Coaches

What exactly am I supposed to look at when hiring coaches?

Scouts and Trainers have ratings for their jobs, but coaches only have tendencies, right?

Basically I just try to match up their tendencies with what I have more of, like if I have more ground ball pitchers get a coach who has that for a tendency.

Is there a better way to go about it?

Nothing wrong with that approach- especially for the major leagues. For minor league coaches I usually look for coaches who focus on areas I want my young players to be better at: groundball pitching and patient hitting. I also tend to try to sign the coach with the highest reputation- this could be misguided though.

Also remember that there are a couple of views on the personnel screen that can give you information: Tendencies and Value Ratings. Tendencies is better for evaluating HC and PC, while Value Ratings is better for Managers and Bench Coach

you don't see anything important outsideof the game strategies. you should definitely not count on reputation to have a strong correlation to anything but random things, lol.

unless you want to cheat and look at the coach ratings in the editor, you really have zero information to go on realtive to coachign ability.

game strategies are just as important and possibly significantly more important. they may have marginalized the coach ratings when they made them invisible during normal gameplay.

i may have to do this... take 2 managers and put on decent teams... keep the teams decent-ish... have one with extremely stupid strategies that are mathematically BAD decisions and give that guy 200/200 coach ratings. then obviously give another coach good strategies and 1/200 ratings.

i bet it has more to do with keeping a job long-term and possibly development than being good at managing a team -- relationships and such, but obviously not influencing strategies, since those are their own settings.

it just makes no sense to hide the info, if it's integral to any portion of the game. i'd like to think they are rational and that's actually why you don't see them anymore... because they are deprecated bits of info... but no self-respecting coder would leave useless code behind, lol. that's worse than repeating yourself (programming not verbal).
