Tapping in to YOUR GM strategy

Ok, I had a team in mind to take over as GM. But I wanted to know your opinions or thoughts on something. Here's the scenario.....

You decide to take over an established MLB team as GM. What's the very first thing you look at / analyze? Your pitching staff? Stats of the team? The entire roster? Your coaches and who needs to stay or go?

What's your number one priority to start with?

Pitching staff. Rickey Branch, Connie Mack and others are right. Pitching is 75% of the game. You really just need pitching and some kind of offense.

Coaches and other personnel. If you don't hire the good ones on the first day, they will be gone.

I look at the overall 'health' of the organization and then decide whether to begin a rebuild or tweek....the performance and contracts of the 40 man is obviously the predominant focus.

A begrudging congrats to your Royals by the way!!!!

Pitching and Organizational depth. Look at the larger contracts already on the books, are you able to move them? What can you get in return? Is your team set for this year only, what is the 5 year outlook?

I take a look at current team assets and try to envision the team in 2-4 years if I stand entirely pat. I also check the budget and see if I need to clear payroll.
