Creating a new fictional league of true fictional teams...
While staring at the screen recently trying to think of an interesting theme from which to build a new fictional league, the OOTP default "Fictional Baseball League" made me think of all the fictional teams in various movies, TV series, and novels. I wondered if there were enough of those teams to fill an OOTP league, and I wondered if there were enough player details to help create an interest in the lineups as much as the team names.
Good News - Bad News It seems at first blush that there should be plenty of fictional baseball teams available for such a project, but alas, that is only a perception. True, if all your looking for is a team name from a book, movie, or TV series, there's plenty of them out there to choose from. However, if your looking for something that also includes enough player detail or a background story to put together a roster, then things get tricky. Why? First, we have to filter out all the kids, all the females, and all the "real life" players set into an alternate universe. PS: I'm not being "gender biased" about women, but I just can't put the Rockford Peaches against the New York Knights no matter how much I like the movie. Second, we have to at least TRY to have something more than a team name, and I didn't want to use the Flintstones, South Park, or The Simpsons. After spending hours (Ok, days) investigating, I compiled a list that is not far enough along to start a league - but complete enough to go public with it and see what possibilities I've missed. I haven't read "every" book or saw "every" movie or watched "every" TV show that involved fictional baseball - but between ALL of us, we should come pretty close to including anything that's a possibility. Here's my list so far.... 3 Teams inducted for sure, another 9 possibilities without player data. PS: At this point hoping for 16 teams but suspect I'll have to settle on 12 or less. New York Knights (1939) Movie: The Natural Owner: Judge Goodwill Baneer Manager: Pop Fisher RF: Roy Hobbs (with a "Fragile" rating, see NOTE) CF/RF: Bump Bailey (yes, he doesn't run into a wall and kill himself - but he is a pain-in-the-ass) Bat boy: Robert Lewis "Bobby" Savoy NOTE: Since Hobbs' statistics will be legendary, we'll use his questionable health to limit his playing time to about 115 games (out of 154). Cleveland Indians (1989) Movie: Major League Owner: Rachel Phelps Manager: Lou Brown Announcer: Harry Doyle 00 - Willie Mays Hayes, CF 2 - Mitchell Friedman, C 7 - Jake Taylor, C 8 - Duke Temple, Coach 10 - Eddie Harris, SP 12 - Mario Crespi, 2B 13 - Pedro Cerrano, RF 14 - Lee Van Dyke, LF 15 - Toby Reyna, SS 16 - Pepper Leach, Coach 20 - Donnie Larson, 2B 21 - Matt Kuntz, 3B 23 - Charles Graham, 1B 24 - Roger Dorn, 3B 26 - Seth Lindberg, RP 27 - Brian Campi, CF 28 - Troy Pearson, RP 30 - A.J. Metcalf, 1B 33 - Matthew Bushnell, SP 34 - Lou Brown, Manager 37 - Blake Stocker, RP 38 - Dale Tomlinson, LF 40 - Jeremy Keltner, SP 41 - Sammy Rhoads, CP 44 - Nathan Mosser, SP 45 - Chris Schindler, RP 48 - Sammy Huffman SS 99 - Ricky "Wild Thing" Vaughn, SP Durham Bulls (1988) Movie: Bull Durham Manager: Joe "Skip" Riggins C: "Crash" Davis P: Ebby Calvin "Nuke" LaLoosh Coach: Larry Hockett Jimmy (need last name and position) Deke (need last name and position) Max Patkin (Clown?) Samuel Veraldi as second baseman (might use actor's name) Jack the Umpire Mickey (need last name and position) Bobby (traded before season starts to minors) Empire Bay Cannons (2010) Game: Mafia II ... NOTE: Kingston Stadium, center fielder Jeremy Sunstrum These teams we know nothing about other than their names... Miami Gators (1987) Movie: Back to the Future II Santa Barbara Seabirds (0000) TV Series: Psych ...actually has a 1B/C named Cal Eason San Francisco Saints (0000) TV Series: Monk Lost Heaven Lancers (2010) Game: Mafia II Los Santos Saints (0000) Grand Theft Auto San Fierro Packers (0000) Grand Theft Auto Metropolis Meteors (0000) DC Comics Gotham Knights (0000) DC Comics Coast City Angels (0000) DC Comics Any comments would be appreciated. There's also the Hoboken Zephyrs from the original Twilight Zone. The only names are a manager named McGarry and a robot pitcher named Casey.

That was my first thought. Apparently it was filmed at the LA Wrigley field.

Thanks, love Twilight Zone. 2nd all-time to M*A*S*H* in my opinion. I think they also used LA Wrigley for the old Home Run Derby show. They used to rerun that on basic cable when I was a kid. Still love it.

Since you are using Cleveland Indians from Major League, how about the Detroit Tigers and New York Yankees from For The Love of the Game?
You'd have to watch and look them up but there are several different players featured in that movie. |

I've decided on the first six teams
I'm definitely going to construct a 12 team, 2 league structure, even though there really aren't 12 fictional teams "with" players available. I can put a few key players on these teams, like Jack Elliott from Mr. Baseball to give the team some character.
I've picked the teams for what I am calling the Atlantic League below, including details I've set so far. If I've missed something or you have comments, I'd be happy to hear them. Next I'll tackle the Pacific League. These 6 teams will be more sparse with book and movie characters - and I may use the California Pioneers (from the Hardball TV Series) to stock it with the Pioneers players from the Universal Baseball Association, by Robert Coover. Without further ado.... Atlantic League New York Knights, Book/Movie: The Natural War Memorial Field Owner: Judge Goodwill Baneer Manager: Pop Fisher #9-RF: Roy Hobbs (with a "Fragile" rating, since Hobbs' statistics will be legendary, we'll use his questionable health to limit his playing time to about 115 games (out of 154). #??-CF/RF: Bump Bailey ( he doesn't run into a wall and kill himself - but he is a pain-in-the-ass personality) Rest of roster (23) will be OOTP fictional players. Cleveland Indians, Movie: Major League Cuyahoga County Stadium (Milwaukee County Stadium from movie) Owner: Rachel Phelps Manager: Lou Brown (#34) Announcer: Harry Doyle #8 - Duke Temple, Coach #16 - Pepper Leach, Coach Full 25 man roster…
Durham Bulls, Movie: Bull Durham Durham Athletic Park Manager: Joe “Skip” Riggins Coach: Larry Hockett C: "Crash" Davis P: Ebby Calvin "Nuke" LaLoosh ??: Jimmy (position and last name provided by OOTP) ??: Deke (position and last name provided by OOTP) ??: Samuel Veraldi as second baseman ( name provided by OOTP) ??: Mickey (position and last name provided by OOTP) Rest of roster (19) will be OOTP fictional players. Empire Bay Cannons, Game: Mafia II Kingston Stadium CF: Jeremy Sunstrum 1B: Jack Elliott (from Movie: Mr. Baseball) Rest of roster (23) will be OOTP fictional players. Miami Gators, Movie: Back to the Future II (stadium not yet chosen) 2B: Tony Micelli (from TV show: Who’s the Boss) 1B: Clu Haywood (Yankee player from Movie: Major League II) Rest of roster (23) will be OOTP fictional players. Detroit Tigers, Movie: For Love of the Game Briggs Field Owner: Gary Wheeler Manager: Frank Perry Announcer: Bob Sheppard P: Billy Chapel C: Gus Sinski ??: Fitch (position and last name provided by OOTP) Rest of roster (22) will be OOTP fictional players.

Pacific League
This western league proved to be more difficult than the Atlantic League. Far fewer fictional teams WITH players were available from novels, movies, or TV shows than on the east coast. This restriction did, however, make me think out-of-the box to get the 6 teams I needed. St. Louis Wolves, Abbott & Costello Comedy Skit (stadium not yet chosen) Manager: William “Bud” Abbot I thought it might be fun to get A&C’s ballplayers into the game… 1B: William H. Oslo (Billy Oslo) 2B: Willie H.A. Towson (Willie Towson) 3B: Ike “DONuT” KNOWell (Ike Knowell) LF: Walter H. Yokum (Walt Yokum) CF: BEnny C. AUSEtt (Benny Ausett) RF: NOrman B. ODY (Norman Ody) P: TOMmy O. spaRROW (Tommy Sparrow) C: Timothy Oscar DAYson (Tim Dayson) SS: I.D.G.A. DARNett (Ivan Darnett) Rest of roster (16) will be OOTP fictional players. Seattle Pilots, One Year Wonders Sick’s Stadium Although the Pilots were a real team, I thought their appearance in the real world for only one year might qualify them as a fictional team. Roster (25) will be OOTP fictional players. California Pioneers, TV Series: Hardball & Book: Universal Baseball Association, Inc. Pioneer Park Mgr: Barney Bancroft This team will be a hybrid since I’m adding the Pioneer players from The Universal Baseball Association by Robert Coover to the players(2) from the Hardball TV series. Dave Logan (veteran pitcher from Hardball) C Mike Widmer 2B Toby Ramsey (Rookie) LF Grammercy Locke 3B Hatrack Hines (Star) CF Witness York (Star) RF Stan Patterson (Star) C Royce Ingram (Star) SS Lance Wilder 1B Goodman James P Damon Rutherford (Rookie) PH Axel Rawlings PR Bryan Hillyer PH Wilson Tuck P Mickey Halifax P Drew McDermott PH Rusty Palmers P Thornton Shadwell Rest of roster (7) will be OOTP fictional players. Santa Barbara Seabirds, TV Series: Monk Nat Bailey Stadium Thin on players... 1B/C Cal Eason RP Sam Malone (from TV Series: Cheers) Rest of roster (23) will be OOTP fictional players. San Fiero Packers, Game: Grand Theft Auto Corvin Stadium No specific players from Packers... T-Rex Pennebaker (from Movie: Mr. 3000) Jimmy “The Flame” Flanagan (from Movie: Trouble with the Curve) Rest of roster (23) will be OOTP fictional players. Los Santos Saints, Game: Grand Theft Auto Los Santos Forum MGR: Jimmy Dugan (from Movie: A League of their Own) No specific players from Saints... C Jack Parkman (from Major League II – White Sox) P Steve Nebraska (from the Movie: The Scout) Rest of roster (23) will be OOTP fictional players.

Santa Barbara Seabirds, TV Series: Psych
It will take a while to assemble the 12 teams, but I'll post them as I go...
* Eason is a character directly from the TV show "Psych" and the Seabirds * Malone is a player I wanted to include actually from the TV show "Cheers" but didn't have a Boston team, so I'm adding him to the Seabirds All other players (23) are generated by OOTP.

San Fiero Packers, Game: Grand Theft Auto
The Packers were mentioned in the GTA game, but not any players. I'm adding 2 players from other movies, and 23 generated players from OOTP.
T-Rex Pennebaker is from the movie: Mr. 3000 Flanagan is form the movie: Trouble with the Curve

There's also the Chunichi Dragons, with their imported American stars Jack Elliot (Tom Selleck) and Max 'Hammer' Dubois (Dennis Haysbert), managed by Uchiyama (Ken Takakura). Check the IMDB cast for other player names:

St. Louis Wolves, Abbot & Costello comedy skit
I decided to have a little fun with this team. It seemed only fair that Who, What, I Don't Know, and their team mates should get a chance to really play. I took the skit player names and modified them into names I could actually use, as follows...
1B: William H. Oslo (Billy Oslo) 2B: Willie H.A. Towson (Willie Towson) 3B: Ike “DONuT” KNOWell (Ike Knowell) LF: Walter H. Yokum (Walt Yokum) CF: BEnny C. AUSEtt (Benny Ausett) RF: NOrman B. ODY (Norman Ody) P: TOMmy O. spaRROW (Tommy Sparrow) C: Timothy Oscar DAYson (Tim Dayson) SS: I.D.G.A. DARNett (Ivan Darnett) And, of course we have Bud Abbott as Manager and Lou Costello as hitting coach
