Historic Surprises???

For all who play Historic Sims I have a question.

Have you ever had a player excel in your sim, were as in real life they were less then eye popping? Or.... Have you had the opposite? Players being total busts, that had decent careers in real life?

I once did a sim where Babe Ruth injured his arm throwing a fastball in a 1916 playoff game. He missed all of 1917, actually had a decent 1918 (won about 17, 18 games, era ~2.80) but quickly fell off due to repeated injuries to that same arm. He retired in 1922 with about 60 career victories and 9 career home runs.

That time Ted Wingfield turned into the most dominant pitcher in baseball and almost single-handedly helped me win 7 WS in a 10-year span...

Mike Schmidt comes to mind. Rarely did well for me over the multiple season replays I've done with the Phillies: BA around .230, maybe 25 HRs. I really should not be batting him 3rd or 4th with those kind of stats. But... he's Mike Schmidt!

On the other hand, in a historical draft league, Ken Griffey Jr hit .400, yet lost out on the MVP to teammate Frank Thomas who hit 60 HRs with 200 RBIs. They both played for Colorado. So, it depends on the environment.

I tend to use the Sprtize DB. Yam Yaryan or whatever his name is played for the White Sox and hit 41 HR in the minors in 1920. When i do straight historical or RD he tends to lead the league with around 46 HR. cy Young almost always sucks compared to RL. Yes 350 Wins is impressive but it's not 511. Also In my main league Hee Sop Choi & Brandon McCarthy are borderline HOFers.

Ken Griffey Sr. was a slightly better player than Ken Griffey Jr. in my game and it was more a case of Jr. being much worse than IRL and Griffey Sr. being better. I don't see either of them getting into the HoF, but Sr. is closer than Jr..
