Arbitration - Offering less than their previous salary
I've never tried or thought of this until now...
I have a player who made $12.5M this year. He really underperformed this season and the initial arbitration offer is $13M. It allows me to offer anything I want to the arbitrator. Do they ever rule in favor of the team if the the offer is less than the previous years? His talent/value should be closer to $6-$8M than $13. Thanks in advance. |

No. What i would do is nontender him and try to resign him once he hits the FA market

Interesting primer on arb here.
http://www.thecubreporter.com/book/export/html/3515 You might, stress on might, get away with a $11.5-$12M offer but not $6-$8M ever. If his value as you see it is so low then don't tender a contract and see what the market says. He will be signable as a FA. I non-tender a lot of players and/or get contracts done prior to arb. This group of features seems well implemented in recent versions.
