Prospects Randomly Retiring

I dont know if anyone has seen this but I had White Sox top prospect randomly become a FA and retire in September in my league. Has anyone else seen things like this?

I've seen a news story where one retired to join the military. Was it something like that?

Basically I remember it because it caused me to think of that NFL football player who did the same and was killed.
