Depth Chart Management (Starters as backups)

I'm trying to figure out how to set up my depth chart to handle a couple of specific situations where a starter at one position is the primary backup at a second position.

1) My 4th outfielder is by the far the best defensive CF. What I want to happen is when a corner OF needs a day off, the regular CF slides over to the corner and the 4th OF plays in CF. I tried setting up my depth chart with the regular CF as the backup RF/LF, and the 4th OF as the backup CF. However, after simming, I noticed that during the games when the LF or RF was on the bench, it was the 4th OF who played in the corner.

2) My everyday DH is also my backup 1B. When I simmed for a week and my 1B missed a few games with a DtD injury, instead of starting the DH at 1B, my back up catcher (with no 1B ability) played there, and the everyday DH stayed at DH.

It seems like the AI won't use a player in a backup position if they already have a primary spot in the lineup. Any suggestions on how to set things up to get the behavior I want?

Starer can't be slotted in as backups. 7-day lineups is the only answer I know

Do you have 'Auto-Sync Depth Charts & Lineups' on? If that setting is unchecked you can place starters in backup positions I believe

That box is unchecked. I can place starters as backups in my depth chart just fine. But the AI doesn't appear to use them.

The appearance of being able to put starters into backup positions is an illusion. The game ignores them.
