Playoff Player Development
Player development is about playing time, so how much does playoff playing time matter for young/minor league players?
MLB club out of playoffs do you send stud young player who has used option for the season down to AAA to get more at bats? Low minors when you need as much time to see who develops... does everyone or almost everyone make the playoffs so that there are more at bats/batters faced? |

Development is simply about time. other factors influence however random they made it. each player flips their own coin with their own traits applied, if relevant.
it's a constant force (yet not consistent), then things affect how its applied even further. mostly it just matters they are on an active roster. and age, of course... 24-25-26+ starts gettingn less and less likely to improve toward potential. pretty sure intelligence is the strongest personality rating tied to that. in life playing games doesn't make you better in sports (small effect compared to the whole, experince does help to a point). technique and coordination are improved through practice. plenty of mental preperation too - like watching video = studying, et al. most of it is off-field or practice field stuff. i know if i want to get better at golf, i need to work on my short game to consistently stay a single-digit handicap.... but, it's more fun just to go play 18. so, my short game fails me more than it should, because i cannot get any better at it simply by playing the game of golf. nothing in my golf game can improve beyond what it is by playing the game anymore. but, i am definitely not as good as i could possibly be.. it's not my job to do so. i'd like to think that performing well helps them... but, i'm not so sure anymore, or at least it is a minimum effect or indirectly by affecting personality. mlb, assumes they are playing in minors: i have seemingly just as many develop playing 20-30games off the bench as i do when i dump a average-above average rated palyer into the bottom of my lineup. i've seen pitchers with ~5-6 era explode development-wise (huge, quick increases over 1 season in MLB). anecdotal crap is a meaningless argument, i dont have hard numbers, but it's frequent enough that its clearly more random than specific to this or that result for sure. i still favor playing them, if they are on my MLB roster -- even if it's ~70/30 inconsequential in my mind. i do this (mlb-ready but underdeveloped players seldomly playing) very often with catchers, but seldomly have other batters on the bench with good ratings or potential -> they'd be traded before 1 full year in majors for sure... they wouldn't have gotten so far without being traded, lol. but, many of my catchers play 20-30 games for 2-3 years and they hit their potential at a rate i'd expect. even the 80pot type guys develop as normal as a backup catcher in my experience... i've never done this for more than 2-3 years though. and they are typically still 21-24ish - when nearing prime a decision must be made. highly rated players won't lack playing time except in odd situations. it happens in real life too, on occasion. the game can handle it without them atrophying bench players develop and maintain... same process applies to them. they seem to develop at the same rate, too. obviously they are more likely to be ~fully developed when they hit the majors, but in MiL as well, they seem to develop regardless. Excellent post. If all it took was playing time then we would all create 300 game minor league seasons.

My understanding of development is this: A non fully developed player at the ML level needs PT, so it is not a good Idea to pull your 70% developed best prospect out of the minors at 22yr old to play 5th OF/defensive replacement on the Big League Club, if they move to the ML club and are not fully developed they need to play as much as possible.
PT only matters at the ML level, Minor leagues and reserve roster players will develop (Although it my understanding that PT in the minors can expedite the process, but it will not change the potential increase (or decrease for that matter) and that feasibly a player could run out of development time before he has reached his potential. So PT in the minors is a good Idea. this is my understanding of how it works in OOTP, If anyone knows this to be wrong in OOTP18 please chime in
