 1987

I've been playing this game since V2. The trading was garbage (IMO) for many, many versions. It's now improved so much it is hardly recognisable (and that's good).

I choose to play very hard and heavily favour prospects as that makes it so I have to "lose" a trade to get a player. Tough is good but there is some realism missing in this method and if it could be changed a bit, I believe it would add some realism to the game and improve it.

There is no way I can get a young prospect. That isn't realistic but that's the mode I must play if I want tough trading. I want to take you back to August 12, 1987 for an example of how to improve the game.

On that date the Atlanta Braves traded a 36-year old Doyle Alexander to the Detroit Tigers for the 20-year-old prospect John Smoltz whom I'm sure you know is in the HOF. Doyle isn't. Doyle helped the Tigers win the A.L. East that year by going 9-0 during his partial season with them. From the time he donned a Tiger uniform until the end of the season, he was the BEST pitcher in baseball. He finished 4th in Cy Young voting which is quite incredible based on less than half a season with the Tigers (more like just 8 weeks). We all know what John Smoltz did.

Did the Tigers do the right thing? IMO, the answer is yes. They wanted a pitcher to help pull them over the top and they got one. You have to give quality to get quality. Did the Tigers think that John Smoltz would end up being John Smoltz? Probably not but I don't think they regret making the trade.

I think the trading module should keep the "heavily favour prospects" for teams that are going nowhere and are building for the future. If a team wants to "win now", then they should be able to strike a fair trade for an older superstar for a young prospect. You can't do that now if you want difficult trading.

I want difficult trading but I also want something simulating reality. I could not have made this "greatest trade of the 80's" in OOTP. I believe I should have a shot at something like this.

I agree that having a 'floating' setting would be optimal.

I like the idea of heavily favours prospects but when I fired up my first '16 season using the Quickstart my league had the division leading Red Sox traded their #1 starter for a couple of decent prospects just before the deadline.

Perhaps a new setting as you suggest could be tied to the Win now, Neutral or Rebuild setting? Sounds easy but it probably isn't.
