Time to Trade Him or Demote Him
I have a player at cf who's current contact and power ratings have been increasing for nearly the two full seasons I've had him at the ML level. Trouble is, he never comes close to his contact rating of 50 or power rating of 58 (hundred point scale) statistically. He's a consistent .220 hitter with about 10 HRs a year.
I don't know whether to trade him or demote him. His current ratings are 50 contact and 58 power. In my league, that usually means he should be a .250 hitter with about 25 homers a year. His potential ratings have never changed and now his current ratings come close to them. Not much ceiling left. Oh, the scout says he has a 'me first attitude'. Demote him or trade him? Trade him, and then watch his career take off...

Always look to improve your team and keep shoping any player. Don't be afraid to make some trades and even blockbuster trades.

scout could be overrating the guy. maybe he is truly a 40 or 45 contact and power but the scout is missing the truth

i think there are several factors to judge before deciding what to do with him. some factors i would consider are his age, options left, his salary, team salary restraints, his production in aaa, what type of value this kid has to other teams, ur scouts opinion on his talent, osa opinion on his talent, and what do you think of his talent, and ur teams record... if u think this kid has a future on ur team i would keep him around. personally, if i liked him, i would keep him on my 25 man. perhaps platoon him to get him in the lineup in better situations that could allow him to flourish.

if his splits are terrible, i'd look into trading while scouts see him in a positive way. i don't like one-dimensional players, especially if right-handed.
if you think his ratings are legit, keep the faith. he will regress to the mean if given enough time. hopefully he's a 7-8-9 batter in the meantime. |

Yeah, I agree with the consensus here. I think my scout has him overrated. I just shopped him and got nothing but garbage offers from all the teams that expressed any interest. Looks like he's not worth much so I'm thinking I'll demote him first and see if he gets the message. If it turns out he doesn't start producing in a month I'll trade hm for a bag of chips if that's the best I can get. I guess you win some, you lose some.

the bits of programming won't know they are being punished, so don't demote for that reason or hold off a month if the answer is already clear.
1 extra month is only necessary if the sample is a tad small or if you can somehow create extra value by waiting. maybe the time of the year can help with value, then again maybe not. i've never tried to look into this stuff. |

What are the rest of his ratings? If it's a 50 contact with a 30 avoid K, I wouldn't be surprised by a 220 BA. Also could be a platoon bat with splits favouring LHP and he shouldn't start vs RHP.

If no one will give you a decent trade, then demote and see if he further develops, at least into good trade bait.

Thanks for all the replies guys. I'm thinking of another month to increase the sample size and then trade him if he's still not producing. Everybody had good ideas.
