24 Man Roster?

I have my league set to evolve (I think I may not allow it to expand yet) and I was just informed that the active roster is now 24.

Has anyone dealt with this yet? I know it's just one player, but any strategies to consider?

Make sure you have several guys in your pen that could go 2-3 innings if need-be.

Or just go change it back to 25.

I was gonna say, "Yeah, turn evolution off" but Rch beat me to it.

And because I don't wanna snark without helping, I'd probably look for backups who can play infield and outfield (if playing modern era) or just going with one less pitcher (playing 1980 or earlier). I like to have versatile backups anyway, because I only play NL-style baseball, regardless of era, and they help with double-switches.

In games I play pre-1980, I almost always have one pitcher who gets NO work, so for me, that's who I'd drop. My starters in those games are always going 7-8 unless blown out anyway.

MLB teams went with 24-man rosters as recently as the late 1980s:

"Major League teams decided to play with 24-man rosters during the first half of the 1978 season (i.e. until July 1) and during the entire season - except for the period of expanded rosters - from 1986 to 1989, as a cost-cutting measure in the face of escalating player salaries. The settlement of the 1990 strike made the 25-man roster a part of the basic collective bargaining agreement and it has not been touched since."
-- From Roster - BR Bullpen

I can't see that working to well in today's game, with 1-inning relievers all the rage.

I play my 25-man teams like they're 24-man thanks to a six man rotation, and also occasionally run 24-man rosters outright. So you can say I have a lot of experience

My big tip is to rely on pitching and defense with smaller rosters. The worst thing that can happen to you is a tired bullpen.

If faced with a 24-man roster in the contemporary era, I would cut my pitching staff to 11, set all relievers to "middle relief", slightly slow the swiftness with which they're yanked, and place greater importance than before on stamina. And I'd beg OOTP to make a "stopper" role available in all eras.

Going with only 12 position players strikes me as too great a gamble. A couple of injuries, and you're putting your backup catcher in the outfield.

If you adjust the closer role to rarely the stopper role becomes available in historical leagues so I'd guess it does in frictional leagues as well.

We do it because we're socially awkward nerds. It's a little bit ok to "snark" as long as you help too.

But, you're right. We should probably be a little less sarcastic.

My league went with the 24 man roster in 2020, after the AL abolished the DH in 2017, so that made it easier. The computer run teams kept the 12 man pitching staff, so I went with it. I have to say that I don't miss that 13th guy on the bench. There's no platooning, you have to go with your 8 starters, a backup infielder, backup outfielder, backup catcher who can also play 1b, and utility IF/OF guy.

The real trick, now it's 2049, and they've trimmed the roster again to 23.

BAH!
It makes things more interesting in a 162 game season with 24 man rosters. In my old ABF league League evo changed it to 23 active 38 40 man. Made extra inning games really hard when you have 4 arms in the pen not counting the closer and you have 1 less IF or OF. No DH.
