In an open-ended game, I think I lost

I started unemployed and took a job in France. Two seasons played out OK. Then, in the third season, I decided to carry only two goalies. One got injured, and I have a game to play. The game won't let me play because I don't have two goalies, and I can't sign one because nobody ever signs on the day they were offered one.
And if you're thinking "call up someone from your farm club", I can't do that. They do have youth clubs, but those players don't count as being yours. You have to sign them as free agents. Which brings me to the above problem.
I don't want to cheat and use commissioner mode (I have a problem with that in OOTP16 anyway). So... is restarting the only option?

You can set any player's position to goalie at any time (right click on the player) ;-)

you can also enable commish mode, manually add a goalie to your team, and then disable commish mode.
